Does anybody have any REAL info on the Indian Gaming propositions? I'd love to hear what's actually going on there.

State wants money. Some casinos were willing to give state more money in exchange for expanded agreements on how big their casino operations were and also some relief from certain environmental impact requirements.

These deals are unfair to other small casino running tribes operating in sparsely populated areas but the funding of the opposition is mostly from Vegas gambling interests that really don't want to see the SD and Palm Springs area casinos get bigger.

Beyond that I don't care. My view is it doesn't really matter. The Indians can legalize rape and the selling of crack to infants for all I care. It is their land, they make the rules and my preference would be that we have absolutely nothing to say in the matter. So I'll vote yes on anything any of them want.

This is one of the rare exceptions to my otherwise pretty solid "vote no on all initiatives regardless of merit since I don't approve of the initiative process" rule.

Well, I'm just very suspicious of anything related to Indian Gaming after the stunt they tried to pull last time where they were touting some bill as getting them to "pay their fair share" (I hate that phrase), but in exchange, and what they didn't want to tell you, was that part of the initiative basically FORCED the state into perpetual renewals of the gaming agreements. Forced. As is why bother going to the trouble of "renewing" since it was for all intents and purposes perpetual and the state would no longer be able to end them.

So now I look at anything involving gaming very closely. I mean, I'm all for revenues, but I consider at what cost.

edit: okay, I'm starting a thread for this in the proper forum so we don't hijack the Sooo... thread

Understandable, but like I said, I'm of the opinion that the tribes shouldn't even have to have gaming agreements with the state, let alone have to go through a hassle to renew them.

So I'm an easy sell.

Plus, anything that puts legal blackjack and poker tables closer to my apartment is a net positive increase of good in the world so far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for the pointers re: polling place everyone. I'll make the call and see.

Yeah, I've never really understood the concept of, "We've given them sovereign land...but we're going to pass laws that govern how they run it." It's either sovereign or it ain't.

Yesterday, at the park, I was near the exit to the Haunted Mansion and saw a lady looking at her map with her child.
"Okay, it looks like we're in Cooter Country." She said. "I mean, Critter Country."
I laughed.
:D
