Is you're source of that knowledge the same as mine? Namely a very frequently played radio commercial back in the mid-90s that said something like:
"Learnign Spanish is easy. Spell socks. S-O-C-K-S. See, isn't it easy!"
That's not even close to the exact wording but that was the spirit of what they said. I imagined them teaching the whole language by memorizing what English word to spell in key situations.
