Hi, all,

A few of us huddled last week and decided we'd like to go see Assassins (it's a brilliant musical) before it closes. We've already decided on a day - this Friday, September 5.

Last Thursday, this was the count:
LSPE
LSPTom
mousepod
ms. pod
iSm
Parmesan Jim

But perhaps there are others who might be interested? In the "theatergoing" thread, JW, Joe and SM expressed interest.

For tickets... o Commodore my Commodore has spoken with his contact about group rates, but I'm not sure there will be enough of us to merit that. We can buy up to 10 tickets at a time (and 10 were available when I just checked) on tix.com. They're $34 apiece. It's general admission so we'd all better arrive in a timely fashion!

And we'd probably better decide soon. Alone, I am nothing, people. And you are wind and water and sky. So let me know.

And, can I say to the recent watchers of JFK: if you're feeling entrenched in the conspiracy of assassination, this is an absurdist way to shake out of it. See it from a somewhat... different... perspective.

Let me see if I can get a hold of Chris. I have the evening free (what's that all about?)

I'm in. Hahaha, I've been involved in a project that touches on Abe's and Kennedy's assassinations. That's why it was easy to convince me to watch JFK last night.

Perfect timing on the musical. I'm in. But what's curtain time. I probably can't get to Hollywood before 6:30.

D'oh, I left that off the post! Sorry.

Curtain is at 8 PM so we should all be able to make it, I would imagine.

And I left out my project touches on the MLK assassination, too. OMG, musical theater is reading my mind!!

I was told on the phone that if we buy 10 or more the tickets would be $28.00. Saves a couple bucks for dinner. I know ChernaJoe wants to see it, so -

I talked to Chris. Sadly, we can't commit to Friday. He's in work hell again and needs to work late a few nights. Unfortunately we've got the Bowl on Wednesday and he's off work on Thursday with his Mom, so Friday may be a late day for him. We won't know until later in the week, so if we can join you, we'll have to buy tickets on the fly separately.

One of us is always in work hell.

Aww, sorry. But fortunately, if you find out you CAN join us, it's general admission so we can all sit together anyway.

FYI - since the JFK movie was mentioned - GD and I have seen a version of this at UCI a while back. Great play. Not sure I want to spend the dough at the moment, what with lots of excursions coming up...

I would like too but things are too unstable. Maybe, we'll see.

No can do, sorry. Scheduling & finances are rather bad this week. :(

They're general admission?
That was a JFK reference (or perhaps a The Critic reference) from the Commodore.

So, what's up with this? Did someone buy tickets? Are we each buying our own when we get there?

Get where, by the way? Where is the theater?

Assassins

From the theatre company that brought you award-winning productions of Sunday In The Park With George, Merrily We Roll Along and Company comes Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's bold, surreal and darkly humorous Assassins. This Tony award-winning musical is Sondheim at his twisted best -- a musical exploration of nine individuals who assassinated or attempted to assassinate the President of the United States . From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, this controversial and ultimately American musical takes us on a roller coaster ride in which one man's American dream becomes a nation's nightmare.

Actually, since we don't have a full set of 10, we can't get group tickets. So we can all buy our own online - it's general admission.

Tickets purchased for Parmesan Jim, my friend BJ and myself. Whee!

Now... where shall we dine?

Google maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=804+N+El+Centro+Ave,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90038, +USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title) shows the theater to be just above Melrose, just East of Vine. The Larchmont Grill (http://www.larchmontgrill.com/) is at Melrose and Lucerne, Larchmont Village and all its restaurants is just a bit further down.

Or, there's a Von's Pavilions at Melrose and Vine with a Starbucks and a Panda Express.

I don't so much care about where to eat as where to park.

I won't get getting there till 6:30 at the earliest. If it's general admission, what time to we have to be at the theater?

Chernabog
09-04-2008, 10:30 PM
I think we should plan on being at the theatre at 7:30.

And Larchmont Grill seems fine, and it's walking distance (2 blocks) to the theatre. What do you think, be there at 6:15?

LSPoorEeyorick
09-05-2008, 05:00 AM
I'm not sure if I can be there by 6:15 - depends on work - but I'll get there as soon as I'm able! Looking forward to it.

I know for a fact I can't be there by 6:15, and on a Friday, 6:45 is more likely for me.

Chernabog
09-05-2008, 09:17 AM
OK, so Larchmont Grill it is? I'll get there like 6:30 then, and if y'all are there afterwards, if you're really nice to me, I'll save you a seat ;)

My count is 6 people:

Am I missing anyone?

I'll give them a ring and make 6:30 rezzies, if that's ok with all.

www.larchmontgrill.com is the web site for the restaurant. It seems to have gotten good reviews on the web and whatnot.

Two more people to that count - mousepod told me he and ms. pod are still on for tonight, too.

Y'all, I'm so excited! I just listened to the original off-broadway cast recording to get pumped, and man, does that soundtrack ever get me pumped. "Unworthy of Your Love," one of the best ballads ever. And I simply can't listen to the last track on the album without getting the goosebump/shiver treatment. I love that full orchestra, with the tympani drum - but I suspect this production isn't going to have one. Ah, well, still brilliant stuff.

Aw, I'm gonna miss the Beej AGAIN :/ But have fun!

Did you guys get your tickets in advance? I don't know how limited the seating is, I'd hate for anybody to miss it if, for some reason, it sells out.

09-05-2008, 09:45 AM
I've got mine.

I don't want lousy seats, so I think showing up just half an hour before curtain is a little dicey. imo.

Chernabog
09-05-2008, 09:53 AM
OK 8 people, I'll make reservations :) And I think half hour before showtime would be fine because it is a small theatre. Cheeseman will be speaking with the artistic director of the theatre today and making sure :)

Reservations have been made in my name. For this dinner travels directly to..... the Sondheim Zone.

6:30 Reservations. Larchmont Grill for 8. I told the guy making reservations that we needed to be out of there like 7:30, so he said they could put a rush on the food (so bring extra tip money lol). So try, if you can, to be there on time :)

5750 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles 90038 is the restaurant address.

See y'all there!

LSPoorEeyorick

In the Sondheim Zone, is the three-note theme song less melodic?

We'll see you as soon as we can at Larchmont!

Just spoke with Les, the artistic director, 7:30 should be fine. Parking is tight, so park near the restaurant, and we'll walk from there.

Thanks to everybody who joined me tonight! I really enjoy sharing theater experiences with friends, and I was glad to be surrounded by you while watching one of my favorite shows.

I loved Sarah Jane and Bick... was disappointed with Booth's lack of ferociousness (ferociocity?) and the Balladeer's lack of muscular diaphragm. Interesting to see their double-casting choice (though it's definitely not my favorite) and disappointed that I still don't like "Something Just Broke." I understand why they include it, I think it's a great song, but something about it - particularly in between that brilliant "BANG! - Hail to the Chief - Everybody's Got the Right" arc - squeaks away inertia like a deflating balloon.

Still, I quite enjoyed the production. Staging was great, there were some great performances and you just can't beat the material.

There's something deeply unsettling, though, thinking about assassinations right now. Wondering what might happen to the play if ever there's another.
