I can't write a story for you my long lost relative, but I'm sure we've got some other creative writers among us who can do you justice. Happy Birthday!

As she trod down the garden path, she came to a small gate, behind which was a most extraordinary display. "Curiouser and curiouser," she thought. "Well hello, my dear!" an enthusiastic little man in an overly-large topper shouted across the table (which was most shockingly LITTERED with dirty teacups!) "Is it YOUR unbirthday too?"

"Unbirthday?!?" exclaimed the March Hare. He began to launch into song. "A......very merry unbirthday to you!"

-"It's not my UN-birthday!" she corrected them. "Why it is, in fact, my actual birthday today!"

"Oh, well, that's different then," the little man sniffed, as he went back to pouring his tea. "Perhaps Miss Whoever-She-Is would like to join us in celebrating OUR unbirthdays," he said to no one in particular, but perhaps to the March Hare.

Being careful to shut the garden gate behind her, she joined them at the table. "I should be delighted. And my name... is Helen."

...and here's your torrid birthday prose:

His eyes slid down the front of her dress...
"Do you mind?" Helen exclaimed, "I've just had this dress drycleaned."
In reply, he rolled his eyes at her. She picked them up and rolled them back.

"Where are the cupcakes?" She didn't sound happy.

She asked him again, "Where are the cupcakes I bought for my birthday party? There were a hundred cupcakes here, and now there are only six, what happened?"

He came in from the other room, "Well, there was this brownie troop..."

"A brownie troop?"

"Well, maybe it was a platoon, I don't know what brownies come in."

"So this brownie 'platoon' has what, exactly, to do with my cupcakes?"

"Well, they were dropping off flyers - "

"Yes, I see the flyer, 'Fourth of July Brownie Jamberoo and Cake Walk Fundraiser.'"

" - And taking donations. Of cake."

"So, you gave them my cupcakes."

"No, I gave them that fruitcake leftover from Christmas!"

"Uh-huh, so, what happened to the cupcakes?"

"It was one of the little girl's birthday, I figured we could pick up some more before your party."

"Well, how many of the little locusts were there?"

"Thirty."

"So, out of a hundred cupcakes, you're telling me thirty ate ninety-four?"

"Yeah, they seemed hungry."

"Well, great. Before I leave for the store, and you ARE paying half, what was the darling birthday glutton's name?"

"Helen, she said."

"Package," said the UPS delivery man. He strode in carrying a large brown box. She signed for it. Without looking up, he asked "last name please."

"3894" came the answer. He looked up for a moment, thought about asking a question, then thought better of it and left.

She was puzzled. Who would have remembered? As she read the label a grin warmed her face. "It's from the LoT!"

A moment later she had torn through the tape and protective packaging. "What could it be.....ah, a beagle picture frame, so cute...a lovely journal...and ooh, some new yarn! I needed this color. One more thing...oh. It's...it's a book on bacon themed knits. Right. Well, aren't they the thoughful bunch."

Happy Birthday, Helen. (Hey, I bought the journal.)

He worked through the morass of beagles and children, wondering where the journey would take him. As the light of day faded, the world seemed to be coming more alive. He caught her out of the corner of his eye. He know today was the day, that one magical day every year where life seemed just a little better. Gently, he leaned toward her and gently whispered, "happy birthday 3894...

"... or Helen."

Merci beaucoup, all! I was eating my way through France, in the company of the hubbo and Daughter #1.

A few photos, perhaps? Here's my daughter hunting truffles in the Dordogne with the truffle master Monsieur Edouard and his dog Ti-Tuffe. Ti-Tuffe smells them in the ground (they smell like beets) and scratches at the ground. Then you take over with a little pick: http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e192/Helen_3894/France2009018.jpg After, we ate the truffle shaved over some ravioli.

And here's me and the offspring in le Jardin de Luxembourg, Paris. I'm the one with the gray hair. http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e192/Helen_3894/France2009002.jpg

I think the Luxembourg Gardens are my favorite public park.

Between you, me and la poste de lumiere, I think truffles are overrated as a delicacy, but a truffle hunt sounds like lots of fun.

Cool pictures.

Luxembourg Gardens, love that place!

It's your birthday, but you gave US the gift of a photo! Nice to see ya, Helen!

Glad you had such a fun birthday.
