I know in TurboTax, you can file now and pay later, but I don't remember exactly how it worked (since I didn't need to know).

I'm playing with Turbo Tax right now.

I'm thinking I need to file separately rather than joint...

With TurboTax, if you efile you can schedule payment for any date up to the 15th of April. Not that this is much of a difference right now.

I owed on my state taxes and I opted for auto debit. It let me choose a date for withdrawal.

That's strange -- I have some divorce cases where they opt to file married, joint before the divorce is finalized for tax purposes since it saves them thousands of dollars....
