After weighing all of my options for tonight, I have decided to just go to a friend's house and hang out and watch movies all night. just the 2 of us. I really wanted to go out of town, but I can't justify the cost of gas. I was also invitied to a few different local venues where different friend's bands are playing, but that got ruled out because I won't drink and drive tonight. Oh well, should still be fun and it is better than staying home alone.

Musings on 2010. I came to terms with the fact that as painful as it was to discover I am more of a dog person. The long happy flirtation with felines began many years ago. As the years drew on, I still felt a void in my life. A void I tried to fill with many things, but in the end it was a void that was only filled with the love of a pug or two.
Sadly, I have been I've been over the legal long beach pet limit for some time. After a disagreement over parking with the neighbor I believe they reported my 'illegal harboring'. I need to find homes immediately for 11 beatiful kitties. Though it will hurt in the short term I will find joy in placing them in lovin homes and will mop my tears in the folds of my sweet thurston. Please let me know which cats you would like to adopt. I only have until jan 7 to comply. |
Oh, Lisa- I'm so sorry! I wish, wish, wish I could! We have the room, but we're too far away, and Haku had put Samwise close to the edge as it is! Big hugs- I know how hard this must be for you. :(
|
I'd take one if we could.
|
Oh no! So sad to hear. We just don't have the room. After getting a new kitten for my birthday, we're up to 2 dogs and a cat.
|
Ugh, screw your neighbor. Sorry to hear that. I hope you can find great homes for them. Will you be able to keep any of the cats?

I can't wait for it to be Wednesday morning. We'll be on the train to Burbank, and it will all be too late to worry about. |
Quote:
|
what about her Hello Kitty wristwatch?
|
Not vital.
|
Actually I was thinking it might be good to have a watch- but all of them need new batteries. My dad's old watch, a Goofy one, a purple one (would never wear pink!!!!), or the tiny little pretty one my mom bought me. Given how close we are to the wire, I doubt it will happen at all.
|
The last two watches I've worn on a daily basis are "automatics" - they wind themselves simply by the momentum of wearing them. I doubt I'll ever go back to a watch with batteries.
|
I don't want a self-winding (or solar powered) watch because then I'd wear the same watch for the rest of my life. The death of a battery is my trigger to treat myself to a new watch.
|
I'm clumsy enough that my trigger is when the crystal is scratched up enough that I'd need to send it in to get it replaced. I think at this point I keep wearing a watch mostly because if I didn't, judging by the abuse my watch faces take, I'd shatter my wrist without one.
|
I can never keep a wristwatch running for more than a month or so. It doesn't matter if it's a wind-up, battery powered, or self-winding - digital or analog. They all just stop on me. Must be my magnetic personality...
|
I'm told my grandpa was like that- never could keep a watch running.
I was successful in my quest- so a pretty watch with a square face and numbers, and my dad's old watch with just tick-marks both have new batteries and the guy even set the right time! |
Quote:

They still make that? That was one of my favorite watches EVER.
|
It has been years since I've worn a watch. Sometimes I miss it for aesthetic reasons, but timekeeping never seems to be an issue.
|
So, I had a near brush with disaster today. Seems I get to fill out the 450 ethics form this year, and among the items you're required to disclose are any future job offers you've accepted.

So.... I'm on a plane. Flying across the country. Six hours. It has WiFi. I'm bored. Hi. I can get Hulu, sorta. The trail mix was nasty. I brought a sandwich. It's dark. I think it's cloudy. |
Well, someone's got to put the fun in DeFuniak.
|
So....IF we were going to Hawaii, which island and where should we stay?
|
What do you like to do? My default answer is Kauai.
|
Depends on what you want. Excitement/nightlife you go to Oahu (a bit like San Diego though, IMHO). Wanna go super slow and just lounge on your hotel's beach, you go to Kauai. Want the best of both worlds you hit Maui.
|
I should say, I say Kauai but default because it is, in my opinion, the prettiest of the islands I've been to. I don't think I ever spent any time on a beach there, whenever I was there it was for school projects and I was in the company of locals with specific work to do.
So it may really suck as a tourist. |
To be fair, I didn't mention the Big Island. There's probably a lot going there, but the only time I visited it we were at a hotel in the middle of miles of lava, so didn't get to see the nice side.
|
I haven't been there since 1971, but I thought Kauai was beautiful, the road to Hana on Maui incredible, the volcanos and lava fields of Hawaii amazing and didn't care much for Oahu. I'm not much of a beach person, though.
|
The miles of lava are the nice side (or at least, the side I liked best).

