It has nothing to do with the breed. It has to do with the fact that dog outweighs the baby at least 5:1 and could easily wrap his/her jaws around the babies head.

flippyshark 03-12-2009 01:05 PM

Elephants do look really smiley, which is surely one reason they are so lovable. Unfortunately, they even look smiley when they are being mistreated or exploited - a built in hazard of their natural physiognomy and our human tendency to anthropomorphize. ("See? He LIKES hauling timber!") That said, walking baby elephants around to visit with sea lions sounds like one of the best jobs imaginable. (I envy Ozron.)

One of our dragon enclosures is in our bedroom. That one has a couple in it. We quite often get to watch them mate (whether we want to or not).

I knew that dragons have two 'boy parts', but was never quite sure how the logistics of things worked until recently. It was actually rather impressive. Only one is used at a time, but how it does the job is what was interesting.

I miss picking out chicken for dinner.

Not really.

But I learned really quickly not to give any of them names.

Alex 03-24-2009 08:21 PM

Yeah, we had chickens (in the city) when I was growing up. My step-dad had trouble bringing himself to actually slaughter them so he let them get older and bigger than they should have been to actually taste very good. Then he finally did it and my mom and sisters couldn't bring themselves to eat them anyway so it ended up being a huge waste. Unsurprisingly I was unbothered by it all and just didn't think they tasted good (seriously, huge semi-old chickens do not taste good).

And eggs were great at first. Until you realize that even with a family of five eating a half dozen eggs day in and day out, rain or shine, just isn't going to happen.

So eventually we'd get behind on the eggs and the raccoons would kill the chickens to get at the eggs.

But they were fun.

We figured it was a birth defect. But it doesn't appeared to have had any impact on the kitteh

SzczerbiakManiac 03-26-2009 08:42 AM

Are there "toy" breeds of cats? I can see how a kitten-looking ye full grown cat would be very popular, but I have never seen or heard of such a thing.

Disneyphile 03-26-2009 10:51 AM

Those are probably "munchkin" cats, which are a special breed known for their short legs. Sadly, they can not jump like regular cats, so they are not good to have around other cats, because they've been known to get complexes as to why they can't do "normal" things like their housemates. They can seriously get depressed.

Wizard of Oz

I had to do it.

I have to add, major snaps to the person who created the costumes. Instantly recognizable, instantly iconic. I sent the original jpeg to an Oz nut friend of mine who howled like mad and called me to laugh some more.

madmonkeygirl 04-01-2009 05:20 PM

How freakin adorable well the costumes not the doggies though. The looks on their faces. Of course when i said i would dress Lucy and Ethel up like that CM replied back to me lol...

But Lucy has more clothes than i know what to do with now. Ethel has some sweaters and jackets but Lucy has tshirts as well as sweaters and jackets and she even has a sundress outfit.

I so need to get them bathing suits and PetSmart now has the little pools again for $8 for summer. So i need to get the pool for them and then swimsuits. :)

Agreed, but he looks resigned.

In addition to the obvious WHY factor, what strikes me is just how different two dogs who should look practically alike, actually do look from one another. Their faces are so expressive! Neither one is saying anything good, though.

Another sad thing about this photo is that my son did not recognize the flying monkeys! I am a failure. I know I have that DVD around here somewhere. Sheesh. That can't stand. He should join the ranks of every other kid who was freaked out by the monkeys swooping down out of the dark sky.

alphabassettgrrl 04-01-2009 06:07 PM

I like the little outfits!

Not Afraid 04-01-2009 06:48 PM

I actually have become quite fond of dogs in outfits. I've seen some gret outfits and I don't know why people are so repulsed by it. Thurston dressed the part of our Bolllywood party and he was my Gravedigger for Halloween. He doesn't wear clothes most of the time unless he needs them for protection - ie: cold, rain or heat.

€uroMeinke 04-01-2009 08:01 PM

Flying Monkeys! - that's awesome!
Of course if we could raise real flying monkeys there'd be no reason to dress the dogs up as such - that and laws preventing one from keeping children and midgets as pets.

Morrigoon 04-01-2009 08:10 PM

Small dogs get clothes for a reason. During cold snaps Barnum actually wants his sweater to go outside. Not so much here in CA as in Vegas and Dallas, of course, but it does happen.

