Apparently (http://www.tvweek.com/news/2009/03/sci_fi_channel_aims_to_shed_ge.php) "Sci Fi" is to geeky and they think "Syfy" is going to cure their image problem.
Are those execs morons or do they just think we are?

Are those execs morons or do they just think we are?
Yes.
It's a stupid name change.
That said, it is pretty rare for the Sci-Fi Network to show much of anything that Sci-Fi would want associated with it. And what little it does will be cut in half when BSG ends.
That said, while stupid there is a non-stupid (from a different perspective than fandom anyway) reason behind it. "Sci-Fi" is not trademarkable. "SyFy" is.

It just makes them look like they can't spell. Like the way overdone replacing of the letter "c" with the letter "k" as if that makes something "kooler" than it was before. (see? just makes one look like a moron)
Silly executives, don't you know that geek is the new cool?

Never got into BSG, so I'm afraid I haven't even tuned to the channel since the Farscape days. I don't care what they call it.
But I think Psy Fye would be better.

If the Sci Fi Channel really wants to improve its image, it should stop running those extremely cheap, "monster of the week" Sci Fi Original Movies.

If the Sci Fi Channel really wants to improve its image, it should stop running those extremely cheap, "monster of the week" Sci Fi Original Movies. And wrestling. Seriously, what the flying fück does wrestling have to do with science fiction!?!
And professional bullsh¡tters like Ghost Hunters, Destination "Truth", "Unexplained", and scumbag charlatans like John "The Biggest Douche in the Universe" Edward.
And Japanimation whose subject matter is not related to science fiction.
Color me crazy, but if you're going to form a network called Sci-Fi (ridiculous spelling permutations aside), then you should be airing science or speculative fiction programming. Does Lifetime show demolition derbies? Does BET show Yan Can Cook?
It just kills me when I see the network that gave us terrific shows like Farscape, the Stargates, and Battlestar Galactica spewing out the aforementioned schlock and/or flim-flam showcases. You are capable of giving us truly outstanding programming. Why must you soil yourself with all this other crap.

There has been nothing worth watching on Sci-Fi since Farscape went off the air. (I never could get into BSG.)
And wrestling. Seriously, what the flying fück does wrestling have to do with science fiction!?!
On this one I cut them some slack. Everybody involved acknowledges that wrestling has nothing to do with the network and it doesn't belong there.
However, NBCUniversal was contractually obligated to carry it even after they didn't want to any more and Sci-Fi was the dumping ground that best fit the minimal effort needed.
Kind of like why ABC Family kept showing The 700 Club. ABC didn't want it, but they were stuck with it.

And if Star Wars is sci-fi (it's not; it's pure fantasy), then wrestling is sci-fi (because it's also pure fantasy).

Okay, I'll elaborate. ;)
Star Wars is Science Fantasy. But Sci Fi has traditionally had a lot of overlap (fan-wise) with pure Fantasy (e.g., Lord of the Rings) as well as Horror. So I'm perfectly willing to let the Sci-Fi channel air Star Wars, sword & sorcery, and even the occasional horror flick.
Yes, pro-wrestling is 100% fabrication, but so are Hello Kitty cartoons and we don't see those on Sci-Fi.
Alex, I was not aware of the contractual obligations issue. That certainly sheds some light on the situation, ugly as it may be.

Actually, Syfy should be pronounced "Siffy" or "Syph-y" which sounds a bit syphalitic if you ask me.

Actually, Syfy should be pronounced "Siffy" or "Syph-y" which sounds a bit syphalitic if you ask me.There actually are a lot of people in the Sci-Fi fan community who pronounce it "skiffy", especially in reference to a person who is a fan. As in, "I met Pat's new boyfriend at the Creation con last month. Fortunately for Pat, this one is a skiffy."

GD, that was kinda funny. But to geek out a little, the Starship Size Comparison Chart is pretty cool and the first time I've seen such a clear comparison of so many different universes' ships at a glance.

I was going to say that, but I thought the Intrepid and the Yeager were actual ship names, so I second guessed.

There are occasions when the class and the name of the ship are the same, but it's not typical.

Intrepid is in fact a ship name and a class. If memory serves starfleet designates the name of the first ship in a new class as the class name.

That's called a lead ship and it's a long naval tradition; the first ship of a class also names the class. There are a few exceptions, but that's the general rule.
And here's (http://www.st-minutiae.com/misc/comparison/comparison_large.png) a similar pic that I've always thought was really cool, too.

Heh, I didn't ever realize that one was different universes. I just put "star wars" in a Google image search, saw the image with some tie fighters, an imperial transport, and some Calamari Cruisers and didn't look any closer. I did notice that some of the ships looked more...organic than the usual Star Wars universe, but I assumed that they were taken from the newer incarnations (prequels, animated stuff, etc.).
