Locals Swank Stop and Home of the world's second largest shrine to the Coolest Cat of all time (Elvis!), Azteca Mexican Restaurant on Historic Main Street in Garden Grova, CA lost it's liquor license this last week - and got hit HARD.

Goonie, Lance and I were virtually the only people in the place last Saturday night.

So.... If you can, please come support one of the last truly friendly neighborhood places in OC. These people do a ton for the community and put on some of the most racously fun times to be had anywhere around.

We'll be there this Saturday night, 1/31 following our gaming adventure. I'll post what time I think Lance and I will show up as soon as I know...don't fret, they are always there till 2 AM!

Thanks. ;)

Did it just get temporarily suspended?

Why'd they lose their license? (will they get it back or was it revoked?)

I don't live down that area - but my husband works over there. I'll have to tell him to try it for lunch.

Please folks. Don't let this wonderful place go out of business before I have the chance to see it. Don't make me beg!!!!

I've been there. Good home-style Mexican food combined with a somewhat bizarre Elvis shrine. I agree, please support the place!

Yes, just for one week, but that was enough to really hit them hard. As any who've been there know, their business is the Crooner's Crowd.

I don't know if I'm reading things right but looking at their record at ABC (http://www.abc.ca.gov/datport/LQSData.asp?ID=2029814686) it appears that the issue may not be disciplinary.

Apparently they initiated a license transfer last year and have been functioning under temporary licenses. I wonder if the problem was in that process.

So I say go ahead and eat without worrying that they were busted for serving 4-year-olds.

Well, whatever it was, it cost them a week worth of liquor sales, which is rough when you consider how much of their take is probably margaritas.

Yeah; ain't gonna get any support from me. Susan got second degree burns from this place. I was never really impressed with the food.

A plate that never should have left the kitchen. It was really bad, though if I remember correctly the manager did handle it properly. Not that it excuses the improper plate handling to begin with.

I've got a stick. Where's that dead horse?

Maybe it isn't a good idea to post about the place here anymore, since it's apparently so horrible.

Ya know, I had an accident on the Disney Magic during our honeymoon that left me with severe back pain and limited range of motion that still lingers to this day, due to a slick deck surface. Yet, I don't keep bringing it up every time someone mentions the cruise line.

This is precisely why I won't even post the video from the karaoke that night, because I'm sure it'll just get shot down.

I am truly sorry that S. got burned, and I worried about her greatly. But, I'd like to at least remember the fun and that it was my birthday rather than being the consistent "Night of the Hot Plate Incident".

(This post brought to you by my finally deciding that my feelings matter too.)

It's ok. It just really rubbed me the wrong way, ya know? :(

I certainly don't discount anything that happens to my friends, but there's a point where it becomes overly stale.

In all fairness I was also curious as to what had happened.

Unfortunate, all around. When I first saw the thread I will admit that the first thing I wondered was if it referred to the same place where S. got hurt on T.'s birthday. No one would have chosen anything like that to happen, that's obvious. It's hard to forget things like that, and I wasn't even there. I felt awful about it for everyone. A horrible thing to have happened on any day. Much suckage that it happened on T.'s birthday.

(This post brought to you by my finally deciding that my feelings matter too.)Had this not been a "let's help out Azteca thread," I would not have said anything. But since it is SPECIFICALLY about the place, I do not regret having brought it up.

I do not want to hurt your feelings T. In fact, we tried to leave as quietly as possible that evening so as not to disturb your celebration. But that fact is that Susan received second degree burns as a result of a direct error on the part of an employee of the restaurant. Further, I have received ZERO response from Azteca (or their insurance company) since that evening (actually: since I gave them the information a week after the incident). We simply want to get reimbursed for the emergency room co-pay.

My feelings about the place have NOTHING to do with your birthday or even you: my feelings are 100% about Azteca.

Let others post their positive feedback of the place - I do not deny them that. But also let me express my displeasure.

Being that I have been busy with full time work and school, plus a very serious and still new romantic relationship, I haven't been on the LoT much lately and I was honestly unaware of what had ocurred that evening. I was just getting to the party as Kevy and Gus Gus were leaving and I didn't realize anything was wrong. I'm very sorry to hear of your injury and bad experience!

That said, this thread was written to encourage assistance for Azteca. Now, it looks as though more harm than good has been done for them. Perhaps the thread should be removed, please? :(

In any case, I plan to be there between 9:30 and 10 PM this coming Saturday, 1/31/09 to get a drink and watch the karaoke crowd. I hope others will join too.

It does have a fun atmosphere (though Karaoke is not my thing). Don't stay away on my accord.

Ok, I'll chime in ... I thought the place provided a wonderful good time. Of course, the company was great. But the decor all around, the happy staff, and especially the tongue in cheek (and other places) decor of the restrooms make the place legendary to me.

That said - and based on my one-time, personal experience only - the food was so-so and the margaritas were meh. I'd still come down Saturday night if I am able, but I have prior plans.

And frankly, I don't see how a week without a liquor licence is going to sink the place. If they are that close to going under, I don't think a week without booze sales is going to save them in the long run. On the other hand, they are an inexpensive restaurant that might have a better niche in the Great Depression II.

But if not, I can't get too worked up about this restaurant closing when 70,000 people lost their jobs THIS WEEK ALONE in the U.S.

I know people are fond of the place, though. And I hope it survives. In solidarity with those friends of mine who are friends of Azteca, I will head down there Saturday night if my iffy plans go south. Azteca is unique and it deserves a reprieve.
