I'll start !!

My iPhone 3G today just stopped seeing any wireless networks: mine or my neighbour's.

The iPhone forums are full of similar stories, so this looks like a common problem, but no foolproof one-for-all solution comes to the fore ?!?!

I have gone to settings, general, reset, and reset the network settings, but that hasn't helped. I can't tell it to forget the network, as it can't even SEE it. I tried a soft boot, I tried a hard boot, I tried a Doc Martin Boot (OK not really) but nothing seems to work. I turned the Plane Mode on and off again, I turned Wireless on and off again. I pulled a little tiny bit of my [rapidly greying] hair out again. Just a little. And only the grey ones.

My iTunes has just informed me that there is a software update from 3.0 to 3.0.1 I am now downloading and installing this.

Fingers crossed, kiddies !!! I NEED my wireless access. Several apps won't even wake up without it. And I'd have to tweet from my Laptop !! :rolleyes:

Edited To Add: Oh GOD !!! It won't install the new software without backing the whole phone up even though I synced the phone just before downloading the latest software - Backup takes Mega-Hours for some reason. I give up. I'm going to bed (without an alarm clock cos I use my phone now and got rid of the old one)

The latest update is to counteract the SMS attack vulnerability. Sorry you're having issues with wifi. That does sound very strange and frustrating. Have you tried to restore it using the Restore feature in iTunes?

Backup and restore. I've never had this problem - or any problem with my phone, but I don't use WiFi much.

I had some trouble loading the software update from my PC laptop. But when I did it from my Mac work computer it was fine. Other than that, I haven't had many issues with my iPhone.

I have an iphone question. I don't have one but a co-worker does. We just put wifi in the office so he can use it but it's password protected. So I need to do something in his phone so he can use the wifi right? I don't have an iphone so no idea how the wifi works.

He'll just need to enter the password on his iPhone to connect to the network.

Go to
Settings
Wi-Fi
Hit the "off" switch to turn on
Choose a newwork (a list should come up)
Choose your network
Enter password

I would not keep the Wi-Fi on all of the time. It is a big battery drainer and it is rarely a necessity (and sometimes it gets in the way of a good Edge or 3G connection).

I kinda thought Edge and 3G were types of WiFi. Um, oh, lordy I'm gonna need some serious iPhone help if and when i take ze plunge.

Also, Gemini Cricket's problems downloading software updates from a PC alarm me. I don't have a Mac that seems to have suspiciously worked fine with an iPhone where the PC would not.

The simplest way I can explain it is like this:

Edge and 3G are types of cell data networks. So you can access the internet from an iPhone (or other type of smart phone) just on the go.

Wifi is the connection that wireless computers/laptops use.

The iPhone can connect to a wireless network, like at a Starbucks, airports or home if available. When it connects to the wireless network it can do internet things faster (I think).

When it connects to the wireless network it can do internet things faster (I think).

That's been my experience.

I rarely turn on 3G unless I'm travelling and require web distraction. There are so many ways to connect to data services, it makes sense to turn off what you're not using to save your battery charge. I forward my cell calls to the office phone during working hours, turn on airplane mode and I can usually get around 4-5 days on a battery charge. With all connections turned on, I'm doing good to make it into the second day.

Awake now (have been for an hour or so.)

Phone has been backed up and the new software installed, but no wireless yet. Still won't view any.

At least if I have to get a replacement I've got a recent backup.

Taking it to the Optus (my carrier) Shop now. I pay the premium business insurance on it, so they should replace it.

Well, I can lose my phone for two weeks, while it's repaired under warranty, or if I take it directly to the Apple Store in Sydney CBD they will probably swap it out for me on the spot.

Guess where I'm going tomorrow ?

So I'm reading the 213-page User Guide for my new iPhone. It seems to me the thing in my hand is more powerful and functional than the spacecraft that traveled to the moon.

And yet ... I cannot download my own ringtones to the device who's central function is, by virtue of its name, a [/i]phone[/i]. This is not a technical limitation of course, but a copyright issue, I suppose. Yet I cannot tell you how annoyed I am that I can practically perform heart surgery with this thing, yet I cannot use my custom ringtones (most of which, by the way, cannot be purchased on iTunes - which is the only authorized way to add a ringtone to the iPhone). Bah.


From what I understand, the iPhone uses an odd sound format for its ringtones. Does anyone know of a hack that will allow me to get from a standard sound format to their weird sound format and upload it to the iPhone as a ringtone?

In return, I will gladly remove your gallbladder with my iPhone when you need that procedure performed.

If you have an MP3 of the song you want (or even ringtone in mp3 format), you can do it with iTunes.

There's a great Mac application called Fission. It's a really simple audio editing program - lets you edit mp3s without changing format, for example. It also lets you save any part of any audio file as an iPhone ringtone.
