Add another vote to the "get thy bootie to a dr." crowd! If it's strep you need some antibiotics.

Like Cirquelover we also do hot water, lemon juice and honey for bad sore throats. Also try to keep a humidifier in your bedroom if you have one to help keep your throat moisture and drink as much water as you can!!

Big hugs and I hope you get to the bottom of your mystery illness and feel better REAL SOON!!

Another vote for "go to the Dr." - and soon. Strep will not cure itself and can become a more dangerous infection. All of the OTC and home remedies will ease and comfort your symptoms but will not cure what you have. Only a Dr. can determine what it is you really are suffering from and how it should be treated. It sounds like, whatever it is, it is bad enough to warrant a trip to the Doctor.

I'm sensing a pattern here...

Sweet, sweet sweet, sweet sweet.

Let's all warble like nightingales,
Give your throat a treat.

How to Treat Strep Throat

</B>
Steps: 1. See your doctor for a throat culture. An instant strep throat test can tell you if you have strep throat in less than 30 minutes.

A. Avoid inserting Tampons down your gullet.

2. Take antibiotics as ordered by your doctor - generally 250 mg of penicillin G orally every six hours. The penicillin family is very effective in killing the strep bacteria.

A. For added fun, request a shot in the butt.

3. Check your temperature twice a day, to assess the severity of your infection.

A. That's right, a rectal thermometer.

4. Take aspirin to reduce fever and inflammation.

A. Help keep Johnson and Johnson workers employed.

5. Suck on throat lozenges - especially those containing menthol, benzocaine or phenol, which will help numb the throat.

A. Other types of suckers may not help.

6. Gargle with mint mouthwash or salt water.

A. Rinse your toothbrush in mouthwash between brushings. Strep can live on your toothbrush.

7. Avoid cigarette smoke and other airborne irritants.

A. Try cigars insteaad.

8. Drink ice-cold beverages. Try filling a glass half full of crushed ice, then pouring orange juice over the ice. Let sit for 10 minutes, insert a straw, and suck slowly, letting the icy juice rest a moment on the back of your throat.

A. Give your throat a treat!

9. Add moisture to the air with a humidifier, vaporizer or by sitting in a steamy shower or bath.

A. being naked always intensifies the effectiveness of this therapy.

10. Get lots of rest. Tips: Strep throat loves to piggyback as a secondary infection to mononucleosis. If you have had mono and then have a severe sore throat, suspect strep and see your doctor. Warnings: Left untreated, strep throat can lead to difficulty breathing and faulty heart valves. When in doubt, see your doctor.

Wow Dr. Lickey, some good advice there!

Miracle cure all for symptomology - hot theraflu. Knocks you right out at night and you can sleep.

I just came off something similar, with a fever getting up to 103 (when not on medication) for about 5 days. Only really today (day 8 after the start) do I feel even somewhat back to normal. I completely empathize with you and wish you a speedy recovery.

Is your throat white?...if it is...you've most likely got strep!

And everyone else is right...nothing but antibiotics will help! Go for an antibiotic injection vs meds...you'll be feeling better in 24 hours!

If it's not strep....the best rememdy besides OTC meds is gargling hot salt water. Discovered this when I was pregnant with Bailey and couldn't take anything stronger than a Tylenol. It helped enough to let me sleep!

Get well soon Ally!

Hugggggggsssss!

Aww! You guys!! You know I'm never, ever to sick to let you all know how much I love and care about all of you! Thank you!! :) :coffee:

Holy ovaries, Kevy! I'm definitely not pregnant! :p

It looks like an emergency trip to the Doctor's office Monday morning. Thankfully, the Tylenol 3 is soothing my aches and making it a bit tolerable to at least swallow a little, and sleep for a few hours. Plus, it was the only way I could actually get out of bed (and most importantly, post! ;)) In fact, I had some hot tea and scrambled eggs this morning! However, I don't want to be reaching for the Tylenol 3's like Tic Tacs. I do recall having strep throat once as a child. I just remember my throat feeling as if it was coated in shards of glass. Much like now.

Another symptom I forgot to mention early this morning- and one I am a little worried about. A swollen, puffy and reddish infected eye. Doesn't this just go from heinous to grody? My right eye is much better, but my left eye is swollen shut in the morning and requires a warm washcloth. This has me concerned.

Thank you so much for all of your tips! I really appreciate them. For those who are, or were ailing, too, big hugs! Please get well!

When I'm a little less loopy, I'll post more! Thank you again! :)

That was me last weekend. Last few days it felt like someone was sitting on my chest and it was hard to breathe. (Ain't asthma great?) My miracle cure is honey. Don't even need the tea. In a pinch, a big mug of hot water with as much honey as will dissolve helps loads. Honey honey honey.

I just started my vacation today and guess what?! I'm sick as well. Just not as sick as you are AllyShel, dear. My sister came down with strep throat and that has got me wondering if I'm next. I got this chest cold from my nephew (who's birthday is tomorrow! WOOHOO! He's 15! err, um UGH! He's 15! I feel so freakin OLD now! *sigh*). I should really consider giving him a swift kick for his birthday for being so generous with the cold! :p Anyways, you are so not alone in the recovery ward! Just hope you shake the disease quickly, my dear Ally! :coffee:
