Did you see this article? (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090918/sports/crime_hockey_assault)
MONTREAL - A judge sent a message to hockey players across the country Friday that there are legal consequences for on-ice behaviour, and limits to the kind of thuggery that can be justified by the game's unwritten code of conduct.

I agree.
Cross checking isn't allowed to begin with. Bertuzzi ruined Steve Moore's career with his actions. While this article focused on the junior hockey league the NHL is cracking down on fighting too.
There is a huge difference between a 'hockey fight' where you have two people agreeing to "go" and assault.

I know this is a derail... but when I read the thread title, I wondered, "Why does M care about David Hockney donating three paintings to the Tate Modern (http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/local/localbrad/4637005.Artist_gives_three_works_to_museum/)?"

And that's a completely logical thing to wonder.
