Just got some inside info from management's yearly review meeting where they literally rank us lowly peons by our value to the company. And you can guess from the location of this post the tone of that info. :)

Congrats GD, that's great news!

Of course it remains to be seen if that translates into any sort of compensation. Last year the company, having already cut back vacation accrual and suspending 401k matching, also kept raises to a minimum. Since, they've given us our vacation accrual back and restored 401K matching, but only partially. They have not said one way or another if raises will be affected again this year. Hopefully not. Of course, there's a chance (not holding my breath) I'll be promoted in which case I'd be getting a decent raise either way. Though I am of course just happy that I continue to be considered valuable.

I just got my evaluation from the Organizing Institute training I went to earlier this month- :D

I scored a 1-

Best possible score is 1.

So I'm pleased.

Congratulations to both Greg and Matt!

My boss just called from our accountants office in NY. He apologetically told me that he's giving me a $1/hour raise, but there'll be more at the end of the year.

Since it came completely out of the blue (and he's financing my side project), I was delighted.

Since we're sharing, I had my midyear review with my boss yesterday. It was positive though meaningless since bonuses and raises only happen at the end of the year. And unless there's money involved I don't need to hear how my management thinks I'm doing unless there's a problem, in which case they'd be stupid to wait until a formal review to tell me.

But really, great news all around, folks!

Hey, I'm honest with my bosses. First day with any new boss I tell them some version of this (exact wording changes but bluntness is the same):

"I will know how well I'm doing. I know when I'm doing my job well and when I'm not. If you think I'm not, let me know right away. If you think I am, you can blow sunshine up my ass all year and while I won't stop you I won't care. Do not nominate me for awards with prizes that are heavy hunks of plastic that'll I just throw away or free trips to corporate retreats because spending drunken time doing team building exercises with people I--at best--barely know is not a reward. So you won't hurt my feelings if you don't tell me every week how wonderfully I'm doing. I work because you pay me, so the way you tell me that I'm doing a good job is you pay me more. I won't negotiate with you for salary, I won't request raises, but if I know the opportunity was there and I didn't get one or I know I got less than average I'll assume that means I'm doing a bad job and if I don't think that's the case I'll assume you don't appreciate the good job I'm doing."

So far, it has worked out very well. I get big raises and bonuses when they're available. I have no ugly plastic awards on my desk. And I've never attended a black tie function in an exotic locale with people I don't want to be with.
