That IS one of the downsides of America it seems - vacation entitlements suck.

...but you DO have Butter Buds and Disney Parks.

And we are only 15 minutes away from Disneyland - neener!

Moonliner 08-20-2012 06:07 PM

Wait... What are butter buds?

Kevy Baby 08-20-2012 07:09 PM

Well, I assume he is talking about these.

I get five weeks. That usually ends up being too much.

It's not so much the total amount allotted (if you're established in the corporate world at least), rather the acceptance of actually using it. Here companies have a habit of trying to make you feel guilty for using any of your vacation time to even give yourself a 3 day weekend every once in a while*. Asking for a full week can feel like asking for a favor from the mafia. In contrast with much of the rest of the world where it's commonplace and encouraged to take extended leaves.

* The exception being if the company happens to want to make their financials look better, in which case they want all those long term employees with vacation days banked to use them because as long as they're on the books they count against their bottom line

Fortunately, I've never had anybody ever try to hamper me in when or how much vacation I used.

But that may just be the combined byproducts of a) my general indifference to what other people think of me; b) I never ask for time off, I tell them when I'm taking it off; and c) I'm really good at my job so what are they going to do about it anyway.

Or you're in a situation [like me] where you take a 3 or 4 day weekend, nothing gets done because the people covering for you don't want to and people who need assistance or projects completed are left hanging.

I *can* take a full week off but I'd be terrified of what I'd come back to and never enjoy my vacation.

Your trip sounds amazing! So excited for you two!