A new kitten showed in my yard today before dawn. I heard a commotion outside my window and opened the window but couldn't see much. I heard a little cry that wasn't like any of my animals so I went out to investigate. It is the cutest little thing but my outdoor cats want to kill it. I've locked it in the garage and started putting up signs but the darn wind keeps bowing them away.
It is an adorable kitten with very unusual stripping and a huge motor. I'm sure someone is missing it and hopefully I can find them!! |
Oh - little kitty kitty. I hope you find your home soon. I've always been a cat person but it's been a good 17 years since I had a cat. Annoyingly, it took three and a half months for me to engineer it. |
I'm getting the same delay Alex is when opening this thread.
And Alex, congrats on the demotion! |
Thanks, I don't actually consider it a demotion (and from a corporate hierarchy point of view it is a lateral move) but from a business person's perspective it is definitely a step backwards.
But I've advanced to a point along this chain where I really do know I don't want to advance any farther and while I'm good at my job I don't really care about my job. So I've put myself back onto a track where I know I'll be able to say "if my boss leaves I want his job, and then when his boss leaves I'll want that one too." |
Well just in case you need it, may I suggest you think about http://rim.jobs? (work safe)

I know it is work safe, I've been teasing my contacts at RIM since someone tweeted that yesterday.
But it is a delicate line. I have to be very certain they know what a rimjob is before I do it because I don't want to have to explain it. Unsurprisingly pretty much everybody at RIM is very much aware of it. |

Our phones here at the office went down last Friday at about 2:30 and are still down. Found out that due to the rain and a car hitting something, a main trunk line is down because it was flooded. Apparently, it is a 3600 twisted pair (3600 phone line) segment. AT&T has been working around the clock through the weekend - I spoke with the guys working on it last night (if you see the right lane of eastbound MacArthur closed between Bristol and Main - now you know what it is about).
Yesterday went out and bought a Go Phone for $30.00 and are having our phones forwarded to it. I also set up an eFax number (along with a dummy GMail account) to cover faxes. We sent out a broadcast email Monday morning to all of our contacts Friday morning. Hopefully everything is back up later today or tomorrow at the latest. Oddly, we still have internet, even though our fax line (which is the carrier line for our DSL) is down. So much fun :( |
Guess your boss didn't want anybody to call while he's in South America. Limits the trouble you can get into.

Tori got us into Supernatural- I love, love, love the show!
Speaking of Tori, we asked her what she wanted to do for her 16 birthday. After several days of careful consideration, she finally told me tonight: She wants to spend it in Disneyland, with her LoT family. (No undue influence or pressure on my part, whatsoever. I do think she has ESP, however). Sooooo- looks like a late June 16th b-day Swanking!!! :D Eric is going to try and stay healthy so he can actually come down there this time. Yayyy! This makes me think.
We feed our kids all this info about farms and farm animals, as there's a sort of traditional precedent that makes us link up children's education and farms. But really, doesn't that come from the days when lots of children were growing up ON farms, and it was only natural they should first be taught about their environment? "But kids LIKE farms," the culture at large responds. Hmm... do they like farms because they genuinely are interested in farming, or because it's what we've been teaching them about and producing toys for all this time? If we were to replace farm themes in early childhood toys, what WOULD we replace them with? Fun to muse on. Not particularly useful, but fun to think about. |

I find farming to be a socially important topic to enforce. It's becoming more and more obvious that the level of abstraction between us and the source of our food has unintended and undesirable consequences. We need to continue SOME attempt to keep the idea that where our food comes from is a real, tangible place with life in the social milieu.

