Beginning Quilting Class - Schedule and Supply List

First Sewing Session: Sunday, May 10, 10:00 am

We will be making a baby-sized Yellow Brick Road quilt.

For those of you that missed the first class, these are the supplies you will need for the first sewing session (this Sunday):


6 Fat Quarters of high quality, quilt grade 100% cotton (a fat quarter is 18"x22" You should have 2 Darks, 2 Mediums and 2 Lights and they should be high contrast.
Fabric Snips/Thread Cutter
Rotary Cutter (Olfa is preferable)
Self Healing Mat (larger is better)
Glass Headed Quilting Pins
Measuring Tape
Quilting Ruler (18" x 6")
Sewing Machine
1/4 " Foot for sewing machine
Neutral shade of cotton thread
2 bobbins wound with thread
Note Paper
Pen
Highlighter
Digital Camera
$7.50 for patternFor future classes:

Flannel-backed vinyl tablecloth
Chalk marker
3 yards of backing material
1 3/8 yards material for bindingIf you can't find one (or several) of these items, don't let that stop you from attending the class. We will have enough to share. We also can arrange to have a loner sewing machine available if you need one.

If you have any questions please give Susan a call (not expert questions cn be addressed to me).

I'll have some snackies and fuzzy water available as well as coffee. If you want to bring anything to share, feel free to do so. Also, remember to take your allergy medicine before entering the cat zone.

Well, that was a very fun day! We accomplished a surprising amount (some more than others). I think we will be near completion of the quilt top by the end of next class.

Of course, as soon as everyone left, I broke a needle. :rolleyes:

My back was killing me by the time I got home and I was working on a good wheeze, but I had a blast. I was thinking about my quilt and sewing machine the rest of the night and into this morning...I think that means I have a new hobby. Oh noes!

Yesterday I was showing my dad my quilt blocks and telling him how I made them. His mom used to make quilts all the time but with whatever fabric was around, scraps and worn-out clothes. She made a quilt entirely out of old neckties once. Unfortunately that one's no longer around (I never saw it).

Anyway my dad was a little amazed at the decadence of actually purchasing new fabric to make a quilt.

Remind me to put out my Gee's Bend book for the next class. Amazing quilts done out of recycled fabric.

I actually had the notion that I was going to go thrifting for old printed 1960's and 70's sheets and do a project using them. As it is, I already bought some fabric for my next project. I'm loving it!

For the next class, everyone will need to have border fabric as well as binding fabric. The class after that, we will need batting as well as backing fabric.

Reminder: The next class is THIS SUNDAY 10:00 am, my house. You will need your finished quilt blocks, your border fabric and binding fabric. We will also be practicing machine quilting, so if you have any leftover fabric you don't plan on using for anything else, bring that along. I have some batting and some muslin to use as well.

The International Quilt Festival in Long Beach will be held July 24th - 26th. I went last year and it was AMAZING! Not only are their incredible finished quilts, but there is a whole hall of marketplace stuff like fabric, craft supplies, expensive sewing machines, and FABRIC! Yup, we're still on. Which means I need to do some cleaning today. I've been a sick puppy since I got home from Chicago and everything is in disarray. I'm looking forward to having some creative time.

Learned some great stuff today, I just wish I could jump right in and practice more. But my sewing machine is not quite properly equipped.

"The darning foot is an optional accessory not included with your machine." But they did give me a darning plate.
"The quilting foot is an optional accessory not included with your machine." But they did include a seam guide and then not explain how to use it.

I stopped at SewVac tonight armed with the model number of my machine which it turns out didn't help at all. They helped me guess what I needed (with the assurance I could bring it back) and I left with a walking foot. It doesn't fit (it's too tall for the clampy thing to fit around the screwy thing) but after spending the last hour on the web I know all about different kinds of walking feet and all sorts of sewing machine parts websites. I'll take it back on Wednesday and bring along the shank from my machine so they can see if they actually have what I need. Otherwise I can order from Singer's website and get the specific parts for my machine.

At the moment I'm feeling some trepidation about working with the quilt top I've created which suddenly seems enormous. Maybe I could handle quilting a coaster or two instead.

Well, at least you were told you did a good job! Me, on the other hand, not my skill obviously. Maybe I'll just get some yarn and do those little tie thingies and call it a "blanket" instead. ;)

All my grandmother's quilts were tied so don't knock it. I need to give it more of a chance of course but I do think I enjoy the piecing part of the process the most. But that's because I love starting stuff that I never finish.

Those of you who can't get the parts for or who don't like the idea of quilting by machine can buy a needle and a frame. It'll take you longer, but you can do it in a comfy chair while watching movies!

Now, just don't ask me if I ever finished the quilt I pieced by hand. ;)

OH! a cheap vinyl table cloth with a flannel back is a great place to lay out your blocks when you are trying to arrange them in the best placement. This was important with the Yellow Brick Road pattern we used. The blocks will stick to the flannel and, if you need to come back to the project later, you just fold up the table cloth and you don't lose your layout.

I think I'm going to pull out the tablecloth again when I layer the top with the batting and the backing.

Amy and I are both having issues with the quilt run days. I don't think she can go at all this weekend due to mid-day walks. Next Sunday I have a client Garden Party at 4 that I need to attend for work.

Why are we both working on Sundays?

Teresa, Amy and I can't go on Sunday so we're going to do the quilt run on the 19th. We're off this week so you all have time to practice quilting (says the woman who sucks at it).

I can't do the 19th because I'm driving out to Palm Springs that day. No worries, I'll catch the quilt run next year. And I'm really happy to have a (sort of) free day this Sunday. I have a ton of things to get done in the next week and on top of that I've decided I need completely different backing fabric for my quilt.

I did the San Diego portion of the run with Susan and Jan on Friday. It was a blast, but very exhausting. (Then again, I was driving.) We hit 10 of the 12 stores - we hope to catch the Temecula ones this Thursday when we do Palm Desert/Riverside.

We got some neat little free patterns and trinkets. I also bought some awesome Hollywood-themed fabric for a future project for my office. :)

This is the result of my first original design attempt:

I have some film/Hollywood themed fabric, hence the "film strip" blocks that frame it. The alternating "frames" in the strip blocks are white and red printed fabrics with little film motifs (popcorn, reels, cameras, clapboards, etc.) The gray inner border is a film strip fabric. And, the large black areas surrounding the center star will be appliqued with some larger Hollywood elements. :)

And, yes, the math is already done - it's 50" x 60" (10-inch outer blocks). All of the figures are handwritten on my printout. :) It's small, but I'm intending it as a wall-hanging for in front of my production closet.

Here are pics of my thermal quilted drink wrap that I made last weekend. The concept is common, but this design is my original, and I made my own template by wrapping a cup and drawing the pattern, then transferring it to cardstock:

It's fully adjustable from 16-48 oz. cups. I added the little vinyl pockets to hold photos, drink recipes, or even a name.

Future ones will have a regular fabric cord with sliding stop closure - much faster than tying it each time. And, the button will be matched to the fabric design.

The Quilt Show was wonderful! I was very good and didn't spend as much money as I thought I would (thank god!) but I did get inspired to get some of my projects going again.

I wish it would cool off. I want to finish my quilt! I wonder of Bears is air conditioned?

It's too hot to do anything! I'm really glad I bought some more wool roving because I'm really in the mood to do needle felting right now. Maybe if I go sit in the refrigerator.
