View Full Version : Hershey's you are really dead to me now

Joseph Schmidt has been a favorite spot for me for years. It was bad enough when Hershey's bought him out, the chocos were still locally made and delish. The variety started getting compact, which was a shame. The dark chocolate mint leaves were to die for.

So last week the news goes out Hershey's will close the local factory and produce the Schmidt line elsewhere (BAH). Now they're closing the Schmidt store (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/02/10/BUAI15QPBM.DTL&tsp=1). (Double BAH)

Bastards.

And unless I use something else, no more s'mores either. Gack! Will I resort to Ghiradelli? No, Belgian choco for my s'mores!

To add fuel to the fire, I believe they're doing the same (or similar) thing to Scharffen Berger.

Yes, MP, you are correct. Schrerffen Berger, the spokesperson and co-founder basically said he was glad the other founder was dead and did not live to see this happen.

I highly recommend Green & Black Maya Gold (http://www.greenandblacks.com/us/what-we-make/bars/maya-gold.html) bars for s'mores.

I work two blocks from Sharffen Berger. So far as I know the factory is all that is closing. The store/cafe will still operate.

However, nobody who works here ever goes there to buy or eat. You can blame us for any continuing closures.

Bay Area residents should try Charles Chocolates (http://www.charleschocolates.com/).

I work in the same building as the Charles Chocolates factory. I don't like dark chocolate (and at $60-$80/pound I don't like milk chocolate enough to try their limited selection) so I've never had it but others here say it is pretty good.

They don't actually make their own chocolate though, so if that matters to you they are just re-purposing quality chocolate made by others (including, for now anyway Sharffen Berger).

Charles Chocolates has only been here about 18 months so it is new. But yes, when the chocolate makers moved out of San Francisco (Ghirardelli's actual working plant is in San Leandro and all of the tourists just go to San Francisco) a lot of them took up in the industrial parts of the East Bay including Emeryville (there are a lot of industrial and co-op kitchen places here as well and those tend to spawn small businesses in the same neighborhood) and the southern part of Berkeley. But even here most of them have been gentrified out.

I'm one of them: whenever I visit the City, I always go there. But mainly because they tend to have a really good selection. There used to be a great Mexican restaurant right above Ghirardelli's, but I don't know if they are still there (my memory on the restaurant is more than 10 years old, so I doubt that it is the same).

But I once spent a very pleasant afternoon on their patio drinking margaritas and getting very hammered.

Unless things have changed since the initial announcement in December, Kellogg's bought Mother's Cookies' assets and plans to continue the frosted animal cookies.

Many of you have been asking about the future of Mother's cookies, so we contacted Kellogg's with your questions. In our inbox from a Kellogg's spokesperson today: Kellogg Company plans on reintroducing many of Mother's Cookies back into stores on the West coast by June, 2009. While we may not have all varieties of Mother's Cookies available at that time, we are working on some of your favorites like Mother's Circus Animals, Mother's Iced Oatmeal cookies, Mother's Parade Animal cookies, Mother's Chocolate Chip, Mother's Coconut Cocadas, Mother's Macaroons, Mother's Taffy Sandwich cookies, Mother's English Tea cookies, Mother's Double Fudge Sandwich cookies, Mother's Vanilla Crème Sandwich cookies, and Mother's Iced Lemon cookies.

Thank you! Yes, I found online that Kellogs plans to relaunch some of the line in mid 2009.

In the mean time I'm buing some Circus Animals for my wife online as a "one last time" chance to have the originals.

That's a real shame, they were pretty high quality chocolate. A bit bitter for my taste (even their milk was pretty dark), but still quality.

Chocolate !!!!!!

If only we could have scratch and sniff posts...

Has anybody ever tried Tcho (http://www.tcho.com/) chocolate? I ordered a sample pack a few months ago. Pretty good, although a little too bitter for me (which is really kind of a first...I've never met a chocolate that was too bitter). I do admire their maker spirit, but I think they're too overpriced. Especially for "beta" chocolate.
