The play is going quite well. We had a kick-ass rehearsal tonight.
Been totally busy lately. Haven't been able to keep up with much besides work and the play. Occasionally, I have checked in here and on Facebook but haven't had much time to post. (I still have to finish up my South Pacific trip report. D'oh!)
And, yes, I'm scruffy at the moment. I was asked by the director not to shave at all from about a week ago and he doesn't want me to shave again until after the play closes (May 31st). I'm going to be very beard-y by the 31st. :D
Anyway, hope all is well. Will try to post pics soon.

I just did a phone interview for one of the newspapers here about the play. I think being interviewed is cool. I could get used to that. :) If he prints anything, I'll post it here.
The production and publicity shots are coming soon, too. I'll post those if I can later. They're pretty wacky.
All in all, I'm loving this show. It's good to be doing theatre again.

This is the funny yet tender story of two bumbling Alabama brothers who believe they shot a celestial being. As they lament their fates in a murky swamp, they are chased by a cynical tabloid journalist and his reluctant photographer, who don't believe any of it until feathers, wings and a tiara are discovered along the way. The play hysterically interweaves a love story, sibling rivalry, tawdry media, race relations and cultural stereotypes as the chase to find the angel builds to a crescendo in the swamp. Ultimately a sweet allegory about redemption, this is a rare comedy with a surprisingly heartfelt lesson.

Can I just say that opening night was the best night ever? We had a stellar audience and the cast was right on the money. We got laughs throughout and had to hold for the laughter on several occasions (which is such a great feeling). A standing ovation and great feedback from the audience afterward.
I had the best night ever.
A couple of hours before the show started we found out that our stage manager was taken to the emergency room because of severe pains in his stomach and abdomen. Scary stuff. But we had someone step in for him and she totally rocked. It was like she was our SM from the very beginning.
Despite a couple of technical hitches that the audience was unaware of, the show went flawlessly. Reviewers and other prominent theatre directors and producers came to the show. I had a lot of great feedback about my character. One lady asked me what part of Alabama I was from. I had to tell her the truth that I was a local boy.
Hearing that so many people laughed and had a good time made all of the nervousness and feelings of barfitude prior to the show worth it.
I'm on Cloud 9. But I only got maybe 5 hours of sleep last night. There was an opening night party that we all attended and it went until midnight. Woops! I have to find the energy for tonight's show, but it'll come. It has to.
Anyway, thanks everyone for all of the words of encouragement. They mean a great deal to me.

A review came in this morning for the show.
'Duck Hunter' a good time, with a twist'
By Joseph T. Rozmiarek
Special to The Advertiser
"Duck Hunter Shoots Angel" doesn't walk the line between reality and sensational tabloid journalism, it tromps and dances across it, trailing bits from both worlds until it's hard to determine where that line might have been.
Take the half-man, half-alligator, for instance. He's a silent figure with a remarkably expressive papier maché crocodile grin that slips in and out of the action like an attentive butler, giving a shave or a back massage. Gator Man (Vincent Fitzgerald) is the physical manifestation of a story invented to sell newspapers at the supermarket checkout stand, but he's also an accepted part of the action.
While the audience is concentrating on realism, fantasy elements creep in at the edges, like the pair of duck hunters who believe they have shot down an angel because they keep finding pieces of her in a swamp.
They're a pair of good ol' country boys — Duane (pronounced do-wayne) and Duwell (do-well) — played by Jim Tharp and Braddoc DeCaires for all the broad laughs they can scoop up. Duwell is the gullible brother and the butt of Duane's sarcasm. "The wheels are turning," scoffs Duane as Duwell concentrates hard on collecting a thought, "But the hamster died."
With these two providing chorus, the job of creating melody goes to Scott Francis Russell as a New York reporter sent south to cover the angel story — or to invent it. Turns out he's packing his own history, revealed as the memory of the Woman (Chantelle Sawa) he loved and left behind.
Playwright Mitch Albom — whose "Tuesdays With Morrie" played successfully at MVT earlier this season — eventually pulls all the story threads together into a surprise ending. Along the way, he noticeably links dialogue by repeating the closing words of the ending scene in the first lines of the one that follows.
The action is tightly managed by director Paul Mitri and played out on Karen Archibald's realistic stage set filled with large swamp trees. But to see them, we spend the evening peering through a large scrim that is used only rarely for projections.
Some of the heartfelt emotion that is found so generously in "Tuesdays With Morrie" spills over into "Angel," primarily when the reporter retreats into memory from his everyday pose of hard-bitten cynicism. But the play exists primarily for laughs based on character idiosyncrasies and absurd exaggeration.
It's a good time capped by an unexpected switch.

