/hugs MG. You will do fine. You are strong. And more importantly, you did nothing wrong in this entire situation.

It's finally Friday!
Now it just needs to be 5pm. Sushi for dinner. YUM! |
So does anyone actually believe that Barry Bonds never took performance enhancing stuff? I'm not a big baseball watcher anymore (I used to be back in the days when I'd go to games with Dad). Nonetheless, I think it stinks this his record will stand along with all the others who used these drugs. Poo-heds, one and all. Bah.
Of course, since he's not passed Aaron's record yet, I'm secretly hoping he has some injury that prevents him from ever playing ball again, just shy of the record. |
I really have no idea how to feel about it. There's the whole, "everyone was doing it" argument that I instinctively roll my eyes at, but then I see the parasite reporters hounding Bonds in the locker room after a game because he didn't hit a homerun and it occurs to me that I have no concept of what it's like to live under that kind of microscope and pressure. Not that it excuses it, but it certainly contextualizes it.
Then there's the the fact that, while pure strength is certainly an aid, Bonds has put the bat on the ball 753 times. No amount of steroids can give you that skill and there will always be something to be said about the fact that he could flat out hit (I say "could" only because he no longer even tries for base hits, he's just swinging for the record now). |
Yes, there are.
I'm not too bothered by the use of steroids, in general I see no reason why they should be against the rules in the first place. Odds are the steroids had little to do directly with his home run hitting. More muscle doesn't make you any better at hitting the ball perfectly. If anything it helped him play longer and more regularly than he might otherwise have done. Yet thousands of products that do that are allowed. All of the hallowed baseball records are tainted in some way or another (during Hank Aaron's era the use of amphetamines by ball players was pervasive and I'd be surprised if he didn't use them as well. Babe Ruth had the advantage of never having to play against some of the best ballplayers around. The big reason I didn't/don't want him to break the record is because other people care and I don't want to have to listen to this debate for the next 10-12 years (at least) while we wait for Alex Rodriguez to break the record. Though I am hoping that Griffey will experience a drug-free Bonds like late-stage burst. Three more seasons like he is having this year and he'll be 41 with more than 700 homers. |
Thanks GD and Alex. I appreciate your responses. Somehow I thought that there was not any question about earlier records. Just shows my lack of knowledge on the subject. I'll leave it at that.

Just to clarify, since they are illegal steroids should obviously be against the rules. I meant I don't see any baseball specific reason they should be against the rules.

The last time I tried to log on to MSN to check my hotmail account, it asked me if I wanted to upgrade. I said no, later. Well, I haven't been able to access the account since. Error this, whatever.
Is anyone else having trouble? I heard that YouTube was going to be overloaded with people sending things from Comic Con. {I guess everyone else is techy savy 'cause I don't get it....}. About the baseball~ I get that the steroids didn't give him the skill {and I know Jack about what you are talking about but I do have an opinion based on what little I do know...} but it did give him the endurance to continue to perform at his level at bat. You know, like when they need to take out a pitcher after he has spent his energy? Compare this to old records~ they achieved these levels without them{steroids}. Did that make sense? |