So, the next stage of the home theatre update was completed tonight. Put in the new TiVo over the weekend and moved the old one to the bedroom.
And then found out that not all programs can be transferred from the old one to the new one: copy protected programs are a no go. So moved the old one back to the livingroom tonight... sigh And why the hell do we have three DVD players in the livingroom?!? Well, one is the 400 disk carousel (with no HDMI), one is a DVD recorder which isn't even hooked up (again, not HDMI), and the Blue Ray. I think it is time for a tear-down and rebuild... |
We're home from a wonderful - and much delayed - weekend away. This was SUPPOSED to be the trip we took at Thanksgiving. We almost didn't make it this time either. But, we went and breathed and played in snow, and cuddled with puglets and spent time with my Bro and SIL, and went exploring on mountain roads, and saw things I've never seen before - and one I don't want to see again.
The cats are happy, the house is here, and reality begins again tomorrow. And, oh what a reality it is. Boo. |

Moonie, that's awful. Is there some place she can get off it and find an alternate route home???? When they closed the road, do they just make everybody sit there? That can't be right. They have to let her out, someplace.
|
From reading about other incidents people do indeed get stuck sleeping in their cars.
We keep earthquake kits in our cars. Do people with massive snow keep blizzard kits (with blankets and warm clothing?) |
Spend the night in the car? In a blizzard? Not on my bucket list! I hope she can get home - or get somewhere warm.
|
Yikes. I hope Mrs. Moonie gets home safely. My grandma always made us keep a blanket and water in our car for just such emergencies.
|
I suppose it's too late to put a plug in for the car emergency kit we bought at Costco several years back. $15, it included a ton of stuff, most relevantly an emergency blanket.
Thinking warm thoughts for Ms. Moonie :( |
Quote:

That's scary! Hope everything turns out OK.

Yikes - sending warms thoughts to Mrs Moonliner.
|
I'm sending her some of our summer. (and the emergency blanket sounds like a good idea.)
|
When I lived in cold, yes, we kept supplies in the car. Not a formal kit, but we had food and usually a bottle of water or something. Can't keep too much, because the water will freeze and crack the bottle, but we tried to keep something. And usually a space blanket or something, boots, extra gloves.
|
*sigh*
Well that was one for the record books. Mrs. Moonie was trapped in her car pretty much all night. She finally made it home about 5:30am. She did OK, she had a blanket and a hybrid car that let her idle more than the gas guzzlers around her. Note to self: Upgrade "blizzard" kit to include large tin can. |

It seems weird to think that soon, Kodak - the company that seems synonymous with film and photography - may no longer be in the film and photography business.
I am in the printing business and they still have a huge presence here, particularly with their high-speed ink-jet technology (they have an ink-jet printing press as well as high-speed ink-jet heads for attaching on to web printing presses - we use this technology on some of our larger mailing projects). It just seems weird that they may no longer make film. |
I'm glad Mrs Moonie is safe.

I had four finals this week-one was yesterday, and three were today. So, my overall grade is an A for art, an A in Integrated Communications, a B in Math, and an A in biology. 3.75 baby! Woot!!

Coming in late to the Mrs. Moonie business. Whew, I'm glad I arrived when it was safely over.
Kevy ... what's film? |
Today, one of my clients was talking about the snowstorm and how people were stranded in their cars overnight- I just said "Uhm, yeah- a friend's wife was one of them!" Glad she's okay, Moonie!

It was dead calm in Brea this morning: not even a slight breeze.
The drive in to work was a different story. |
I stepped out this morning, to find a patio chair blocking the front door. There were all kinds of wheeled trashcans doing zombie walks around the neighborhood. A lady at the bus stop nearly got blown into the street.

Not. Dear wind: Go away now. Kthxbai. Love, My sinuses. |
My house makes interesting noises in the wind. :) No trash cans doing zombie walks here, though.

It was blustery here in GG this morning. The wind was blowing through the cracks around one of the doors at work; making an eerie moaning sound.
|
Still no wind here.

Well, night 3 of T's sleep training is taking (oh, hey, took - I hear CP emerging from the nursery) is going less efficiently than nights 1 and 2. But at least that means 45 minutes of general kvetching rather than horrible wailing. But it does mean CP is imprisoned in the room for 45 minutes.

Glad it's going (reasonably) well!

I don't know what to think any more. We just got some not-awesome news from the GI doc. I need to get off this good news/bad news roller coaster.
Maybe the only way to come to terms with being dealt a sh*tty hand is to take it one day at a time. I don't have any control over what's happening right now, and torturing myself with any sort of fiction that I do is doing no one any good. All I can do is be the best I can be every day: for me, for him, for my friends, and for my family. Right? Right? |
Right.