And as long as we need to dress them up, why not in cute stuff? (From someone who would TOTALLY make the flying monkey outfit if I had anywhere near the skill.

madmonkeygirl 04-01-2009 08:25 PM

Cindy so would i. Lucy and Ethel would look adorable as flying monkeys. Gives me an idea for Halloween costume for them both lol...

Lucy gets cold rather easily more than Ethel does so for her sweaters and jackets in the winter are a must when visiting my parents especially. In the summer only thing i put on her to look cute is her sundress. :)

PetSmart has the doggie pool yet again> its just a kiddie pool for $8. I'm definitely going to get one and then get them bathing suits lol...for the fun of course....lol

Lucy likes to wear my build a bear outfits for my animals. :) She lets me put them on her.

Ghoulish Delight 04-01-2009 08:25 PM

It's the non consensual element that seems so wrong. Even if they're okay with the physical act of wearing the clothes, they can't possibly have a say in the costuming aspect and that just seems so demeaning to me.

madmonkeygirl 04-01-2009 08:26 PM

I would dress Lucy in my build a bear outfits and she'd go prancing out to show daddy what she's wearing proudly at that. If she didn't like it she would give me a hard time or act out or something. But she doesn't. Now Ethel on the other hand could care less.

It's not the outfits so much as the looks on the pet's faces. People who love pets know that they can tell when their pets are happy or sad. Some pets love wearing clothes, and it's obvious by their expression (and stance and attitude), but others do not.

When I see a sad pet, it's a bummer, no matter how adorable the clothes.

Not Afraid 04-02-2009 12:06 AM

The dogs in questions are Bostons. They always look like that.

Cadaverous Pallor 04-02-2009 08:42 AM

I'm not going to attempt to tell a petsitter and owner of a dozen animals what is and isn't a happy dog, or debate whether you can tell no matter what the breed is.

I'd have to agree in this one - this is just a photo, and on second look, because their ears are covered and they are sitting, looking up at the camera, it can be hard to tell whether they are happy or sad.

I will maintain, however, that if I am around a dog and they are wearing clothes, I can tell whether they are happy or sad about it. Thurston seems to not mind, or sometimes even enjoy it, which is why I have no problem with him walking around looking adorable.

We once had a friend who liked to put hats on his dog. The dog always whined pathetically and then took it off at the first possible chance. The owner kept putting it back on and scolding the dog for "bad behavior". It was a sad sight.

As someone who has put funny things on my rabbit to take a photo, and picked them up when they don't want to be, and continues to do such things - it's all part of pet ownership, and I totally dig that. Much the same way that Greg likes to tickle me or otherwise bug me. It's funny for a bit and then it's really annoying so he stops (or I seriously injure him).

I picked up Lito last night and held her for a bit. When she got too squirmy I went to put her down and she totally kicked me in the stomach. A rabbit can really hurt you, and herself, if she's pissed off. She then did what we call "pissed off kicks" as she ran back into her cage, which is a blatantly obvious way of saying she was mad at me. Yet I continue to pick her up every now and then, but not too often nor for too long, as a compromise between the cuddling I want and the freedom she wants.

The caveat is that I don't want to make her unhappy for very long, which is why in my view, costumes that strap on and stay on for hours should be on pets that enjoy it. In that case, they really are cute. :)

Alex 04-02-2009 08:55 AM

I don't care if the dog thinks it looks cute (though I doubt a dog is capable of such thoughts). It thinking -- by humans -- that animals wearing clothes is cute, that is completely foreign to me.

But so long as you aren't causing harm to the animal, it ultimately is none of my business what you do in the privacy of your bedroom, so to speak.

Though any canine/feline that is claimed to require clothing when outdoors in Southern California climates is an animal that should never have been bred into its crippled existence.

The socialization process of a pet is a difficult balance. You want to get them used to be touched, held, petted whatever but you don't want to get to the point where they have a negative view of being touched. It takes time and gentle awareness. We are going through this with Petra right now. She was probably completely feral when we found her on the road at 8 weeks. Although she was easy to handle while she was hurt, he became more feral n behavior again as she got well. She was VERY skitzy and has taken a LOT of work together somewhat socialized. Sh still doesn't like being touched too much, but we've been able to touch her for longer periods of time when we associate the touching with other things she likes such a playing her favorite games. She will never be cuddly, but she has already come a long way.

