Farrell's Ice Cream is back! Opening Fall of 09 in the Mission Viejo mall.
Linky (http://www.simon.com/mall/tenant_details.aspx?ID=239&TID=68080).
If you're yearning for a nostalgic place to gather and celebrate the old-fashioned way or just to enjoy a fun atmosphere, we invite you to experience the heart and soul of the original Farrell’s with some modern twists.
You will enjoy the Farrell's nostalgic candy store featuring candies of the past, a ragtime player piano, bistro-style menu items like wood stone pizzas, fresh salads, sandwiches and burgers. And of course the Farrell's Ice Cream dishes you all loved as kids like the Pig's Trough, The Zoo, Gibson Girl, Black and White, and Nutty Nutty. We even will offer healthy options such as "no sugar added" and frozen yogurts.

I can personally verify the one in Santa Clarita does. That's such an intrinsic part of what makes Farrell's Farrell's, I can only assume they're in their right minds and make it so.

Nothing says "useless website" more than a website that doesn't list your product range.
I guess they sell "icecream". No need for me to actually SEE their range other than a couple of tiny incidental pictures, or god forbid, a menu and price-list.

I've been to that one. Sad, pitiful excuse for the Fabulous Fun that used to be Farrell's.
Oh, and Mountasia "Fun Center" is home to the worst miniature golf course in the world.
Hope the new Farrell's is up to the old standards. Seems every few years there's a Farrell's rumor that ends up falling through.

Do they still have the Pig trough? It's a Sunday served in a trough and you get a ribbon that says "I made a pig of myself at Farrell's" if you eat the whole thing....

Errr, ummm well yeah I suppose if anyone ever really did that... Not that I can think of anyone that did that. In their youth, on their birthday. Once or twice. And I would argue that it was the licorice rope consumed after the trough, or perhaps the four rock candy sticks that was the real culprit.

Farrell's used to give me anxiety as a kid. The pounding on that bass drum, the sirens going off without warning. Freaky happy people in straw hats... Gives a kid a heart attack, I tells ya...

You were one of those "delicate" children, weren't you.
At our Farrell's, if you finished the Pig Trough, they made you stand up on your chair and had the entire restaurant yell, "soo-EE, soo-EE, PIG PIG PIG," then slapped a blue ribbon on you that said, "I made a pig of myself at Farrell's." I liked Farrell's.

I want 'em small, so I can have a couple different flavors. I'm not at all worried about the "sin" of a big sundae, but it will make me (physically) feel crappy, so I'd just rather not push it over that edge, but still enjoy myself. :)
I've learned that if something makes me ill, it's best to not do it. ;)

Seriously, I need to open a gourmet icecream parlour over here, and call those "Degustation Scoops" (as opposed to Disgustation Scoops)
Imagine a gourmet range with tiny little scoops, about 8 to a standard scoop. They could be piled up in a little pyramid in a waffle coupe.
Gourmet Flavours like sea-salt, burnt butter creme brulee, wasabi, avocado & lime, peach with raspberry brittle, Avocaat etc.
I could call it "Chills Downunder"

and... to avoid the seasonal problems of running an ice-cream store in Winter, I'd offer "Hot Icecream".
This would be trays of thick fudge brownie hot out of the oven, out of which I'd scoop little ball scoops and pile them up as before, topped with hot toppings. Fudge flavours would be like: Passionfruit and Galliano, Peppermint Choc, White Choc Marscapone, Almond & Cherry, Cafe Macchiato etc. Not hard to do if you base half the mix with regular chocolate, and half with white chocolate. then add the different flavourings for variety. Toppings would be Drambuie Cream, zabaglione, hot pureed fruits, various Monin syrups, etc.
I could even develop a range of savoury ice-creams, to be served in ThinKrisp Coupes... what do you think? How about Pear with blue cheese and balsamic? or cheddar with cayenne?
Gosh. I might even keep this as a real idea. It's might be crazy enough to work. OK you guys, please note that I hold copyright on this idea. No pinching. :D

I'm happy that there is no Farrell's near me to tempt me. I have a difficult enough time with temptation as it is. This is one reason why I am thanking God I am nowhere near Lashbear right now. That sounds too too divine and far to sinful. Otherwise, I'd love to come visit the Lashpair!

I regularly visited Farrell's when I was a kid. And, in fact, had a favorite menu item, known then as a "clown sundae." It was basically an upside-down ice cream cone, served in a dish with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and a face made of cherries on the ice cream. Loved those damn things.
Of course, that was the first item I looked for on the new menu, and much to my disappointment, it doesn't appear to have been revived. Not that I really needed to eat one, but I was still hoping it would be there.
Still, I'll probably make a visit to the Mission Viejo location one of these days for a nice stroll down memory lane.

We keep meaning to have a Scoops (http://www.yelp.com/biz/scoops-los-angeles) tasting party.
I, too, prefer a small dose of ice cream, and I like variety. The idea would be to get a small carton of eight flavors or so, and use one of those melon ballers to give everyone just a taste of each of their wild gourmet flavors. Flavor adventure AND moderation! Beautiful thing.
