Yep, this one's a must.

(And despite its charms, I distinctly dislike the musical remake)

Cole F'n Porter! Satchmo! High Society is the Bomb!

innerSpaceman 05-30-2006 09:09 PM

The songs are swell, but the performances so pathetically pale in comparison to the classic.

Such a shame to waste such good music on such a crap film. Alas, most musicals are great music matched with crap film. The few that are aces in both departments are among the best, most unusual films of all time.

Y'know, High Society could have sucked (it didn't), but it would be redeemed forever by the perfect couplet:

"Have you heard that Mimsie Starr,
She got pinched in the Astor Bar"

Cracks me up every time.

Well did you evah!

What a swell party it is.

She was stoned!

Have you heard, among this clan,
I am called "The forgotten man"?
Well, did you evah?
What a swell party this is!
Have you heard the story of
Dexter boy being gypped by love?
Well, did you evah!
What a swell party this is!
What frails, what frocks!
What furs, what rocks!
What gaiety!
It's all too exquis!
That French champagne!
So good for the brain!
That band, it's the end!
Kindly don't fall down, my friend,
Have you heard? Professor Munch
Ate his wife and divorced his lunch.
Well, did you evah?
What a swell party this is!
Have you heard? The countess Krupp
Crossed the bridge when the bridge was up.
Well, did you evah?
What a swell party this is!

Have you heard that Mimsie Starr
Just got pinched in the Astor bar?
Well, did you evah?
What a swell party this is!
Have you heard that Uncle Newt
Forgot to open his parachute?
Well, did you evah?
What a swell party this is!
It's great, it's grand!
It's wonderland!
What soup, what fish!
That beef, what a dish!
That grouse, so rare!
That old camembert!
That baba au rhum!
Will you please move over, chum?
Have you heard the poor dear Blanche
Got run down by an avalanche?
Well, did you evah?
What a swell party this is!
Have you heard? It's in the stars
Next July we collide with Mars.
Well, did you evah?
What a swell party this is!

There is a fantastic album called "Red, Hot and Blue" which features all Cole Porter tunes done by contemporary (mostly) rock singers. "Well, Did you Evah" is done by Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop and it is SWELLEGANT!

I highly recommend this entire collection.
