Man, I feel like such a doofus. How could I possibly have forgotten post #17887. There's only 24,111 of them. Color me embarrassed.

I just received this email {I receive a lot of the same but this one I actually responded to by sending a link to a Time magazine article on his life and achievements.....}

" AB 2567 has passed the California Assembly and the Senate
and is awaiting
Governor Schwarzenegger' s signature or veto. This bill
will set aside May
22nd as a special day to celebrate the life of homosexual
politician Harvey
Milk in the public schools. Harvey Milk will be honored in
the same manner
as our Founding Fathers and Martin Luther King, although
the only thing he
is actually known for is being proud be a homosexual! If
you haven't heard
about this bill it is because the liberal media is
downplaying this bill so
that it will pass.

PLEASE CALL GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER'S OFFICE POLL AND
MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD.
The Number to call is : 1 916-445-2841
Takes less than 30 seconds.
It is just a recording:
Press 1 for English.
Press 2 to voice an opinion
Press 1 for AB 2567 - Harvey Milk Day
pressing 2 is a NO vote.
Pl ease vote now!
Please pass this on to as many people as possible!"

This is from my father in law, I just recently responded to the final straw email about Obama {I didn't even respond to the one about Obama being the anti-christ} that we are dems and the response I got. Oye vey.

I wish I had the option to block his emails.....

ok, so since Im not at all knowledgeable about gay/lesbian culture (or any other kind really) or the political scene in SF (or any other kind really...wait, I already said that) is he such an iconic figure that he/his life would warrant a day of rememberance?

not for or against, its an honest question

Alex 09-25-2008 11:35 AM

If you consider the gay rights struggle to be of merit and cultural importance then I'd definitely say yes, he is worthy of some recognition.

And he isn't known primarily for being a proud homosexual. He is primarily known (outside of San Francisco) for being killed for being a proud homosexual.

But I would guess this particular bill is being driven by the upcoming movie (in which I didn't have much interest because of Sean Penn, but the trailer has changed my mind (and made Lani cry).

My English teacher was always on about not starting a sentence with a conjunction. Perhaps she had a point. Had my post been written as:

Yeah, I'm totally looking forward to it. I'm not a huge Sean Penn fan either, but it looks very good.

Alex leads a pretty stressful life. You would have been screwed either way.

I went and read the bill. I don't object to anything in it.

There is a section of the state Education statute that requires the governor each year to designate certain days as special and particularly of educational significance. Schools are then encouraged to integrate into the curriculum topics relevant to that date.

While I don't care that Harvey Milk was gay or if students are taught that the gay rights movement in California was a good thing, adding Milk to the list of existing dates does stick out a bit. Currently there are only three such dates:

April 6: California Poppy Day
April 21: John Muir Day
Second Wednesday in May: Teachers Day.

This will add a fourth:

May 22: Harvey Milk Day

So I can see an argument that with such a small list that Milk may not be the first person who should be added, but that is independent of what he did in life.

Since no stress was caused, I would have to say no.

Strictly speaking, the fun is not in the hiding. The fun is in tracking the percentage you find vs the ones you don't. Care to know your percentage to date?
