As some people know I am part of a group that will be singing at the Colorado Renaissance Festival.

There is a song in our sets called "heiland laddie" and we need to come up with some more verses- so here is where you come in-

Here are a couple of examples:

Were you ever in Quebec
Stowin' timber on the deck?
where ye'd break yer bleedin' neck
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

Were you ever off the Horn
Where it's always fine and warm?
Where's there's a lion and a unicorn
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

So it names a place, and then goes from there.....

Think renn faire, drinking, wenchs and knights, kings and dragons, bawdy and lusty and lots of fun.

Can you help me? Even just some ideas- I can help with the cadence of the verse once it gets going!

please please please????????

Always one to respond to a poetry challenge. You may only want to use some of these...

were you ever in st. ives
where a bonny laddy strives
to save gentle maidens' lives

were you ever in brisbane
building castles in the rain
like a carpenter done 'can'

were you ever in county-clare
sewing seeds 'round everywhere
in the clear delicious air

were you ever in burbank
in a day job at think tank
as your dreams just up and sank?

were you ever in irvine
thinking money's mighty fine
taking pills and drinking wine

Hmmm.

What's stifling me here is the question of what kind of locales you'd use. I'm worried my country names would be too modern...hmm. Is "off the Horn" a specific place or a general location, like a meadow or a bay?

If I get something wrong here, please say so.

Were you ever out in Spain
Where the men are rather vain
And the ladies cry, "Again!"
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

Were you ever in Paris (pronounced Par-ee)
Picking fruit right from the tree?
Where all is pleasant and carefree
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

Perhaps more later, after criticism :)

Edit: Just saw LSPE's offerings, very nice. I like the modern ones too, heh. :snap:

DAMN I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!

arguhhh!!! As many as you can provide- those are awesome!!!!!

(we can diddle with words to make them period- the ideas are great to work with!!)

Place names- pretty free reign there. Doesn't have to be specific only to the 1500's.

Keeping in line with sailing songs, drinking songs, fantasy, Camelot (we have a Camelot verse too:
Were you ever in Camelot
Where the girls give all they've got
Because they're tired of Lancelot
Bonnie Heilnd Laddie!)

Thanks- more than I can say! :snap: :snap:

If I could mojo you right now CP- I so would!

Were you ever in Manhattan
Where the ladies in fur and satin
Look bored and wait for love to happen
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

Were you ever in Hawaii
Where they dine on poi and Mahi-Mahi,
Do the hula and surf in a tsunami
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

Were you ever stopped in Wales
Where the mighty Grey King pales
And the Once and Future King sets sail
Bonnie Heiland Laddie

Were you ever in Old Scotland
Where in Jane’s embrace, fair Tam-Lin pinned
Had forced the Fairy Queen to rescind
Bonnie Heiland Laddie

LSPE- I have been playing with your offerings- what do you think:

Were you ever in St. Ives
where a handsome knight does strive
to save gentle maidens' lives
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

Were you ever in Brisbane
building castles in the rain
a pence a day ain’t worth the pain
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

I KNEW you guys were up to this challenge. My group will love these!

Another muse- a member of our group did this one. same rythym and cadence- different type of verse-
When he turns up, he'll get quite a row
Me no good scoundrel of a husband, Joe
Took to sea a year ago
Bonny Heiland Laddy

and for further inspiration:
And what of that narsty dragon?
Who did appear when ye were braggin'
and drinking deep from yer flaggon!
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

For what's the purpose of rum and gin
But to capture the fancy of a maiden's sin
And erase, with kisses, the night's chagrin
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

My lover took to sea in a bonny boat
"The fastest on water", his mates did boast
"But she sank like a stone," the papers wrote
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

She made me a card out of seashells
From the sands where my timber boat fells,
And I kiss it goodnight, but I'm missing her smells
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

When you crossed the Khyber Pass -
Did you come across a lass
Who took great pride in her big eyes?
Bonnie Heiland Laddie!

(sorry Neph, I was channeling Benny Hill for a second)

Peachy edits, C. Try these ones--

Did you see in old Sherwood
a noble-robbing Robin Hood
bequeath the gold unto the good?

Visit Stratford-on-Avon
to see a clever knave upon
the stage, his shining dagger drawn?
