I saw Allan Melvin, but I missed Suzanne Pleshette. That's too bad. She was pretty. He wasn't.

The fact that Allan Melvin played Barney on "All in the Family" got me thinking about all the Barneys on TV: Barney Fife, Barney Rubble, Barney Miller, Barney Gumble. I'm probably missing a few. Yet, I have never known a Barney in real life.

Pleshette had that fabulous voice, and she was a very handsome woman with a knack for comedy.

As for Barney: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barney

I'd forgotten that it is a derivative (or dimmunitive) of Barnard.

A Barney sold me my current car. I think that's the only one I ever met.
