I'm guessing they wanted a little more control over not just the lighting but then entire atmosphere; shooting outdoors can be a tricky task if you want full control over all of the set elements, not to mention the weather. Plus, buildings and props can be 'cheated' on a soundstage recreation to make the camera angle look better than it otherwise could on Main Street.