I've had many male pet rodents, and every one of them were rather, um... impressive.

I had to have my first pet mouse neutered though, because he sprayed like crazy and it would stink up the entire house, even with daily cage cleaning. The vet laughed since it was her first ever mouse neuter, but it worked! But all other male rodents I've had never had that problem. Mickey was apparently just very stinky and horny.

Alex 06-30-2009 11:24 AM

Cats shouldn't be on the kitchen counters.

Though with cheetahs I suppose you have to pick your battles.

Also, Lani will have to approve but I'll tentatively offer up Pixel as trade for two cheetahs.

Ghoulish Delight 06-30-2009 11:28 AM

The hard part is finding a big enough litter box.

Alex 06-30-2009 11:37 AM

Also, training them to not attack your toes under the sheet when you get into bed. That game grows less fun.

Ghoulish Delight 06-30-2009 11:39 AM

You'll probably also look back fondly on when all you had to worry about was an eviscerated mouse or bird on your livingroom floor.

I can't see how a lack of pigmentation would change one's genus & phylum, so I'm gonna say yes. ;)

I went to JC with a guy who was an albino "Black". His hair form (though definitely not color) and facial features were classic "African American" but he was whiter than I am.

Turn off all lights except the tank. Put the camera on a tripod, turn the ISO up, go into shutter priority mode and speed the shutter up. Play around with shutter speed, and the EV adjustment until you get a clear shot.

I got this email from a friend in VA yesterday:

Quote:

Hi Donna,

Thought I would share the events of the past 12 hours!

My brother called in a panic yesterday afternoon. He found a tiny little kitten on his patio in a box. The complex that he lives in has a feral cat population and he has been leaving food out for them. That's probably where this little guy came from. He begged me to come over and have a look at this little kitten. I stopped by Petsmart to get some kitten milk and when I arrived, I thought he was dead. He was totally dehydrated, his eyes were glazed over and unresponsive in every other way. He was just limp, and I told my brother that he might be too far gone.

ANYWAY, we warmed the kitty milk and put it in a tiny baby bottle and started force feeding him. I took him home and my husband and I have fed him around the clock and kept him warm and massaged him to keep the blood flowing. This morning he is alert but still not strong enough to take food on his own, but hungry and enjoying being warm. Our resident cats weren't too thrilled about him, but as he will be going back to my brother's once he is well enough, they won't be inconvenienced for too long. I feel like I have been up all night with a sick child! :) Yawn!!

We decided to call him Lucky Louie!

I emailed today to get a progress report:

Quote:

Louie lives another day. He kept us up last night, but we learned that he can use a litter box. He is also eating solid food...we added some kitty milk to some Iams kitten chow both wet and dry and he munched it down. My father is babysitting today...said he just ate half a bowl of food and then went over to the bathroom rug and peed and pooped...told Dad, he should have lifted him into the litterbox. He knows what to do in there...but he's only a few weeks old...still needs a little direction.
He is also purring....
More pics coming tomorrow.

I want Louie! He be so kyooote!

alphabassettgrrl 10-27-2009 02:33 PM

Lucky kittie indeed! Looks a lot like my kitty with those gorgeous brown stripes.

Perhaps if Kim Chi wore the outfit...

Ghoulish Delight 11-02-2009 05:05 PM

No. It is Nose-feratu!

Ghoulish Delight 11-05-2009 05:36 PM

Hamster + pencil = adorable fail (that would be a failure that is adorable, not a failure to be adorable).

Cadaverous Pallor 11-12-2009 09:06 AM

This must be crossposted. Auto-tune kittehs.

SzczerbiakManiac 11-17-2009 12:55 PM

I'll bet he's pupular* with the bitches!

*That was originally a typo, but I liked the pun so I kept it.

Ghoulish Delight 11-30-2009 03:05 PM

Suprised kitty is surprised (not to mention weapons-grade adorable)

flippyshark 11-30-2009 03:18 PM

I saw that yesterday and immediately started trying to teach my cats to do the same.

I wonder how long this trick will work with the tiny kitten in the video. Toward the end, it looked like he was getting ready to bite.

mousepod 11-30-2009 03:18 PM

I'm not a "cat person", but that video is wonderful.

