I'm still looking, and my trip is coming up very soon. Any suggestions from those who have visited before? Also, I'm concerned about traveling around by myself. Are there certain areas I should maybe avoid getting a room in being a single woman alone?

I thought you were living in Paris.

Anyway.

We just did the vacation apartment rental thing, which is cheaper. Our studio apartment was down an alley right behind the Moulin Rouge, which I had not realized was as, um, active a neighborhood as it is. There were no real problems. The fellow who slept in the doorway did not wake up all day, and the kids heeded my advice to avoid the puddles between the cobblestones. Also, the nearest Metro route down to Notre Dame went through some realistic neighborhoods. All in all, if I were a single woman, I might look elsewhere.

Price is right, location is incredible. In addition: Recently remodeled, cute, small place, clean and comfortable, and no worries about being alone (at least when we were there in 2005).

I'm living in France, but far from Paris. I wasn't sure I could book an apartment since I won't be there a full week, just 5 nights. How did you find your rental?

Yeah, apartment rentals are the way to go, even for 5 nights. Pfft, you could rent it for a week, and still save money over a hotel.

Speaking of which, my only recommendation is L'Hotel, a fantastic boutique lodging in the Latin quarter, a block from the Seine, right across from the Louvre. Fantastic location, amazing ambience, and yes - high prices. Oscar Wilde died there!

My suggestion likely won't do you any good, but ... if i can afford it ... this is where i stay when i'm in Paree.

If you do a Yahoo search of +paris +vacation +apartment +rentals, you'll come up with lots of sites. The two I found most useful in my various queries were AhParis and cyberrentals.com. Both seemed easier to use with searches by neighborhoods. The AhParis listings claim three night minimums. The Cyberrentals site is useful because even if someone says one week minimum, you can see a calendar of availability that might show a smaller block.

It may be since you're a single that the budget hotel/restroom down the hall thing will be cheaper than an apartment.

We stayed at the Hotel Regyn in Montmartre (http://hotels.parishotels.com/hotel-direct.php?hotel=66&lang=en) which is right next to the Abbesses Metro station. It is cute, comfortable, safe and charming and not expensive. We would stay there again in a second.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

I ended up finding a great internet deal on a single-occupancy room at the Hotel des Saints Pères (http://www.paris-hotel-saints-peres.com/fr/accueil/) in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés. I'm very excited!

I have also reserved a ticket for the Grandes Eaux Nocturnes (http://www.chateauversailles-spectacles.fr/en/accueil.htm) show at Versailles.

Did anyone get a Museum Pass while they were in Paris? I'm thinking I might get the two day one. I just need to make sure I plan right so I don't try to go to museums that are closed!

How about the Paris Hilton? I hear just about anyone can get in there.

Museum Pass is a must. But, yeah, must also check the closing dates so it's not useless for the one you want to visit. (The Orsay and that little place called the Louvre are my personal faves)

Make sure to stop by the Opera Garnier. (eg: "The Paris Opera House" from Phantom) Its opulence rivals Versailles itself!

Actually, that's where I'll be staying when I go in Sept. It's the Hilton Arc de Triomphe (http://www.hilton.co.uk/arcdetriomphe)
