In its current state, however, the iUnlock solution is not for the technically-challeneged or faint-of-heart. It requires a "jailbroken" iPhone, rudimentary knowledge of using a unix terminal, experience with SFTP and some patience. Some tutorials on how to apply the hack have also begun to crop up, but they're currently rough around the edges.

Still better than whipping out a soldering iron.

Yeah, but WAY beyond my capabilities.

I had to have a friend hack my TiVo for me years ago to put in the second hard drive.

Nope. Just interesting to see what happens now. While it's not illegal to unlock your phone, it's not illegal for them to turn it into a $400 paper weight.

Are the software updates forced or opt in?

According to Apple, they're optional.

I think it is AWFULLY convenient for Apple that the latest update just HAPPENS to turn your iphone into an expensive paperweight, don't you? I'm sure there'll be a hack for it soon tho to undo what Apple claims are "permanently damaged" phones.

Man, am I happy I don't have an iphone or have to deal with AT&T.
