View Full Version : Isaac Mizrahi, Meet Liz Claiborne
Isaac Mizrahi is working for Liz Claiborne now. (http://www.lizclaiborne.com/brand/shop_the_look) The potential is huge. It's Isaac at a Liz pricepoint.
Fab or drab, Swanky Ones?
I'm going with drab. It kills me to say it. Exhibit A: this (http://www.lizclaiborne.com/brand/shop_the_look#/0/2) The ugliest, most unflattering dress to the largest segment of the female population I have seen in a long, long, loooooong time. You've got your horizontal lines, your flounces, your heinous green graduated polka dots - all in one place! Cherry on top: the gladiator sandals with. Note that you can also get the look in a skirt, just in case you want to make your hips and rear look bigger. If I had to make a dress for my worst enemy, this is it.
Have a look and let's hear what you think.

I guess if you have no figure at all like the model, it's great. I can't imagine that would look good on anyone else.

It could be a love/hate thing for me. I like certain aspects of the collection, (ie. the polka dots that get bigger as the tiers go down) but not the total execution.

There doesn't seem to be much cohesiveness in the Spring Collection. There are a lot of 50's Dior-inspired ensembles mixed in with 70's shirt dresses and boring Talbots "career wear". I appreciate the 50's stuff, but don't wear that silhouette much. The rest of it seems a bit dull.

Wow, Not Afraid really is a gay man! ;)

That's really an interesting point, Lisa. Do you think Isaac knows his audience? He's such a talent but Liz is for middle aged ladies, none of whom could or would (I hope) wear anything like the polka dot dress. The other looks could work, depending.
I described that polka dot dress to the hubbo. "Is it a clown costume?" he wanted to know. He was serious. My sister said "It's sort of weird - Liz Claiborne with a little style. He did very well for Target, he might do well for Liz. I haven't bought Liz in years, but it always did last a long time."

The polka dog dress is really cute - if you're Paris Hilton or one of those twin drug addict kids. Maybe he's trying to infuse some youth into the audience mix.

Ahhhhhh, I'm melting!
I thought Liz Claiborne was a cosmetics line so shows what I know.

Ahhhhhh, I'm melting!
In other words, I don't think it is cute AT ALL.

Imagine anyone with breasts wearing that monstrosity. Or even half a breast.
Some of the Target stuff was cute though.

I started writing another post saying something similar, but then I accidentally closed the tab. Boo... but perfect observation, IMO.

It's actually the other part of what I wanted to post earlier. I am absolutely positive he was brought on to re-brand Liz Claiborne, which IMO, is a name that is rarely mentioned when it comes to high fashion any more. Not that I'm some expert... just someone on the fringe that pays attention here and there.

I like the use of Polka Dots, but there's nothing really interesting about the outfits themselves - well maybe the bit of flounce in the one skirt. The stripes might be fun to wear to an 80's revival, but still this all seems to safe. I think the collections done for target were much more fashion forward

I disagree. I think it is cute, fresh, very "Isaac". I see a definite flow from his Target days to this. The big flowers, mix of patterns, past trends redefined (I totally pick up a '70s vibe with the spring collection).
I really, really like looks #3, #9 and look #14 (in the Spring 2009 look book (http://www.lizclaiborne.com/brand/lookbook)). #9 is the diagonal dress that is already for sale but paired with a windowpane plaid coat lined in polka dot fabric (much better than with the matching jacket). Love it.
I haven't looked at Liz Claiborne for years but I would totally wear lots of this stuff (the polka dots notwithstanding), I think that's their idea here...it's not your mother's Liz.

I also thought it looked like a clown outfit.
My major education on clothing is from What Not To Wear, and from the looks of it, Isaac hasn't watched it. ;) These clothes are shapeless. I guess that's what's in right now, but I'm still addicted to structured outfits which actually flatter me. Even though I have small boobs I think these outfits look lame.

If it would look good on anyone, it would be you, but I also say lame.

Polka dot dress/skirt is a miss. Interestingly, neither of those appear in the Spring look book.

Last year, Liz Claiborne had the divine Tim Gunn fronting their design team. That's not really an accurate way to say that ... it was more that he was the figure head tastemaker for the company. He allowed his name and image to be associated with the clothes but most of those clothes seemed so unworthy of the Tim Gunn Seal of Approval. But Tim Gunn is old, and I can say this as pretty much his contemporary. Even though my daughters love "Project Runway", they could care less if Tim Gunn says Liz Claiborne is okay.
Isaac Mizrahi is going to be a dab of wasabi in the big vat of mayo that is Liz Claiborne. It will be fun to watch him having fun.

Liz is for middle aged ladies,
When I read this last night something struck me odd -and then I figured it out today. It was the first time I realized I am middle aged. Reminded me of the first time in the workplace when I realized I wasn't 'one of the kids' any more.
I didn't particularly care for this stuff - I like structure better. Flowy stuff that's big enough for my bottom half hangs horribly on my shoulders, and even though my middle is far from small, it's not as big as my bottom half, so if it doesn't have a semblance of 'shaping' it adds pounds (if the shoulders even fit.)

Oh how I feel ya, sister. I had my realization of the same and it was, at best, unpleasant for me.
My clothes are an eclectic mess of a mix, but I do have some really tailored stuff which has held up well. I just don't wear it very often.

I am old enough to:
- know what I want
- have the freedom to go after it
- rely on the experience of 51 years of living to make better choices.
Since having young body to do all this in isn't an option, I'll just continue aging to perfection.

My first thought seeing the polka dot dress was "Strawberry Chips"
A puffer nylon blazer with horizontal quilting. Isaac Mizrahi, are you bleeping kidding me?

Combined with the turtleneck I believe the intent is to make your head a visual surprise.
Nothing...nothing....nothing....nothing...OHMYGAWD AHEAD!
It is a sartorial recreation of those floating head Blue Shield commercials (which are probably regional).
