Looks like Johnny is glutton for punishment? ;) I never got past 20 minutes in to Pirates 2.
Tonto??!!
Johnny Depp to star in more Disney projects, including "Pirates 4"
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Superstar actor Johnny Depp has signed on to three new Disney projects, including the fourth installment of the blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, the entertainment industry newspaper Variety confirmed Thursday.
Along with the reprisal of off-beat pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp will star as the long-suffering Native American sidekick Tonto in a new version of the iconic "Lone Ranger," produced by hit producer Jerry Bruckheimer. (emphasis added)

Goodness.
Pirates I - great. II - OK. III - sucked so bad I can't even comprehend I paid money to see it. Don't know if I could pay to see IV

How about:
If this wasn't enough for the 45-year-old actor, Depp will also play the Mad Hatter in director Tim Burton's adaptation of the classic "Alice in Wonderland," using a mix of 3D animation and performance capture technology similar to that used for 2007's "Beowulf."

I don't think I could pay to see 4. But I am looking forward to Alice.

I'm okay with Pirates 4. The franchise has gotten silly enough to accept a long string of sequels. And frankly, it's an open enough concept that they can change out casts and storylines to keep the franchise fresh enough to be fun. Just don't expect Shakespeare.
I hope they drop the Will-and-Elizabeth storyline though, since they pretty much tied up those strings. I wouldn't mind cameos, but I'd hope they wouldn't be the central characters. How about a storyline about the redhead getting swept up in a world of vice, becoming a "fille de nuit" and ending up a successful pirate (over the course of several movies, naturally). Like the Swann storyline, only a lowbrow chick instead of a Governor's daughter.
Alice could be cool. A little worried after seeing Burton's interpretation of Willie Wonka. But then again, Alice lends itself so well to weirdness that it could be wonderful. I've certainly seen worse Alices (than I imagine Tim Burton would do)

I just had an image of Carrot Top as "The Redhead" and it wasn't pretty.
So says I, Chernabog Jones.
I mostly enjoyed Pirates III but don't really have much interest in a fourth. No interest in a live action Alice (the whole enterprise from book to various adaptations -- including Disney's -- are way overrated in my opinion).
Really don't care about a Lone Ranger movie.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Alex is not their target audience ;)

I liked III waaaay better than II, which isn't saying much.
Like most series, the first one was great enough to inspire the crappiest set of lame sequels.
I waited till III was Netflixable, and I'll be doing the same with any subsequents. Johnny Depp used to have my respect for his acting choices. No longer.
Honestly, I'm not sure what the target audience is for a Lone Ranger movie. The octogenarian crowd, nostalgic for the days of radio drama probably aren't going to fill the theaters.
Even as a five year old watching it on Saturday mornings after cartoons wrapped up I recognized that it wasn't a very good TV show.
And the prospect of what they'll do to make it modern in its sensibilities makes me cringe, especially since it is just Batman with horses.

Danny DeVito should play the Lone Ranger.

Just saw III last week. Basically unwatchable. Just left it on in the background while I did other stuff. I would say it was equally bad as 2. When they introduced the weird sea monsters, that was enough for me.
Way to take a movie that was surprisingly good (I) and turn it into something that was surprisingly bad.
I think Klinton Spilsbury (the last guy to play the Lone Ranger, live action, in 1981) is still alive. He should get the role. Since that was his last (and only) Hollywood role, he could probably use the paycheck.

While the Kracken is at least a familiar sea legend, I do agree with you to the extent that there ought to be more old-fashioned swashbuckling and less magic/lazy screenwriting. More Erroll Flynn, less Ursula the Sea Witch.

The target is 11 year old boys. The Boy was just asking me about a 4th movie. Unfortunatly, I have seen all 3 movies more than I would care to admit.
Your 11 year old cares about The Lone Ranger?

No surprise to me.
A year or two ago, Disney announced a second trilogy of POTC films & that Johnny Depp would reprise his role as Capt. Jack Sparrow.

Pirates 1 was great. I'd rather stare into Lindsy Lohan's steamy crab infested hoo-haa than watch Pirates 2 or 3 again.
I loved Legend of the Lone Ranger when I was a kid. Wonder if it holds up?

Slight derail:
Disney's got worse ideas than a new pirates sequel (http://tv.msn.com/tv/article.aspx/?news=332249>1=28103)
Actually, it's not a terrible idea... motivate all those mommies to make sure they take their little girls out to see this particular Disney release. So I can't blame them. But it doesn't get me any more excited about the film (more interested in the New Orleans setting)
But yeah, I'm okay with a Pirates 4.

Oh goody
I don't see why that is horrible, Winfrey has done perfectly acceptable screen work. Sure, I prefer anonymous voices (not necessarily unknowns but voices that I don't immediately recognize as a specific real life person) in animated films but that ship is long sailed.

Well, and to be fair, it's not even her first voiceover work. Not that I bothered to see Bee Movie.
But you're right, now that I think about it, she was very good in The Color Purple.

I loved all three POTC films. It's a great trilogy, and should be left at that.
Did Disney learn nothing from Lucas's horrible mistake of a second trilogy?
So, I wonder what/who will be the Jar Jar Binks sidekick in POTC 4? I think they should introduce a Macken (half man, half cracken) that turns out to be Jack's love child resulting from his earlier momentary soirée with the beast. He should be completely CG, and voiced by Jeff Foxworthy, so it can imply that all inter-beast lovers are from the South.

Oh dear, the moment Jack has a kid, the series has truly jumped the shark. Even for Pirates.

Pirates 1 great. Pirates 2 ok. Pirates 3 sucked. Sorry i couldn't even finish watching it all the way thru the few times i tried. Thank goodness i didn't go to a theater to see it. I might try to sit down and watch it one more time. Pirates 4 i don't think so. Makes me wonder what Disney has on Jonny to get him to do another movie. Ah to be a fly on the wall. If only.

I watched POTC 3 all the way until the end. I even waited after the credits to see Will Turner return to Elizabeth and their son.
(Actually we were just waiting for everyone to leave. So we saw that part by accident) ;p

I'll go see a fourth Pirates movie if the running time is an hour and forty five minutes or less. (preferably less.) All three Pirates movies are bloated length-wise. The first one gets away with it by being better than it needed to be. (It would be better still if it lost about twenty minutes or so.) I can't make the same allowance for the other two. They overstayed their welcomes by over 60 minutes each.
And that third one was just a mess.