Theology — and humor — with a 12-gauge
By Dave Dondoneau
TGIF Editor
There may be an underlying message in the name of the character Braddoc DeCaires plays in "Duck Hunter Shoots Angel," Manoa Valley Theatre's latest stage production, opening Thursday.
DeCaires plays Duwell (pronounced DO-well), one of two bumbling Alabama brothers who believe they shot a celestial being.
That neither Duwell nor brother Duwayne have ever shot anything before is part of the excitement. Both are unemployed and hunt daily, so when they see what they think is a duck dropping from the sky, they celebrate.
And when they see what they shot laying on the ground has a long robe, blonde hair and huge wings — they contemplate their fate and which shooter will be in trouble for bringing down the alleged angel.
Along the way they're joined by a cynical tabloid journalist and photographer who don't believe anything until feathers, wings and a tiara are discovered.
"There's a good vibe with this show," DeCaires said. "The cast is funny. My character, we think, may have a psychic connection with the angel, so maybe 'DOwell' is a tip on his character. It's all part of the story, which is very funny. My brother Duwayne (Jim Tharp) is a cross between Elmer Fudd and Dick Cheney."
"Duck Hunter Shoots Angel," is a play written by Mitch Albom, who also penned MVT's last production "Tuesdays with Morrie."
This one is much different. Instead of basically a two-man play like "Tuesdays," "Ducks" has eight characters. And while the "Tuesdays" set was basically a bed or chair, "Ducks" drops theater patrons into the Alabama backwoods and swamp.
It's a comedy with an underlying message.
"It makes you think and it makes you laugh," DeCaires said. "To me, everybody's idea of faith is different, just like your own fingerprint."
In real life, DeCaires said he doesn't know if he could ever hunt.
"The one time I thought about it, I was fly-fishing and a deer came into the stream, a 14- or 16-point buck that was huge," DeCaires said. "I remember looking at it and thinking 'I could never shoot something so beautiful.' "
Though Duwell and Duwayne shoot the angel (or was it?), Albom's play follows the cynical journalist (Sandy) as his beliefs are tested.
"All I can tell you is there is a resolution at the end if it really is an angel," DeCaires said. "But I don't want to give anything away. With this set and cast, you really get sucked in."

Manoa Theatre captures satirical 'Duck Hunter'
By John Berger
POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, May 18, 2009
The world of supermarket tabloids is a marvelous place where Elvis and Bigfoot shop at night at 7-Eleven, space aliens regularly make themselves known and mankind shares the planet with various "half-human, half-something else" creatures whose existence defies the laws of Mendelian genetics. Welcome to the world of "Duck Hunter Shoots Angel," Manoa Valley Theatre's Hawaii premiere production of Mitch Albom's tart and satirical yet surprisingly substantial send-up of "tabs" and those who write for them.
Albom combines predictable stereotypes -- the semiliterate malapropism-spouting Southerner first and foremost -- with a subtle but effective message about tolerance, not judging people by geographic origin. Jim Tharp (Duane) and Braddoc DeCaires (Duwell) star as bumbling brothers, allegedly the most inept duck hunters in Dixie, who nonetheless succeeded in shooting something they saw flying over the swamp. They believe it was an angel.
Word of the shooting reaches Lester, the shameless owner/publisher of the "Weekly World & Globe" in New York. Lester and his half-alligator factotum dispatch Sandy, a cynical, burned-out reporter who is both "anti-gun and anti-redneck," to rural Alabama with orders to buy exclusive rights to the hunters' story and fabricate the physical evidence needed to substantiate it if necessary.
(Sandy's back story: He left Alabama years before in search of wealth and fame in "legitimate" journalism. In doing so, he left an innocent woman behind. She had something she wanted to tell him. He was too busy to listen.)
Sandy goes south with Lenny, the paper's 300-pound photographer. They find Duane and Duwell in the swamp and gradually earn their trust. Then, inexplicable things start happening.
Tharp, a longtime star of the local stage, sacrificed his white hair and full white beard to play Duane; Greg Howell, MVT's hair and makeup master, took at least 20 years off Tharp's actual age. With a radical new look and a new spring in his step, Tharp sets aside his usual stage persona of the genial old codger and delivers a well-calibrated comic performance as a much younger man.
DeCaires makes a welcome return to the stage as Duwell. He is well cast opposite Tharp, and they swap one-liners with the precise timing of a veteran comic duo.
Gregory Scott Harris (Lenny), another actor who has been away from the stage too long, is a third key to the show's success. A "fat suit" gives Harris bulk for his role but doesn't slow the flow of his performance.
Karen Archibald's set places the swamp behind a scrim that allows it to disappear when cast members -- Harris, Scott Francis Russell (Sandy), Chantelle J.M. Sawa (Woman) and Vincent Fitzgerald (Gator Man) -- move to other locales. Katherine Clifton (Kansas) tends the counter at a convenience store on one end of the stage. Thomas L. McCurdy (Lester) directs the hunt for the angel-shooters from an office high on the other end.
Archibald's swamp, Janine Myers' angelic lighting effects and sound designer Jason Taglianetti's thunderstorms enhance the actors' work. Mark Archibald's video designs are particularly effective in creating the experience of driving down a rural Southern road at night. Video adds a sense of motion to what could otherwise be a long and static scene.

