Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as an activist, race car driver, popcorn impresario and the anti-hero of such films as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "The Color of Money," has died. He was 83.

Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.

There's a reason it took him so long to win an Oscar: He got better as he got older, which we should all aspire to. A good and generous man.

OMG, I guess I didn't know he had cancer but I am shocked. He did a lot of good things in his lifetime and will be sorely missed by many.

Oh, this hits me with such sadness. What a GREAT.

And yes, I like his "older" roles better than his sassy younger ones. Ah, that's wonderful inspiration to me as I head into that territory.

Noooooo, Paul :(

Heck, I even like his early stuff. A class act, this guy. And he makes some damn good spaghetti sauce. (Goes to kitchen to open a jar of Sockarooni Sauce.) Another good one gone.

Wow... this is terrible.

I had just shown some younger coworkers "Cool Hand Luke" for the first time last week, and they said it was better than any recent movie they'd seen.

I was just talking the other day that I had heard he wasn't well. I agree, he really was a class act and it's quite a loss. I will continue to buy his company's products because they taste great and the profits go to support charity. I hope it carries on in the spirit it was created.

Every now and then this happens, a public figure dies and I feel as if I've lost someone I personally knew. I felt like that when Jack Lemmon died. I feel like that know. I loved his talent, I loved his conscience and was he ever easy on the eyes. I saw him in person once, at a premier. Wow

He should have won for "The Hustler".

Damn. Just.....damn!

Very sad, indeed.
:(

Such a talented actor and an amazing philanthropist. $220 million to charity is quite an amazing feat.

RIP, his good works will continue through the several foundations he supported and the Newman's Own line.

Condolences to Joanne, they shared a wonderful life together.

He made some fine films, and a few bad ones, but he was a class act. I'll watch Butch & Sundance tonight in his honor, perhaps followed by Road to Perdition (or Cars).

RIP Paul

Too sad- he's one of my favorite actors, and a kind and generous man in real life. He was everything Brad Pitt wishes he could be.

I'm so bummed. Sure he was a great actor but he trancended that with his kindness and his belief that he could (and should) use his celebrity to help others and to aid causes that he believed in.

RIP Paul, you will be missed.

It was one of those things that even as we were discussing (http://www.loungeoftomorrow.com/LoT/showthread.php?t=8284&highlight=Paul+Newman) it a while back, I couldn't imagine actually happening. What a loss for the world from a man who had given so much kindness to the world.

Thanks for digging the thread up, it's a really nice tribute.

I've been dreading this loss, though I knew it was coming. I'd heard he had pancreatic cancer, which is what took my dad at the age of 82. The parallels (my dad didn't give millions to charity, but he did have sparkling blue eyes and meant the world to me) made this seem personal.

Paul Newman was such a remarkable man, who had a wonderful life worth celebrating. I am happy for him, that he no longer feels pain, but I'm so sad for his family.

A modest Philanthropist, when most seek fanfare. The ton of unhappy cheese says it all. If there is a Heaven, you'll be there Mr Newman.

Another slice for the pile: :(

I don't know why so many celebrity deaths lately are hitting me hard, maybe it's an age thing.

It was the first news I heard this morning and, although I knew it was on the horizon, I was still saddened. My heart goes out to His lovely wife of 50 years. He was truly a man to be admired.

A bunch of friends and I watched Cool Hand Luke tonight. Amazing film. There is a montage at the end showcasing his smile. It made me teary-eyed.
What an incredible human being.

RIP Paul.

I'l have a salad with his dressing and watch cars in his honor tonight, right after feeding my cats his cat food. Yes, he has Pauls own catfood.
