View Full Version : A picture is worth 140 characters

A guy has developed a file encoding method, using Chinese characters for some nitty gritty technical reasons, that allows him to encode an image into 140 characters, thus making it tweetable.
Obviously a lot of data is lost in such an encoding, but for a first stab the results are pretty cool. Here's how the 140 character encoding of a photo of the Mona Lisa looks when translated back into an image file:

I still think I'd rather have my nuts shaved by a lawnmower than participate in anything twitter-related.
But I digress...

Neat-o, can't wait to see other masterpieces done like this.

Golly, and here I thought all of those times I laughed at something I read or wrote on twitter were real, and all the things my friends communicated to me over it actually imparted information to me. And the poor deluded soul I linked to in the OP actually thinks he's doing something fun and creative by taking on a difficult mental challenge. That dumb fvck, doesn't he know he shouldn't have even tried?!
Hey, here's an idea. If the topic of a thread doesn't interest you...don't fvcking post in it.

I believe the "isn't worth trying" was related to the scrotum vs. lawnmower comment, GD

I took it that way as well.

I believe the "isn't worth trying" was related to the scrotum vs. lawnmower comment, GDOkay, you're probably right about that.
But I'm still miffed that this thread was insta-derailed, so my last statement stands.

In the spirit of the topic, and just to annoy Chernabog, I think it would make for a fun experiment if everyone limited the length of their posts to 140 charact

*Derail Fairy Strikes Again!* ;)Next time you start a thread about something you like, I'm going to post "This topic sucks. I'd rather get my snatch shaved by a lawnmower than discuss it."
I suspect Chernabog's next thread is going to be about how he likes shaving snatches with a lawnmower.

Please don't be too miffed. I just hate twitter in general, but I think the twitter-picture thing is actually kinda geeky-fun. Also we got your wife to talk about shaving her snatch, which should be equally as fun. Let's get back on topic, m'kay?
But I'm still miffed that this thread was insta-derailed, so my last statement stands.
I always thought this group was at their best when a thread derailed. Besides, it is not like you painted that picture, old sport. Let it roll, says I.
But perhaps I am out of line.

Hmmmm I missed this quote. Please chill out. Everyone on this board posts random comments in threads and topics that do not interest them. It's called "goofing off" and "having fun", which is about 95% of this board. I made a silly comment which was similar to every type of comment I've made in the past at some point during a thread which had to do with twitter. Everyone who knows me knows I make random inappropriate comments all the time to joke around (and you've known me for many years).
I'll chalk this up to a bad day, and move on. :tiki:

I'm not apologizing for my post. And I don't have to chill out.
Alex referenced my thread about free ice cream where it was instantly, "I don't give a sh*t about the topic you posted."
There was CP's poem that went instantly to, "Your title is the same as the title of something else that has nothing to do with the topic you posted."
Then this, where it couldn't go one post without someone just using it as a forum to bitch about something that no one asked about, instantly turning into a thread that has nothing to do with the topic posted.
It just seems like it's been happening more often and I find it obnoxious. This isn't a case of a thread going off on a tangent. I tangent all the time, it's fun, it's funny, we all love it. But fvck, I wouldn't go into a thread about someone who creates art based on Bjork just to say, "I'd rather mutilate myself than listen to Bjork's music." I don't see someone start a sewing thread and go in so I can post, "Sewing's boring and lame" as the first response. WTF is that point of that? If it doesn't interest me I don't post.
Meanwhile I get sh*t for talking about tea in a 5 page long thread that's rambled about every other topic under the sun, but someone hijacks my thread before a single other response and I'm told to chill. Nice.

I've written a post on this and deleted it several times as you posted that and others responded... and well, GD, your response was just WOW! I sense your frustration and all that but your response was really quite hostile. I know we derail threads left and right around here - but it's always seemed like we're all just friends chatting then any rigid structure.
I am sorry that your feelings were hurt though.
I suppose you could have had his derail deleted. Or you could have posted a smart alecky response about derailing threads that didn't come off as hostile sounding.
I know you're not a jerk or something - but your response was well - rather jerky.
Feel free to derail my threads/posts all you like though. I'll tell you fvck off when you do and it'll be lots of fun. :D

Really? GD you really want to battle over something as completely stupid as this? I don't think you and I have ever had an argument in our lives, ever, and you want to start with this?
Sorry man, but I've kept my side of the street clean on this one. If you're going to pull a Nephy (which, by the way, even Nephy isn't pulling any more) and construe every comment in the absolute worst way possible, then that's your right, I suppose. I think your only problem was just that it was the very first post, and not a post halfway down the line. Frankly, with the Bjork comment in your example, I'm used to hearing stuff like that. I don't really care. I don't take it personally, and neither should you. If I REALLY wanted to get a conversation back on track, I suppose I'd make a comment about "hey guys, let's get back on track" rather than going on some jerky rant about the de-railer.
There must be something else going on with you that has nothing to do with LoT.
It was just a silly comment that popped into my head when I read the original post. End of story, peace out.

I chalk it up to not planning a Swank Camp this year. So, the drama's gotta come out elsewhere. ;)
:p
And, Cherny, for the record, I like Bjork. It's my favorite phrase by the Swedish Chef. ;)

Soooo... *whistles*
I think the picture thing is cool, and would love to find out that there's a way to do that with pictures, like toss it into the picturetweeterconverter thing. Unless I missed it, and there's already one out there.

I'll admit that my mis-read of Leo's post put me in a fouler mood than was warranted, and for that I apologize. I'm just disappointed with how often this, in my perception, has been happening on LoT. It's the kind of thing that has always lead me to get annoyed at message boards and had been one of the many things LoT had over the rest of the interwebs.
As I said, this has been a cumulative thing of late. No, this one thread is no big deal, and I'm sorry the frustration came out directed at you, Cherny.