Right now, I'm just on a break for two days before the show starts up again. But I'm seriously depressed. Don't know what to do with myself when the high is gone. You know?
I don't know how I'll be on Monday... or even Sunday night for crying out loud. Ugh. When it's high, it's high. But when it's low (usually right after the big high) it's low low low.

Brad, you need to prepare yourself better for the post-show drop. Yes, it will happen. But since it's preordained, don't let it happen too strongly. You know it's based on a nearly-automatic reaction. Don't let that reaction rule you ... you must RULE IT. Minimize it, make fun of it, know that it's a temporary reaction and don't let it out of a small box of 4 days max duration and no more than 1 crying jagg and 4 frowns per day.

"Who Stole My Dead Husband?" closes on June 6th after a nearly three year run, and three years development in various forms before that. Most of the cast has been with the show the whole time. I've been for five years.
We may or may not re-mount the show in the fall. There may be a sequel in the works. In any case, a cast that has worked together for a long time will not be seeing each other every weekend. When asked how we can keep doing the show week after week, the invariable answer is that we love working with these people. It truly has become a family.
I've dealt with post-show depression before. This will be something entirely different.
It helps to have "Evita!" to look forward to this summer.

So, how's this for irony? Or maybe it's irony in a non-irony Alanis Morrissette "Ironic" sort of way...
I posted something on Twitter like "#prop8 we'll keep fighting, chin up, we won't stop until we achieve equality". So I get this response from this guy who says I'm stupid, there already is marriage equality for straights only and that's the way it should be etc. He tweets again saying I should try shock therapy. So, of course, I respond with some sort of snappy response. Then I click on his profile. Where is he from? Alabama. The play I'm in talks about not stereotyping people from Alabama and not discounting them by the way they look or sound. The play points out that lots of people in the south are open-minded, deep-thinking and pithy. So, how funny that I have some guy on Twitter proving us wrong? It's very funny.

Ufta!
We had a really good first rehearsal/read thru for the Drowsy Chaperone. It's a pretty small cast, maybe 14 of us total.
I have to say it was a little intimidating. A lot of big dogs in this show. Including one of the big theatre producers here taking the part of the Man in the Chair. One of the singers of the Hawaiian group Na Leo Pilimihana is going to be Trix the Aviatrix. One guy who is a big time opera singer here and an actress who is a big time singing coach here in HI is Adolpho and Drowsy. I must say, I feel like a newbie to this even though I'm not.
Well, they liked what I did with the character. I just gave it a stab and the director and producer liked it okay.
A lot of singing and dancing. We sang a lot tonight.
Oh, and did I mention I have to learn to tap dance for one of the numbers?

