At least here is one issue where the Christian fundamentalists will agree with those snooty elitist scientists.

Consuming the entire planet in a black hole would quite decidedly prevent the rapture. Therefore it can't happen. And if both scientists and the bible say we're safe then I think it's a lock.

You know, it's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

If it happens, the Bush administration will end early. That's a plus.

I'd say it's a tossup. On the one hand, some things here in Switzerland are built amazingly well. On the other hand, some things are built with a defiantly in-your-face stupidity. The apartments have no smoke detectors and in many buildings you can't get out of the building in an emergency without your key. I'm guessing that the end of the world is a consequence that many Swiss engineers could live with.

I think I might have to watch Until the End of the World again

Dear Moonliner,

Although I'm not inclined to worry, if you have read the first few chapters of Bill Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything" you'd be a little more sceptical...scientists have clung to the most radical (and incorrect) theories for decades (sometimes centuries). This is often through ignorance, religious belief, or purely because one of "their own" didn't make the discovery first.

For example, and for these kinds of reasons, it wasn't accepted that the Earth was hit by a huge asteroid in Yucutan (that ended the Dinosaurs virtually overnight) until the 2000's ...after hundreds of years of negative speculation.

In other words, they have been known to be wrong almost as much as right. Even Einstein was proven wrong on plate tectonics (movement of earth's crust, above and below oceans).

Soooooooo...we had better stock up on French wine, Swiss cheese and a huge puncture repair kit in case things end up as "oops - missed it by that much".

Love and hugs,

The Stoat.

Looks like I'll be the first to go. Maybe I should sign up for that rapture email list...
