The fun fact that I just learned is that if you check "Match case" on Firefox's page search, it remains checked even between browser sessions. And if you don't realize this, searching web pages becomes very frustrating and confusing.

There is a remake of "The Lone Ranger" in the works.

Johnny Depp is set to star. As Tonto (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2008/09/who-will-johnny.html).

So I guess the answer to your question would be: "me."

Chalk, Semen, Chestnut Blossoms[/B] is named for three things that apparently have the same smell...Um, what the hell are they making that chalk with? Cause I can assure you, normal chalk smells nothing like semen!

Should that be in the rant thread?

Depending on the cost, I think so. But I'm scratching my head, is anything insurance related a fun fact?

I think it refers more to limestone/lime than blackboard chalk.

I was more surprised by chestnut blossom, which I apparently have never smelled.

A modern diesel-electric locomotive can move one ton of freight an average of 202 miles n a gallon of diesel fuel. A modern 18-wheeler truck can only move a ton of freight 59 miles on the same gallon.

A modern diesel-electric locomotive can move one ton of freight an average of 202 miles n a gallon of diesel fuel. A modern 18-wheeler truck can only move a ton of freight 59 miles on the same gallon.

Of course what that doesn't account for is that trucks are still needed to get that ton of freight to and from the train, plus whatever other energy and monetary costs are involved with supporting the loading and unloading of the freight from the train.

Not that that invalidates the efficiencies of trains, but it's important to keep in mind that comparing raw stats like that is not necessarily and accurate way to judge two different options. There's a balance point where the overhead of trains outweighs the raw fuel savings over trucks.

Kevy Baby
12-01-2008, 11:20 AM
Oh, it misses a lot of details. How about the capital investment of a train? And the accompanying infrastructure? The much higher flexibility of delivery points of trucks?

I was just watching Modern Marvels while reading LoT and thought I would throw out a useless fact that I had learned.

You don't have to heat the cup of water before adding instant coffee. Stir your instant coffee into a cup of cold water, sweeten and lighten to taste, then microwave. Done. Why does Sanka want to make my life more complicated?

(Joe accidentally broke the carafe for our discontinued coffee grinder/maker and I don't know how to use the French press.)

Betty
12-01-2008, 01:06 PM
I think the fun fact you should be learning today is how to use that french press! Sanka? ew.

Morrigoon
12-01-2008, 01:11 PM
Jim: scoop your coffee in first, then pour in the water. That way it's half mixed before you even touch a spoon.

Alex
12-01-2008, 01:14 PM
This is not prompted by what it might seem like but I suppose it applies. And I'm not learning it but so much being reminded of it again:

People seem to think I am a pretty bright fellow capable of reaching reasonable conclusions. Until they disagree with me, then I must be dense. Until they agree with me again, at which point I return to brilliance.

It must cause me brain damage to whip so quickly from stupid to smart.

There are no measure marks on the press, I have no idea how to figure the water to coffee ratio.

If I dump cold water on top of instant, I get lumps. Which are gross when you accidentally drink them.

There are no measure marks on the press, I have no idea how to figure the water to coffee ratio. The water to coffee ratio should be on the bag of coffee. If you have whole beans, you want to get it ground for the press. Then use a measuring cup to figure out the water that goes in. It can take a little trial and error. It's also best to warm the press with some hot water first.
