Comedian Bernie Mac died this morning in a Chicago hospital

Comedian and Chicago native Bernie Mac died early Saturday morning from complications due to pneumonia, his publicist confirmed.

Mac, 50, had been hospitalized for about a week at Northwestern Hospital, according to his spokeswoman. I was shocked to hear about his passing this morning. I always thought he was genuinely funny and I enjoyed his work.

My dad has sarcoidosis. It can be a very difficult condition to live with, and I'm surprised at all Bernie Mac was able to accomplish while dealing with that additional complication.
