Today at Albertson's I saw that.....

Mother's Cookies are back!!

At least the display had a few of them, namely the animal cookies.

I bought some of the frosted oatmeal and the animal cookies. I was not impressed. You are not alone in your disappointment.

I still have some of the old original ones in my freezer (they still have not expired). I'll have to get some of the new ones to compare.

My understanding was they used the same recipes and the same manufacturing plant, run by the same people. Unless something changed I'd have thought they would taste the same.

Otherwise, this would conclude to revise a new meaning to the term

I tried ours ... they say Nabisco Classic but they LOOK like Mothers...they were ok but didn't seem to be as good as the original :(

We bought the animal cookies a couple of weeks ago and they are different.

The problem lies in the base cookie. I think it was Ms. T that figured it out...but they now seem to use animal cracker cookies (like the circus box ones) and simply frost them like the old Mother's circus animal cookies.

The kids liked them and I guess they were fine, but they aren't Mother's. :(

Ok, I did a side-by-side comparison of the animal cookies.

First off, the ingredient listing is different. If it's the same recipe, then why is the ingredient listing different? It seems the ingredients are the same, just in a different order which may mean different amounts of the ingredients, or not. The nutritional information is the same, so there can't be too much difference in amounts of fat or sugar.

As far as taste, at first bite I thought it was the same. But after a few I started to notice a suttle difference. The cookie was crispy, I had no issue with that. But there was a difference that seemed like the original was buttery or creamy. The new ones more dry and shortening- like. They contain Hydrogenated Palm oil so they may have changed the amount or even the supplier. It would make since they would change ingredients to the ones they already work with rather than those Mother's works with. It's also interesting that they contain Hydrogenated Palm oil because it was the second ingredient in the listing , but there was a "no trans fat" lable on the front which is missing from the new package, and it's been lowered in the new listing.

So, there is a difference, but to my taste it's small enough to be acceptible.

o-Kay, I bought a bag of the Nabisco Classics, they looked good, and taste nothing like Mothers Cookies. :( So, Nabisco performed some kind of cookie chicanery on the unsuspecting Mothers Cookie lovers of the world.

I checked online and saw that it was Kelloggs (not Nabisco) who bought the Mothers recipes and brands. Kelloggs is supposed to bring back Mothers cookies sometime in 2009. I sent them a message and asked about it, no idea if they will respond or not.

You damn Nabisco Elves know right where you can stick these not really Mothers Circus Animal Cookies. Bastards.

So further searching tells me that Kelloggs is making them (http://www.motherscookies.com/SpecialOffers.aspx). There is a coupon, but these were not in the local Safeway in FiDi, only the crappy Nabisco Imposters I spent hard earned $$ on. Now to find the real deal and taste test them.

When I saw (and bought) the frosted animal cookies, it was the Nabisco brand. They were not good, neither were the iced oatmeal. I bought a bag of Mother's brand animal cookies and those were pretty darn close to the original and not a disappointment at all.

I think the cookie is a little bit crispier than the originals, but in a good way. More importantly, they got the vital frosting:cookie ration correct, and the frosting tastes right.

Finally bought a bag. They are perfect!!!!! I didnt eat them often enough to notice any changes and they taste the same to me.

I haven't seen flaky flix or sugar wafers (by Mother's) though :(
