Farewell my friends. We shall miss your presence here on the Lot.
Cuz there ain't no frigging way in hell your posts are going to make it through the Great Firewall Wall of Australia (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20081016-net-filters-required-for-all-australians-no-opt-out.html).
Australians may not be able to opt out of the government's Internet filtering initiative like they were originally led to believe. Details have begun to come out about Australia's Cyber-Safety Plan, which aims to block "illegal" content from being accessed within the country, as well as pornographic material inappropriate for children. Right now, the system is in the testing stages, but network engineers are now saying that there's no way to opt out entirely from content filtering.

What a load of BS. Psh. Of course you can opt out... oh yeah... maybe not. I guess there's always proxies - unless those are somehow all blocked too.

1. Get a cheap shell account in Europe (probably Germany) or the US. $5/month or less.
2. ssh -D 1080 lashbear@your.shell.account
3. Set your Internet proxy to localhost:1080
Done!

This post heading is one of the most worrisome I' ve ever seen! Glad it didn't actually portend tragedy.
I'm confident the lashpair will find a way.

Not quite the same, but interesting that this (http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2008/10/17/ap5568640.html) is happening at the same time.

There are a lot of restrictions in the UK as well, where a lot of free video is blocked, since TV use is a taxed commodity there. I wonder what the rules in Canada are. They're under a BBC system, right?

Hmm, I'm not so sure that what we saw being blocked was so much governmental restriction as the content providers (NBC et. al.) not wanting to distribute their shows that way.

Dear All,
"I always wondered how long it would take for Government(s) to try and 'own' the Internet. You can't have people using such a powerful uncontrolled tool - they may hurt themselves" - The Stoat.
Thanks for the concern - you can imagine just how outraged we are at the idea of having our flow of information and media censored by a third party.
I haven't reached the age of 50 to be told what is appropriate or not for me.
Yes, I am concerned that children get to see and hear things that they shouldn't - but the responsibility for that lies with the parents - not the Government. If parents/carers/teachers allow access to 'privately' placed PC's then they are making the choice not to monitor the content that the kids are viewing.
So all of that is about choice and responsibility. The Government obviously has little faith in the ability of Australian adults to do the right thing, so it feels that it has to take the moral high ground...and fvck the rest of us that either don't have kids (or whose kids are over 20 in my case).
As for software piracy et al...I was in I.T. long before the Internet, and it existed then and it will continue to exist. I recall a time when (a now obscure) spreadsheet app called Lotus 123 sold for $1200, and consequently it was the most pirated title of the day. Serves them right for being so greedy...and now the product is all but dead.
My bet is that if regulations become too strict (and without options for those of us that already know about sex, drugs and rock and roll) that some new system will evolve. That's what always happens when people are censored and suppressed.
Anyway, I'll stay tuned at this end - perhaps write a few scathing letters to the dumb-fvck pollies that thought it mught be a good idea.
Love and hugs for many years to come,
The Stoat XXX.

And Also Dear All,
"If the Australian Government wants to take on the role and responsibility of being a 'surrogate' parent because it thinks that the actual parents aren't up to the task - let it take all of the responsibility. That would include censoring what the children eat, and prohibiting activities that might cause them injury such as football, gymnastics and diving...and while your at it, forbid the arts, hockey and netball because it turns the kids gay."
The Stoat.
In other words, you fvck-head Ozzie Pollies, take all of the responsibility or keep out of our faces. You can't have it both ways.
Love and hugs,
The Stoat XXX.

And Also Dear All,
"...and while your at it Stoat...for God's sake spell you're correctly".
...not that it matters, as you will be censored out of existence soon anyway.
My cheese is both sad and melted.

AUSTRALIA'S mandatory net filter is being primed to block 10,000 websites as part of a blacklist of unspecified "unwanted content".
I wonder if I could get a list of the blocked sites. It seems like that could save a lot of time if someone has already found all these sites.

Whew!
The end of the world has been canceled (http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2009/02/26/1235237810486.html).
The Government's plan to introduce mandatory Internet censorship has effectively been scuttled, following an independent senator's decision to join the Greens and Opposition in blocking any legislation required to get the scheme started.
You are now free to continue your normal postings.

Wait, if censorship is dead down under then why do I keep seeing articles like this one (http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/03/first-rule-of-internet-censorship-hide-the-block-list.ars)?
Like many countries, Australia currently runs a blacklist of child porn sites. And like many countries, it doesn't want that list published. It doesn't even want other countries' lists published, and is in fact banning such links.