Right!
Good thoughts for all you lovely people going through such sh.t right now. |

Ditto, Erica. One day at a time. Here's hoping one day will be good day that lasts forever.
And Ditto C.P.'s thoughts of good for all the wonderful peeps going thru decidedly unwonderful times right now. The stuff of sad cheese. :( |
Erica, my mantras lately have been "it's beyond my control", "One day at a time", "Laugh in the face of adversity" and "FUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!". I'm not sure any of them are keeping me sane, but I'm not sure I started out sane in the first place.
Oh, and I keep accusing people of stealing my crystal ball. |
Add me to the list of people with sick parents. My Dad just got out of hospital after several days because his platelet count was at 25,000. The recommended minimum/maximum for platelets is 150,000 - 450,000. The did a CAT Scan of his spleen and bone marrow biopsy.

So, I gave the hospital orders not to use a feeding tube on my mother. It's odd that I have an option to starve my mother to death, but I can't just give her morphine.
Also, instead of spending time with my mother today I've been chasing down Medi-cal so I can get her approved for Hospice care. Perhaps she'll live long enough to use it. |
Quote:
|
Yeah, you have to get her out of the hospital and into hospice for All The Morphine You Can Eat, basically.
It was a godsend for my mom, and the hospice people were terrific. She was under there care for about 2 months, I think. But it was a much better way to reach the end than being under medical care. All my best, Chris. |

Theo was bitten at playgroup today. Didn't break skin but damn close.
There's this kid who is oddly aggressive for no reason. He'll be playing fine for ages and suddenly shove kids over, or grab toys with force, or bite. Mom makes him apologize, sits him out for a few minutes, then lets him back in. He always deals with the aftermath in a very calm manner, hugging the poor tortured child and going right back to playing. In other words, no consequences. There were purple dents in Theo's finger for ages afterward, and then I had to deal with her apologizing to me and NOT tell her to take her f'd up child home. It really sucks because I actually like this mom a lot, it's not like she's a monster herself. She's just too forgiving of her child's aggression. I think I'll bring it up at the next board meeting. If this happens again to Theo I'm going to tell her to her face that she needs to take her kid home when he does these things, if not to teach him a lesson, then as protection for the other children. |
Time for boxing lessons.

Who's got the best wife in the world? I do!
Watching the news early this morning there was mention of the upcoming Space Shuttle flight in the context of it being one of the last. I mentioned I'd always wanted to see one. She said "So why don't you go?" After I picked my jaw up off the floor I thought "Why not?" Fly down Wednesday back on Thursday, one night cheap hotel, option to wait it out over the weekend if need be... Yeah, I can do this! So I'm booked for one Shuttle Launch trip. Everyone please send good vibes to NASA to get this sucker off on time! |

But Lani and I enjoy just driving so it was all ok. And the jinxedness of it all (a 2-hours-to-go-1-mile traffic accident near Cisco Gap, a call to AAA the next morning, getting everywhere interesting just after they closed, learning that Death Valley after dark isn't all that different than Kansas, etc.) just gets chalked up to adventuring. Plus, now I can say I've slept at the Wills Fargo Motel in Baker (favorite room feature? The wall lamp about 18" above the right side pillow on the bed). |
So I totally like, like this message. It's like too bad it's like a parody or something.

Here we go again..... Weather forecast for the DC metropolitan region Sunday: For Monday - Light Rain with a wintry mix This Morning: Up to 2 inches of snow Noon: Up to 5 inches of snow Currently: Up to 8 inches of snow I can't wait for the evening news.... :( |
Well, if it helps, Gary Braun said last Thursday on Tony Kornheiser's radio show that up to a foot of snow was possible on Monday (he said that it probably would be rain but that it would be just right on the edge of cold enough that a little bit colder than modeled and it would be a lot of snow).
So, as usual, the sports radio show ends up being the reliable source of information. |
While getting over to the eastern side of the Sierras proved to be something of a cluster****, the views once over there were well worth the trip. Ah, the magical power of snow, for it can even make Reno look pretty.

Ahh I was a little too far north. I think I made something like 20 trips up/down 395 in a two year time span, all kinds of weather. It's still a more preferable drive over the 5. Now I need to do it and take a little more time to enjoy the scenery.
|
So pretty, Alex! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Eastern Sierras. Just the way they jut out of the landscape is incredible. And, yes, there are only 2 sure ways to get over the Sierras in winter - 80 and 58. I think 80 is not even a sure thing at times.
