The landmark gay bookstore in West Hollywood is going to close its doors (http://instinctmagazine.com/the-watercooler/a-different-light-goes-dark-in-west-hollywood.html) soon.

This saddens me greatly. ADL has hosted many events over the years that have had a big impact on my life. Back in the days when I frequented WeHo, I would always stop by ADL and see what was new.

When I was young and just coming out, I would go to ADL and feel comfortable. It was a safe environment and not cacophonized by music and flashing lights.

I can take comfort in knowing ADL San Francisco will be staying open as well as their on-line store adlbooks.com (http://www.adlbooks.com/).

I am saddened when any (of the formerly many) independent bookstores close. We've lost so many.

Not that losing a special place doesn't suck but how many people now lamenting actually patronized the place?

There was a documentary up here on the closing of Cody's Books in Berkeley and on the last night the store was packed with people crying and saying they shopped there all the time and how important the store was to the community. Then the owner talks to the camera and says (paraphraising) "bull, if half the people who said they shopped here every week did we wouldn't be closing."

I would buy something if I were in the area. Sadly, there aren't any independent bookstores in my area. The last two times I was near the Bodhi Tree I bought stuff there.

Sad that ADL is closing.
