Dear Moonliner,
Although I'm not inclined to worry, if you have read the first few chapters of Bill Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything" you'd be a little more sceptical...scientists have clung to the most radical (and incorrect) theories for decades (sometimes centuries). This is often through ignorance, religious belief, or purely because one of " their own" didn't make the discovery first.
For example, and for these kinds of reasons, it wasn't accepted that the Earth was hit by a huge asteroid in Yucutan (that ended the Dinosaurs virtually overnight) until the 2000's ...after hundreds of years of negative speculation.
In other words, they have been known to be wrong almost as much as right. Even Einstein was proven wrong on plate tectonics (movement of earth's crust, above and below oceans).
Soooooooo...we had better stock up on French wine, Swiss cheese and a huge puncture repair kit in case things end up as " oops - missed it by that much".
Love and hugs,
The Stoat.
