Not showing on the USGS map yet

ETA: Oh, c'mon: the initial is only a 4.7 1 mi E of Lennox (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Quakes/quakes_big.php). It was bigger than that!

ETAA: we're up to a 5.0

Well, I have a lot of stuff that rattles, and I had time to walk around and it went on and on at a pretty tremendous thrum rate.

It wasn't violent here, but we felt it for sure. A good 30-40 seconds of motion (maybe more, I'm knocking about 20 seconds off as my own quivering after the shaking had stopped).

Lisa's checked in, not happy that this happened while Chris is out of town, but otherwise ok.

I hate hate HATE living by myself right about now.

I also have no idea why, but this one is freaking me out more than normal. You can all laugh at me but I pulled my car out of the garage and grabbed emergency supplies (I just took apart my "kit" since it was so old so I have nothing 'ready').

Felt it just fine in Dana Point. Enough shaking to get us headed for the door. Then again, we are on the second story.

omg

Can my heart stop beating so fast now?

I'm fine. Stuff got knocked down but everyone is good. Thurston is freaked out a bit but the cats are so over it. Rupert was on my shoulder so I have some nice claw marks in my back.

It was NOT rolling here and it lasted quite a while. It was a definite shaker and a noisy one at that. The worst part for me is that Chris is in Chicago. He hasn't gotten my texts as of yet. I would REALLY like to touch base with him.

I've been through quite a few and this one was worse for me than Whittier. I am also MUCH closer to the epicenter than that one. At least I wasn't on the toilet for this one. ;)

My cousin (who's never lived outside of Vegas) just noted on my Facebook that it's "tough to know you'll see a 7.0 someday". I replied, "So will the unsuspecting tourists who happen to be here at the same time."

I love how some people who don't live here pick on us for living in a quake zone, yet they must honestly think it won't happen when they come here on vacation. At least we'll know what to do.

Considering LA is a top tourist destination, it is likely that there will be quite a few people who feel an earthquake while visiting.

It would sure suck if Orlando had a 7.0 when you were there. Actually it would suck if Orlando had a 7.0 at any time. I don't think they're nearly as prepared for it as we are. Not that I want one here.

It's a bit weird how we've had such a cluster of them the last few months. I suppose that's a good thing, relieve a little pressure rather than building up. But there have been quite a few, haven't there?

Ghoulish Delight
05-18-2009, 10:52 AM
There have been more than there have been in a while, but it's far from "weird". We live on top of several of the most active faults in the world, this is entirely within the realm of "expected".

It's a myth (http://www.consrv.ca.gov/index/Earthquakes/Pages/qh_earthquakes_myths.aspx) that small quakes prevent large ones.

The Mtyh: "Small earthquakes keep big ones from happening". Each magnitude level represents about 30 times more energy released. It takes 30 magnitude 3s to equal the energy released in a magnitude 4, 900 magnitude 3s to equal a magnitude 5 … and 729 billion magnitude 3s to equal a single magnitude 9. So while a small quake may temporarily ease stress on a fault line, it does not prevent a large temblor.

;) :DWell, you did have a fore-shock: 3.1 magnitude, 5 mi WNW of Kalaoa, HI (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Maps/HI2/19.21.-157.-155.php), about an hour-and-a-half before ours.

Out in the Valley, the extreme West side of our eating-place felt it, but the East did not.

I felt a rumbling in my feet...sustained -- and it was a weird insistent vibration...and I looked around but only a guy sitting near me also noticed. We caught each other's eyes and knew. Everyone else teased us.

My hubby, about a foot and 1/2 away felt nothing. Me and the other guy who felt it were convinced it was a quake, but all the other patrons said "truck."

Oh, I was barefoot, but the other guy was not. I'm going to go barefoot more often.:) I like having my flesh pressed against my planet.

It was fun!

Of course, the cats do not agree. Sasha was okay after the first one, but Boris was just starting to come out from under the bed again and actually slept with us this morning - then came today. Now I'm pretty sure neither of them is ever coming out from under the bed.

So, ya didn't feel it in GG?

We are heading up this weekend. Usually, there is some sort of quake right after we leave, I mean, like, while we are driving home or literally when we must have just gotten on the freeway. {seriously, after each visit we've had recently}

Are we tempting fate?

We'll be up Fri/Sat. Not at the park. Darn it, so cal blacked out Friday. :0(

My mom was here for this one. My hubby says to her "this might be your first earthquake". She runs into the living room, where a floor lamp is swaying, wide-eyed. I look, and note that wow, yes, the lamp is swaying, this probably is an earthquake.

Mom decided this "wasn't too bad". And it wasn't. Here. We spent the next half hour looking at the USGS earthquake site.
