Wireless or Wired help

Okay, I know I'm a moron, this can't be difficult. I plugged in the new laptop, left the old PC up, modem is plugged in (2wire) and switched the laptop to wireless. It located the closest connection and the message says I'm getting a strong signal, but I can neither browse not update AVG, tells me I'm not connected. ? I know I'm a doofus, but I'm lost.

I plugged in the modem to the USB, and still am not connected.
