You don't sleep directly on the mats, they have Futons, and if you're after extra comfort, just grab another couple of futons and pile them up ! (I used one, but Mum used two) Also, the share bathroom was never a problem. I think we had to wait about 15 mins once, but the rest of the time we went straight in. Also, there's never anyone alone if LoTters share rooms ! :D
Oh, and yes, there's western toilets, but no "washlet" to shoot you in the face.
