They are no longer using that air strip, however there are several others in the area that they still use. It's rarer than it used to be, but not undheard of for military jets to pass over Disneyland (heck, I'd bet the occasional pilot does it just for fun when they can).

Haha -- I live under LAX practically...

While I'm numb to most of those sounds, in the wrong area, or one that's a little louder than others (i.e. weather effects on the noise), it can be disconcerting. Nothing was stranger than a post-9/11 LAX. Well, maybe NYC was stranger, but y'all know what I'm saying, right?

wow. am i relieved to know that others heard this. YES it was very unnerving. i saw it on the first pass and it was definitely a fighter jet. the first was at 6:35, and the second pass came 10 minutes later. it was extremely low as i could clearly see every detail of the jet. the roar was intense!

Being away from any source of news i was trippin out, waiting to get to the car. and like you said, not a word mentioned on the news.

the jet was just north of the park on the first pass, near Lincoln...flying west and then south. since i was indoors during the second pass i did not know what flight path it was on. but i about pissed my pants! i thought, "WTF!"

i have no answers as to why it was there. there was no ball game. yes, the el toro base was being used as a polling place, and perhaps it was added security for that event. but why it was over Disneyland is beyond me.

good to get it off my chest 'cuz it really freaked me out.

YES! very strange and eerily quiet and still...except for occasional sounds of fighter jets overhead. i was grateful to know they were US jets! that was a very strange time in our lives that we will never forget.

Thanks for sharing, Lickey. Nice to know that we aren't the only ones that reacted in the way we did. It's about the only time ever that I didn't want to be at Disneyland, and that is saying a lot. :)

Indeed, I do. :)

Yeah, MBC- that would have been very disconcerting- I don't blame you at all for being a little freaked out.

We are on a turnaround flight path for Spokane International, and so it was so weird post 9/11 to not hear planes circling overhead. A few days after the flight blackout, all the sudden we heard wave after wave of planes flying overhead- we went running outside to see, and they were taking off from Fairchild AFB and flying in a direct path over our house (Which is something they never do). It was just plane after plane going, and I remember thinking that this was what it must have been like during WWII. Not a word was mentioned on the TV or radio, but every resident in Spokane knew something was up.

That's crazy to hear a military jet that close to DL. I think it's a bit weird when any plane flies over because isn't DL a No-Fly zone? I thought that no planes of any kind were allowed to fly over DL since 9/11. Anyone?

Kevy Baby 01-30-2005 11:43 AM

I confess... it was me.

I was bored, so I drove down to Miramar, stole a jet, read the manual on how to fly it (I have never flown a plane before), flew all around Southern California (including my beloved Disneyland - it's really cool from the sky) and then returned the jet when I had to pee.

Somehow, nobody noticed.
