I have a cassette tape with original music that was given to me by the artist years ago. Does anyone know the best cheap or free software to convert it to MP3?

I use Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) - it's free :)

More importantly than software, do you have the hardware? You'll need a line-in port on your soundcard. Don't use a mic port, it ain't the same. If you don't have a linein you'll either need a new sound card or a USB adapter (this (http://www.usbgear.com/USBG-X4S.html) is the best deal I've found for one so far.)

Yes, my PC has a dedicated audio-in port separate from the mic port.

One could also be lazy and spend money either by purchasing a device such as this one (http://www.amazon.com/Ion-Tape2PC-USB-Cassette-Deck/dp/B000VG802I/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1228594880&sr=8-1) or using a service such as this one (http://www.reclaimmedia.com/?gclid=CNajgpzprJcCFRlRagod4SAmjA).

For one tape? I don't think so.
