If you're really lucky, the cop will just zoom up behind you, flash its lights at you, and then use their loudspeaker to scold you as they zoom on by.

I had that happen to me on the Grapevine. A CHP car pulled in behind me and turned on the lights. Some idiot chose that moment to pass both the chippy and me in the right-hand lane. The chippy changed lanes, and went after him instead. :D

I would also advise against cutting off a CHP officer. My last few tickets all came from changing lanes into the path of a speeding squad car - which I have of course failed to see. They get quite mad and are not at all forgiving.
