is it just me, or are there a bunch of more intelligent sounding options to "shot dead" ?

At the very least "gunned down" would have sounded better.

But remember they write to a 3rd grade level because that's what they think the average American can comprehend.

Shot alive? I mean, the person was (presumable) alive when they were shot, so it would sound more accurate.

Similar to situations described as a "near miss". No, it was an ACTUAL miss: it was a near HIT.
