View Full Version : Betting on the Super Bowl for fun and profit

Okay kids, this one's free...the next'll cost ya.

2-bet parlay:

Cardinals to win (+200)
Over 46.5 total points scored

$50 to win $235 (4.7:1)

There's not a lot of value at this Super Bowl. The Steelers are 7 point favorites...and in all reality, that line is probably spot on. A good play, I believe, is to go with an underdog if it has a realistic chance to win and handcuff that bet with the most likely path to victory. In this case, if the Cardinals win, it'll most likely be because they scored and scored again. So if you like the Cards to win, you might as well throw in the Over to bump the odds from 2-1 to 5-1. Is there a better than 20% chance that Arizona will score enough to win this game? Fvck and yes. In fact, I'd put the likelyhood of an Arizona win (and, it follows, covering the over) at close to 40%. This bet is one of the few ways to get the best of it this year.

Prop bets:

I don't usually mess with Super Bowl prop bets but two caught my eye this year.

Anquan Boldin...MVP (15-1)

This is a good value for an incredible talent with something to prove. With all the attention Fitzgerald is sure to draw from Pitt's D, Boldin is an absolute steal here for this price.

MVP thanks:

sportsbook.com is giving odds on who the MVP will thank first during his post-game interview. Check out this lead-pipe cinch:

God -125 (bet $125, win $100)

Sweet fvcking Moses! Martha, I need $100,000 to put on God. Seriously, is there any chance the MVP doesn't thank God first? Nope. And if Kurt Warner wins it, Oh Lord! Bet the farm on this one, people. You'll thank me later.

Isn't "who the MVP thanks" bet just about the most easily manipulated outcome possible and if the player did manipulate it not one non-bettor would care.

If I were friends with a player I'd be texting them right now saying "hey, as a favor to me, if you win MVP could you start by thanking buttersquash?"

As for the game, I'm going to place my bet on the league's humiliation being completed. That is, the Cards to win.

For the purposes of wagering, are God and Jesus considered a single divinity or separate entities?

Alex

I'd say it depends on the religion of the speaker and whether it is trinitarian.

For Warner that would be a strong yes on same, but maybe the speaker is a Jehovah's Witness/Muslim/etc. and so no, different.

So for fairness, the post-game interview should start with "before we get into it, what religion are you?"

I don't really care about the football part. I'm in it for the commercials and the food but being a West coast girl, I'll go for the Cards!

Unless a receiver breaks off some huge RACs, I would think the quarterback who throws him the ball would win MVP. Is there a "Matt Leinart for sucking" option on the MVP thanks bet?

Sadly, I must root for the team from Arizona. I do like the Kurt Warner story, and Roethlisberger's about as big a drip in the God department. Plus, a Cardinal win will prove once and for all that the NFC West is the toughest division in football.

Niners! NINERS!!

For the record, here's the board for who the MVP might thank first:

Coach +600

Does not Thank Anyone +500

Family +400

God -125

Teammates +200

I remember when people around here felt it was the Niners(!) birthright to be playing in the SB every year.

I admit to never being a Cards fan, but I am somewhat drawn to this team. I like teams that no one gives a chance to, and in every playoff game the mantra was "the Cards have no chance" and "they are the worst playoff team in NFL history".

I also am typically turned off by the superstars, but Larry Fitzgerald is a humble, down to earth kind of guy from what I've seen. I like the great ones that don't act like they are. Always loved Barry Sanders for the same reason.

The Cards were able to pick up the Eagles' blitzes and Warner and his receviers read them very, very well. Uness Pittsburgh can get to him Cards win.

It had been a while since I caught the dese dem dose sports betting boys who take up our sports talk radio station Saturday morning.

Perhaps due to the recent sure thing losses in the stock market, they're now calling themselves a sports investment firm.

Okay: the 100 yard interception return by Harrison was freakin' cool!

Been a lot of interesting plays so far: not a bad game in the first half.

Re the halftime show: when did Norm Crosby start impersonating Bruce Springsteen?

Was at the biggest Super Bowl party held in a private home I'm ever been. Kind of an odd experience for most of the game but made for huge crowd vibe in the last few minutes.

Now to just find out why people seem to think that I'll appreciate if they get drunk and then start letting out the racial slurs (it was just one person who I just avoided for the rest of the night, it isn't like I found myself in the middle of a klan party).

I enjpyed the game, but I was really wanting to see some great commercials. Overall, I am pretty disappointed. I loved the first Dorritos commercial, and the Bud one with the horse & dog playing fetch. Those were the only ones that got my attention.

I'm pretty sure it was lip synced. That's pretty common, really, and I get it. Singing in a HUGE open arena with reverb, etc, is exceptionally difficult and it is not uncommon to have it prerecorded. Though I don't know for sure.

Good entertaining game. The only commercial I really liked was the Troy Palumalu (or however the heck you spell his name - the safety from Pittsburgh) and the take off on the Mean Joe Green Coke commercial ("Hey Kid - Catch"). That was amusing.

I think in general that ad agencies are trying too hard to be clever and over think it.

Never found the $100k. All I bet was $50 on the Cards/over and $5 on Boldin for MVP

Hmm... they didn't give him the chance to say thanks. How do they rule it? I assume they void the play and refund all bets.

F*ck knbc for those 2 WAY TOO LOUD 10 second spots for something or other after the game. WTF was that?

The bookmaker odds, possibly something significantly different but only in reflection of irrational gamblers.

Scaeagles (or any other Arizona-based LoTers), did you get to see the dong (http://deadspin.com/5144207/bonus-comcast-super-bowl-coverage-porn?skyline=true&s=x) after Fitzgerald's long touchdown?

(Link is safe. NSFW video available on link, however.)

"KVOA will continue to investigate what happened to our clean signal and make sure our viewers get answers," Nielsen said in the statement. Comcast spokeswoman Tracy Baumgartner confirmed that the company's standard feed was interrupted during the Super Bowl, although she said its high definition feed was not.

Baumgartner said engineers at Philadelphia-based Comcast were investigating Sunday night. Tucson media outlets reported that they received calls from irate viewers about the pornographic material. Joel Hilander of Tucson told The Associated Press that he and his young children saw the clip. "I couldn't believe it. And I couldn't believe that my children were watching it either," Hilander said.

LMAO:

OMG! I am SOOO angry about this. I don't think I will be watching the super bowl anymore. I had just called my teenaged daughter in to have her watch the replay of the last play. And then that comes on. I am furious. And it kinda kept you watching cuz you were thinking, 'ok, this HAS to be part of a really bad commerical' — Ann C. (backroadsann), February 1,2009 @ 8:41PM

Assuming the ceremonial coin had a relatively even weight distribution between heads and tails.

Not really, assuming it is random which will be called by the player.

If the toss is biased 75%/25% in favor of heads but the player is randomly making their call they'd still be right 50% of the time.

But yeah, my main point in the response was that the previous 11 outcomes are irrelevant to the setting of the odds for this coin toss. There are certainly other biasing factors in the current toss that could have an impact (such as that soldier doing the toss being an expert coin tosser able to produce a desired result and he's from Tucson).

I wish my TV gave me random porn.

I don't understand why people get so upset; it's not as if any network is going to -- as a policy decision -- do it on purpose. If you're child is that fragile that a few second of squeak and bonk is harmful then you probably should just hit them in the head with a rock right now.
