Greetings !!

I have recently ordered my first kilt, and hope the experience (and end product) will be satisfactory. I'm sure it will be, from the prompt response by the shop-owner.

Background (AKA Why do you want to wear a kilt?):

I am adopted, and my birth surname was Graham. I have red-blonde hair and fair complexion, and I like Haggis - so I therefore suspect that there is a bit of the Scot in me. Not knowing entirely who my father was makes this all the more mystery, but also makes the fact harder to disprove as well.

I have noticed that a lot of larger guys (ahem) look really good in Kilts. I have always toyed with the idea of getting one until recently...

Our work has a Casual Dress Month going at present. There were disagreements between factions as to whether 3/4 length pants are shorts, as shorts are banned. The final decree was passed, and... No shorts OR 3/4 pants allowed.

I feel the heat badly. If I have to wear full length trousers in an office in summer, I perspire, er, glow, er, sweat like a pig. BUT... the boss agreed with me and said "I would love to see you come in wearing a kilt". I have confirmed several times that I have ordered the kilt, and that I will be wearing it in the office as regular office wear. Soooo...

I have coming in the new year a Pure Wool 5-yard casual kilt made in Graham of Menteith Tartan, (the blue, not the red one) and a plain leather sporran from St Kilda Australia.

YES - I will be wearing it at Disneyland. Anyone have a riding-crop I can borrow? :D

I've never cared that much for dress kilts. (And I hate those frou-frou socks!) I think great kilts are much more manly looking.

I have a kitty named Haggis, Lash. She is an itty-bitty Scottish Fold, and a more foul tempered cat would be hard to find. She is very cute, though. Her full name is Haggis Matilda Stewart McCat.:D

Can't wait to see pics. :) If I'd known you had a Clan in mind I would have picked up a Graham scarf when we were there! As it is, I probably bought the "Rape and Pillage Clan" scarf.

I finally officially joined my clan (Campbell) when we were at the Seaside Highland Games in October. Our kilt is the "Black Watch." I've got all the gear including the fun frilly shoes and socks :D . I'm also taking highland drumming lessons...woo!

A utilikilt is not a kilt.
Utilikilt's are not really trad, and so are not really suitable for business wear. Besides, Sporrans are more fun than pockets... (och, laddie, reach into me sporran & get me car-keys...)

I think great kilts are much more manly looking.
and MUCH more overheating too - especially in Summer !!

I LOOVE to eat Haggis, but I'll spare Haggis Matilda Stewart McCat on account of her cute name !!

Pics shall follow as soon as the Kilt arrives, promise !

Since Pakoras Umbridge (so named by the Stoat for the amazing resemblance sans English ethnicity) started all of this workplace dress code shyt, I've kinda been thinking about the footwear.

No open-toed shoes for you Jim Lad...and who knows, perhaps Pakoras may end up wearing the size 10's where the sun don't shine.

Love and hugs,

The Stoat XXX.

Is that a jab at PC's ? :pNo, just a humourous coincidence. I looked up my lineage at a Scottish festival a few years ago and made the discovery.

A utilikilt is not a kilt.I disagree 100%. True, it's not a traditional kilt, but to say it's not a kilt seems like denial to me.

I love wearing my Utilikilt (http://www.utilikilts.com/) to work, Disneyland, grocery shopping, or anywhere I want to feel unbifurcated.

Oh, you otherly-world mundanes may think it is; but pre-1595, it is not.

Oh, you otherly-world mundanes may think it is; but pre-1595, it is not.

By that standard, none of the typical Victorian dress kilts are "real" kilts either.

I know nothing of Victorian Kilts. Mine is Scottish (and it may very well not be correct either for all I know).

This kind of outfit is Victorian in origin (it was first seen in the mid 19th century). In other words, what most people think of when they hear "kilt". (And I think they look perfectly silly.)

I believe my kilt is the a 9-yard long 18 or 20 ounce tartan. Some day, I may actually put it on.

Prudence

I think the utilikilts are much more in keeping with the spirit of the original kilt than the Victorian flavor.

I thought Campbell was yellow and black?

My name seems to be a sept of the clan Lamont, whose tartan (http://www.lindaclifford.com/LamontSA.html) is very similar to black watch.

Lashbear, I hope you'll bring your kilt out here to model for us, going commando, of course and if so, I'll be, "ahem", ...checking to make sure.

I've thought about getting a Sport Kilt myself, the kind that many of the Highland gamers wear. I'm not Scottish, but Manx, so there are no tartans for Manx (wish there was!), so I'm considering a tartan they've developed for California.

Is there a tartan for crazy people?Wow, it is amazing what you can find in this world. This came up while making a search for you (not real bad, but probably NSFW):

And while I did not find the tartan straight jacket I was looking for, I did find this atrocious outfit:

There's a couple Mutaytor fans with black utilikilts with EL wire designs on them.

I'll try to get pictures if they show up at the Mayan show next month.

Kilts are hot. Utilikilts are also hot.

I'm counting the days till my man buys one. He has looked at them before, but hasn't crossed to the unbifurcated dark side yet.

I love the kilt idea. Can't wait to see pics!

But I must ask - you mentioned how hot (temperature) it's going to be - and it's a wool kilt? Won't that be hot - and itchy?!

(and yeah- I'm sure it's going to be hot (not temperature-wise) as well!)

(and yeah- I'm sure it's going to be hot (not temperature-wise) as well!)Any skirt-shaped clothing would be cooler than what men are used to. As for itchyness - yeah, you won't catch me in a wool skirt without undies, but I'm sure such hairy bears are less susceptible ;)
