View Full Version : Those crazy Mormons

According to this article, Mormons are babtizing Jews that died in the Holocost post-humously - and really making other Jewish people upset.

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/B/BAPTIZING_THE_DEAD?SITE=KOIN&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2008-11-10-18-41-36

The story of course is that those in the Holocost were persecuted for being Jews and are now being made into Mormons. The idea is that those Mormons related to Jewish Holocost survivors will all be reunited in the afterlife if they are babtized. Of concern is if history will rewrite itself to say that Mormons were killed in the holocost.

It's called a Happy Bubble. The Mormons are in it.

ETA: I wonder how shocked they are that the world is really paying attention to their every move now. L.O.L.

While the practice of posthumous baptism by Mormons is silly, I'd say it is just as silly to be upset about it.

But to put the matter to rest and ease inter-religious stresses I just did a little ceremony here at my desk that makes each passed soul immune to rebaptism unless that soul wishes otherwise. Also, it makes them prettier than they were in their mortal life and just a tad smarter.

Since my little ceremony has all the effect as a Mormon necrobaptism I expect The American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors to name me their man of the year and present me with an attractive plaque I can display on my wall.

Also, and I understand this will upset some people, in the process I mismumbled a word of particular power and killed god. Sorry about that.

Owww! The acronyms, they hurt! (Really, I've tried to keep up, but Jeez-o'-Pete! There's so fvckin' many of them! I can't spend all day at the Urban Dictionary!) WTF is really common, so I know it. But then I encounter WTG, I start thinking "What The God? What The Ginmill? What The Ginger? After a while, I finally see that the WT doesn't stand for "What The" at all - its an acronym for Way To Go. I have a fleeting sense of euphoria. Maybe I can learn this stupid code yet! Then, next sentence - FTW? Fvck The Wealthy? Fix The Waterpipe? (*I looked it up - For The Win. Okay, that's funny. I'm amused and annoyed at the same time.) Then next post down - VAM. I give up!

Sorry to rant about something that most others have no problem with, but damn this stuff makes me feel old and useless.

Oh, and Alex's post? Hilarious!

I'm with Alex - Mormons, what-evah. I have relatives that died in the Holocaust, and I really don't care what oddness the Mormons think they're trying to do, because they're nutters.

"Nutter" is my word of the month, BTW. (psst, it means BY THE WAY. ;) )

The article I read pointed out that the upset is that future historians will have lists of Mormons who were killed in the Holocaust. And since the Mormons have an obsession with genealogical databases, they really do have an influence over what future historians will know about our religious make-up.

I know that the Mormons also posthumously baptize Native Americans, as well. The more you know, the nuttier they get.

I think the collections of the various holocaust museums and archives will be taken much more seriously by future historians than Mormon genealogical websites.

Probably, but I still wouldn't want grandma's name showing up on a list of people killed because of her Mormonism.

And since the Mormons have an obsession with genealogical databases, they really do have an influence over what future historians will know about our religious make-up.

That may be a valid issue (data integrity always is over the centuries) but per the article linked above anyway, that is explicitly not the issue here. They're upset about it happening even if that person does not end up in the International Genealogical Index (the database that lists all ordained -- personal or vicarious -- Mormons):

"Baptism of a Jewish Holocaust victim and then merely removing that name from the database is just not acceptable," said Michel...

But as JWBear says, I doubt that in a couple centuries anybody is going to think Adolf Hitler or George Washington or Albert Einstein were Mormons just because they show up in a database. In fact, I would guess that if anything it will eventually cast doubt on just how many Mormons there actually were.

Also, I'd point out my little thing in my humorous post about the dead person being immune to re-baptism is they so choose. It should be noted that the Mormons already believe that. They baptize the dead, and the dead, in the afterlife, have the ability to reject it. So spiritually it seems to me no harm, no foul, and isn't it fun watching people squabble over nonsense.

And yes, they do American Indians, if they can learn their names (that is why they do the genealogical research, they have to know the name) as well as any other person including you or me eventually.

That leaves 5 threads closed due to "personality conflicts" or similar unpleasantness.

The acronym, initialism, abbreviation debate takes me back to a bad place. A place in time where a very large web site (no, not MousePlanet) made the decision to be completely screen reader compliant and therefore we had to appropriately tag every one on our site so a screen reader would know to say I R S and not urz. Or to say nafta instead of N A F T A.

Whole meetings spend on edge cases (yes, the myth of the hyper-efficient megacorporation is just that) where something started out as an initialism but was moving into acronym land (IRA). Or has it moved so far from its roots that the average person no longer even knows it was an acronym (such as laser) and is now just a word.

And much wailing and gnashing of teeth over TIAA-CREF, JPEG, SFMOMA, and (the first half of each are initialisms, the second acronyms).

Eventually we just took the easy way out and killed all the lawyers making us do the useless exercise (since most screen readers, even when being told to read SQL as an acronym still didn't know how to pronounce it).
