No man is an island

I used to love that old Sid and Marty Kroft show, "Onanism Island."

Remember the song with the steel drum band? "Come, come to de island, discover yourself and come to de island, yank yourself away from your life, and come splash and plaaay - on Onanism Island!"

This was posted to a cast recordings mailing list I subscribe to. I thought it might interest some-a-y'all.

The 1970 Disney animated film "the Aristocrats" is getting its blu-ray debut on August 21st. There are two new bonuses (in addition to the ones on the previous DVD releases) and one should be of interest to folks here.

It's a 9-minute piece called "The Lost Open" which has Richard Sherman introducing a two-part song that was to be the original opening for the film. It is called "How Much You Mean To Me/Court Me Slowly" and is sung by the butler Edgar and a deleted character (the maid). They found the original story boards and a demo recording by the Sherman brothers and melded the two together.

The previous DVD had a deleted song "She Never Felt Alone" and that seven-minute piece is here too.

The only other new feature is a "Oui Oui Marie" Music video remix.

The updated "Walk in Walt's Footsteps" tour now includes a visit to Walt's Apartment.

Ghoulish Delight 08-10-2012 04:50 PM

Sigh, another blow to elitism.

alphabassettgrrl 08-10-2012 05:17 PM

Cool! I've never done the tour, but to visit the apartment would be fantastic.

Sigh, I think this kinda sucks - but I've also never been in the apartment and I guess I should see it before I die if given the chance.

In other Disney news, according to an Al blurb on "that site," the Aulani resort on Hawaii is doing horribly and is being run by monkeys. They're offering 70% room discounts to cast members thru Christmas in the hopes the place won't seem like a ghost town to the few paying guests.

Anyone besides me think a Disney hotel with no Disney park is a dumb idea, and - if in Hawaii - placing it on one of the less-visited islands an even dumber one?

alphabassettgrrl 08-11-2012 11:41 AM

One of my coworkers is going to the Aulani in a month or two. It sounds like a fun hotel, but I don't know anything about what else one would do there.

Oahu is hardly a "less visited" island. It accounts for almost half of all visit days by tourist (out of something like 5.5 million tourist days about 2.5 million were spent on Oahu).

And a Disney hotel with no Disney park seems to have done okay at Hilton Head and Vero Beach.

So if if it isn't performing I'd tend to think it must be something else (and a prime candidate for me would be not that it is on Oahu, but that it is in a lame part of Oahu, kind of removed from any of the stuff you're likely to want to do on the island).

Funny, I thought I heard that Aulani was getting an expansion.
