Now that we know the Gallery announcement of 50th "events" is a bust, it seems that the May 5th media extravaganza is the last chance for Disney to announce something big for the 50th.

I 'm hoping a 50 hour party is still in the works, but realize that one's a long shot now. Anything else you hope they'll do for the 50th?

I don't know.......but I'm singing "Is that all there is?".OK, this is WAY off topic, but this reminded me of something:

A couple of years back, when Brea (the humble little burg where GusGus and I live) had just completed building "Birch Street" - a new downtown nightlife hub with 12 screens of theatres, restaurants, cafes, clothing stores and insane traffic - they decided to have a "Tree Lighting" for Christmas featuring none other than Cathy Rigby (I know she is better remembered by most for other things, but I will forever associate her with feminine napkins and this story). I really didn't want to do this, but GusGus insisted.

They publicized it heavily. Shut down one end of Birch and set up a stage for local dance troups, tap dancers, choirs, etc. They had what has become the usual HUGE Christmas tree ornament balls (about 10' diameter" and a host of other festive holiday decorations (but alas no Christmas tree - I guess there was no room anywhere).

Finally the big moment arrived. They had Ms. Rigby climb a tall ladder (hmm... kinda cheesy) with a microphone. She played it up big, talking about Christmas wishes and dreams and how if we all wished real hard, the lights would light up and the spirit of Christmas would come alive on Birch Street. We were all getting excited for the *big* moment (well, I was getting real bored by this time, but I digress).

The tension was mounting. The excitement was building. Finally, after much hamming by Ms Feminine Napkin, we start to count down from 10 to 1. Oohhh; can you feel the glee??? I didn't. Finally, we hit ONE and the lights come on!!!!

It was just little lights wrapped around the bottom (about as high as you can reach with a standard household ladder) of the palm trees along the street, spotlights on the aforementioned balls and maybe a couple of other insignificant effects.

And then came the moment that made the whole painful experience worth it. Cathy says on the microphone, offhandedly and not meant for public consumption, but loud enough for all to hear, "Is that it?"

Kevy wins for best total derailment ever. :snap: :D

Um.....I have no hope left. Disney can do whatever it wants. We'll have fun regardless.

To be sure a 50-hour party will be had, with occasional forays into the park during normal operating hours. But still, I hope for some afterhour celebrating within the park.
