Food that mimics other food is heinous.

My family and I went vegan (except for milk but no other milk products) for six weeks. Some of you may remember that experiment. I bought a red leather chair during that time. Foodwise, the six weeks went really fast.

I actually like food that mimics other food. And I also like the more normal versions of that concept, like Morningstar Farms and Quorn. I have some of both in my freezer right now. Quorn isn't perfect but I really enjoy putting three Quorn nuggets in a low-carb tortilla with a little Heinz 57 and some Laughing Cow mini cheeses. When eaten with a side of veggies, it's the perfect little dinner... about 225 calories.

I like the Morningstar Farms stuff myself. Mostly the veggie sausage patties and chicken nuggets.

Good stuff for a meat-esque product.

Mmm, Morningstar. Another favorite mini-dinner... 1 serving of egg beaters, scrambled. 1 slice fat-free Kraft Singles. 1 Morningstar sausage patty, dry-fried. 1 low-cal english muffin. ~250 calories.

I have a package of Morningstar corn dogs in my freezer.

I don't think Quorn tastes bad, I just don't care for the texture. And I know E will understand how to take that. ;)

Morningstar Farms corn dogs are actually good enough to meet my own demanding standards of corn-doggy goodness. I wish I had one right now!

I also really like the buffalo flavored Chick'N nuggets. Good stuff.

Quorn was pretty f'n good.

Tried the meatballs.

Since I'm not going vegetarian, so far, I see big uses for the meatballs and fewer uses for the 'chicken' since I'm not exactly looking to replace chicken. It wasn't greasy, had a meatier texture than many a meatball, and tasted like it would go well with everything from Swedish to Italian styles, and beyond.

Color me impressed.

There used to be a vegan restaurant in Downtown Oakland that had entire old-fashioned American diner menu made entirely with faux-meat products.

It is one thing to make mashed potatoes in the shape of a cupcake. Or a cake look like a hamburger. It is a different thing to try and make mashed potatoes taste like a cupcake or a cake taste like a hamburger.

While I'll eat the faux meat products I generally don't really understand the appeal. Of all the things I miss about pork and beef, the first to disappear completely for me was any craving for the texture of pork and beef. As much as I loved a good steak or pork chop back in they day I have to say that now the thought of that "meaty" feeling kind of turns me off and I'm not looking for it to be recreated with some clever manipulation of TVP.

The more processed meat things like hamburgers and hot dogs I am more ok with but even then I'm not really looking for them to recreate the the texture/flavor of beef/pork. A good veggie burger, in my opinion, tastes and feels very much like a veggie burger. And Morningstar corn dogs don't, in my opinion, much taste like real hot dogs but are still very good in that crappy food way.

Unfortunately, Quorn products are not yet available in Australia, and at this time we cannot say when and indeed if they will be introduced there, however we will forward your comments on. Quorn products are currently available in the UK, USA, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark.