You know, without video, we'll have to believe anything. First you get to do the gangster voice on stage, now you get to tap dance, next it'll be a flying trapeze act or you'll wrestle a lion. Suuuure, Brad, whatever you say ;)

Well, the show I'm in right now opens today. I'm pretty stoked. The last two nights of previews rocked, so it kinda feels like we opened already.
To be honest, it's been quite an interesting ride. One of the more difficult plays that I have been in. The end result is so solid that it almost makes riding that bumpy road worth it.
I gotta say, tho, that last night's final notes session with our director played out a lot like Anne Baxter's "thank you" moments to Bette Davis, Celeste Holm etc at the end of All About Eve. If you've seen the movie, you know exactly what the cast's non-verbal responses were to a bunch of fatally phony compliments from someone who has been panned island-wide. (You can check it out here at about 9:12 or so (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97-clM-NNZQ&feature=PlayList&p=DE8DE46E94E7A98D&index=11).)

Oh Brad, it may not be Broadway, but L.A. has a thriving theater scene with a much more, shall we say, professionally hopeful pool of actors. I seriously feel it would behoove you to take this next step in your acting career and return to Los Angeles for the good of the nation, as well as yourself.
Dammit, I want to see one of your shows!!!!

I honestly don't have the thick skin that is necessary to perform in LA or NY. I've learned that. And that's okay.
:)
Here's a pic of me, the two gangsters and our Janet. Can I say that our cast has some really talented people in it. Our Janet is 15. 15 and has the presence of a pro onstage.

Well, ducklings, that's another show come and gone. The Drowsy Chaperone closed tonight. The big surprise of the evening was that Lisa Lambert came to see it. She wrote the lyrics for the show. She's a terrific person and a wonderful writer. She signed my program.
An awful rehearsal process evolved into an extraordinary run. I adored the cast and crew. I'll try and post some pics if I can.
Thanks to everyone at the LoT for all of your support and kind words. You are the blues chasers that help me get through. Mahalo.

I wish you could have too. I've been getting some great feedback about my character which is always nice to hear.
But now it's job hunting time. No plays for awhile, methinks. Although, I do have my sights set on Hair. (Auditions the week after I return from the SoCal trip.)

I haven't talked about it much lately but I'm auditioning for 'Hair' tonight.
A couple of things tho, I'm nervous about this audition which is usually a good thing for me. I can use that energy well. But for some reason, I have this pit of the stomach thing that says I don't think I'm going to get in. Don't know why...
I decided to go for the Margaret Mead ('My Conviction' song) character. It's a smaller part but a scene stealer. After the one scene she's in, she becomes a man again and turns into a Tribe member. I think that's good for me. Being one of the leads (Berger, Claude, Woof) means a lot of work. The show is already going to be a 7 week performance commitment, I'm supposed to be job hunting along with doing theatre stuff...

Speaking of that, one of the things that may hurt my chances in a small way is how I voiced my concern to the board at this theatre about their decision NOT to do the nudity. It truly is not in the script, but it is tradition. Another local theatre here did the nudity when the performed it in 1998. One of the board members asked me if it was truly vital to the story. I said: "Well not doing it would be like ending Act I of Phantom without a chandelier or just having Elphaba ride around on a unicycle during 'Defying Gravity'".

No, but I did tell them that I had no problem with being naked onstage. I am that committed to theatre.
:)
I heard an annoying story about an actress here who was cast as the lead in "White Christmas" (the play - it's playing now) and dropped out one week into rehearsals because she didn't want to kiss her costar onstage. She said it was against her religion. (She drops out despite her reading the script beforehand and the director asking her in the audition if she had a problem with it!) My response was 'If you want to be an actress you're going to have to kiss someone at some point. If you can't do that, then what else won't you do? And, do you really want to be an actress because you're going to have to take risks at times. If you can't, don't act.' At the very least, she should have told him this during the audition. What a dinglecheese.

So, for Margaret Mead, I'm in the process of campaigning that she dress exactly like Anne Bancroft from The Graduate. Leopard skin coat, the works. I'm even trying to get the hair and makeup guy to give me a wig that resembles her hair (streaks and all).
This is exciting. I hope I get it.
It is up to the director, tho.

It's a freakin' tragedy.
I found out last night that I am the oldest person in the cast.
AND I'm only a year younger than the director.
There are days where I do, 'WTF am I doing in this show?'
I'm thinking I'm not going to handle aging from here on out very well.

My wig is real human hair. Apparently, it was donated to the theatre awhile back. I hear it's a $400 wig! Yikes, I better not get it too tangled.
Not to be a diva or anything but the costumer's take on Margaret Mead is all wrong. She made her frumpy. I don't agree. I'm going to have to convince the director to take her in a different direction. We'll see.