SzczerbiakManiac 11-30-2009 03:23 PM

Ohmigawd GD, "weapons-grade adorable" I freaking love that phrase! I am so stealing it.

And the video was a terrific find too! :)

Snowflake 11-30-2009 03:25 PM

That video is incredibly cute, duly passed along to all my cat-friendly friends.

lashbear 11-30-2009 04:41 PM

I had to watch that twice, it was so cute !!

Not Afraid 11-30-2009 05:44 PM

Here are photos of our big Mufasa boy!

Checking the window:

Breaking the "no table tops" house rule:

And, showing his second best talent (next to hugging) - lounging:

Ghoulish Delight 12-01-2009 02:40 PM

He's a beauty :)

Snowflake 12-01-2009 03:09 PM

Awwwww, DP, he's adorable, and he knows it, too!

Disneyphile 12-01-2009 03:12 PM

Thanks. :) I still have to get Ken to take a photo of him hugging me. He still loves to hug and cuddle all the time. :)

Deebs 12-01-2009 03:50 PM

I love Mufasa!

Is there a "no platter" rule he is also breaking? Because he'd really be a rebel then. :D

Betty 12-01-2009 04:11 PM

Mufasa is beautiful. And he's not breaking the rule because he's actually in a platter and not directly ON the table - right?

I think you correctly guessed his little devious plan. ;)

Moonliner 12-01-2009 04:39 PM

Because sitting in the dishes is so much better than on the furniture....

Still you can't blame the guy. With that many mice on the table where else is a cat going to land?

Only thing better is sinks.

lashbear 12-01-2009 04:55 PM

What a cute guy !

alphabassettgrrl 12-01-2009 07:56 PM

Pretty kitty!!!!

wolfy999 12-01-2009 08:36 PM

The Wolfpack needs to meet Mufasa, maybe I'll bribe you with a plate of cookies?!

Not Afraid 12-01-2009 09:10 PM

I didn't realize he has blue eyes! He's a beauty!

Oh, and good luck with those "rules". :D

Kevy Baby 12-01-2009 11:14 PM

He is a big ol' lover boy!

ToriBear 12-02-2009 01:29 AM

Pictures of Sammy and one of Boris:

Here he is being cute while being very hyper under the Christmas tree:

Sammy lurking under the Christmas tree, trying to figure out whatever or not he should go attack Boris:

Boris unaware of Sammy thinking of killing him. (For being near me, Sammy is a very jealous cat!) :

Morrigoon 12-02-2009 02:23 AM

Wow, blue eyes on a non-Siamese!

Morrigoon 12-02-2009 02:25 AM

Melonballer 12-02-2009 02:33 AM

Since we are posting pictures of kitties under the Christmas tree here is an old picture of mine. This is my cat Puff. He loved hanging out under the tree at Christmas time.

Disneyphile 12-02-2009 09:07 AM

Mufasa's eyes are actually green, but they give off a bit of blue in certain light. And, they'll also look gold from a certain angle too. They're somewhat iridescent like peacock feathers. :)

Disneyphile 12-02-2009 11:06 AM

This is another reason why I love squirrels. ;)

Stan4dSteph 12-02-2009 07:51 PM

Gawd I wish I could have a big cat!

That wouldn't try to eat me.

And was toilet trained.

Not sure if the tag line that accompanied the pics that were sent to me is accurate, but the pics seem legit, so I opted to post these:

"A friend in Harrisburg has a cat who has a special friend that visits every morning. She finally took pics."

wolfy999 01-21-2010 05:35 PM

Awwww....how cute is that!?

Alex 01-21-2010 06:07 PM

Hmm...I read that sequence differently:

"Try as he might, Morris the cat was unable to kill and eat the deer. Eventually the deer gave up vegetarianism and began eating the cat, eyeballs first."

Defensive maneuver.

alphabassettgrrl 01-21-2010 06:48 PM

So cute! My cat does that same kind of "attack" to our dog.

Prudence 01-21-2010 07:36 PM

Ah! So cute! I want one for my kitties.

Not Afraid 01-21-2010 11:12 PM

Adoralbe! I'll take them both!

SzczerbiakManiac 01-25-2010 11:29 AM

Listen to the vocalizations of this baby gibbon.
Does it remind you a certain trash-can-like droid we all know and love?
