Sure, no problem! It's just a static discharge wire. It keeps you from sparking the gas fumes while fueling, which results in an exploding fire bomb in your car, which would be a bad thing.......

Or perhaps a mechanic should look at it just in case.

Cleaning the garage, getting readu for the garage sale of the century next weekend.

Mousey Girl 09-29-2007 10:52 PM

I am here, soon to be night night.

The Old People have made it home. It looks like their trip from hell (major issues with their motorhome) is not quite over. After having the 5th radiator replaced in Homer, Alaska, they are looking at #6. So this was a 2 radiator, 6 tires (all 4 on their Suzuki tow vehicle had to be replaced), a new transmission and some major electrical work type of trip. It was nice to see them both, but I am now trying to figure out when they got so old.

mousepod 09-29-2007 11:50 PM

Spent the afternoon/evening with H and her dad at some theme park. Finally found Nemo. Saw Jack, Sally et al in the Mansion. I'm home now, but ready to sleep...

wendybeth 09-30-2007 12:30 AM

Playing Far Cry on the Wii. Worked all day, then met Tori and her Grandma at the mall and had dinner at a very nice Asian restaurant, and then went shopping for fall clothes. Kid made out like a bandit, per usual.

Just got back from gaming. Found the kitty in the neighbor's front yard and brought her into the warmth. Now she's hiding in the kitchen.

Isn't there something just cool about a cat in the home? I love our doggies, but I can't live without our kitties. To me, a house just isn't a home without a cat. My doc is convinced I'm allergic to them, but I don't give a ****- I'll always have a cat or ten around as long as I'm on this planet.

Have you re-named the kitty?

Morrigoon 09-30-2007 01:21 AM

I'm the other way around... home isn't home without a dog (preferably dogs). I'm really not a cat person, but I've kind of taken to this particular cat. Feel bad for her.

wendybeth 09-30-2007 01:26 AM

You'll wind up feeling sorry for her so much that soon everything she does is gonna be the cutest thing you ever saw. Trust me- my sis always had a dog, until last year. She is sooooo in love with her kitty- the first she's ever had, excepting all the ones I brought home when we were young. Don't get me wrong- I love our puppies, but our kitties rule the roost.

Was at home unpacking and getting my AV set up with the help of a friend. Chilled, ate dinner, drank wine, watched a movie. Very relaxing evening. But so much fun.

Ooooh! Garage sale! Are you perhaps selling any kind of shelf pieces (like a baker's rack) or a large bird cage? Maybe a sofa that is in much better shape than ours?

BarTopDancer 09-30-2007 01:53 PM

Target has some nice shelf pieces on clearance right now. At least the one in RSM did. I bought this for $35.

What kind of sofa are you looking for and what is your price range?

alphabassettgrrl 09-30-2007 07:16 PM

So "Playhouse Disney" was cool to work this weekend. We beat their latest load-out time, too, which was cool. They had hoped for 2 hours, but we got the doors closed by 1 hour 30 minutes.

There were a couple of us singing the songs and dancing backstage. They're sort of used to it from me, but the other guy's kind of new and it was surprising. Cute, but seemingly out of character. That's ok. They had *really* cool costumes. The faces of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Tigger and Pooh were animated- mouths moved, eyes blinked, and the faces were soft flexible stuff.

So so cool. Expensive, and kind of touchy, but really cool.

And now I have a large beer to keep me company tonight. Yummy. Both dogs curled up on their pillows, a cat curled up next to me, and an evening to work on homework. Definitely needed.

I've been processing the break-up with the girl. Oddly, I think we wanted the same things out of the relationship, but it just wasn't possible. She wasn't getting what she wanted, but I wasn't either, though I was unwilling to admit it. There was so much I wanted to give her, and the distance was a larger factor than I thought it would be. Sadly it was right to end.

Plus, the fact that without having met my hubby, I'd probably *be* her in a lot of ways right now. The break-up trauma catapulted me into dealing a bit with my "coming-up to 40" personal re-assessment crisis. Not a lot, but a bit. I think there's a lot coming up, but there's a little bit done. I'm just feeling kind of lost and blind right now. It's not something I like. At least at work I was feeling like my old self; skipping across the stage and bounding up the stairs felt like me. The folks at work know to gauge me and how well I'm feeling by how nutty I am; I like that. And today I was feeling pretty good. Bout darn time, I say.

I've been processing with the help of the music from "Wicked" and I think I'm finally ready to let it go some. I'll see the musical again in November with some of the guys from work, which will be cool, and we're taking the backstage tour. I'm such a geek, because I can hardly wait to see it.

But I'm ok with my inner geek. She sort of knows how to be happy.

Betty 09-30-2007 07:59 PM

Had another fabulous day off roading up in big bear. We've now seen 2 of the fire tower lookouts. did you know that you can rent one of them for the night? No cooking in it. No electricity and the bathroom is down a very steep narrow ladder type of stairs...

but the view! Wow! In practically all directions, it was just incredible. On a clear day, I read, you can see Catalina! Now, we've seen Catalina from the top of Saddleback Mountain - but all the way from Big Bear. I can see the direction it would be - but it was overcast with a morning marine layer.

We now need to go visit all the fire watch towers in the area as well as drive from the bottom of the mountain near the 18 all the way up to Big Bear City without going on a regular road. I think maybe next weekend if we can get away with it. :)

Such fun!

Got a little bit of hiking in today as well. Yay Jeep!

BarTopDancer 09-30-2007 08:10 PM

If I quit procrastinating and just did my homework I would have been done with it a long time ago.

I haven't but it looks like it would be fun. Nice views, but it sure looks naked after the fire burned all the brush away from it.

Query:

Do you really want to work for some place that says "you have been selected for a callback interview. It is at this date and time. If you can not come at that time, it will not be rescheduled."?

And it's not like they gave lots of notice. Apparently we're all 22 with no real job or obligations and we can be wherever whenever they want. It's not even some place I really want to work, just some place I figured I could get a job if all else failed and I was desperate. I'd rather work for the firm in Yakima than work for these people.

I do make killer stews and soups. My specialties are beef stew, 16 bean soup and pea soup.

Now that it is just us I have found myself cooking more.

I bought a daybed from Craig's List today and just got done setting it up in the office. The room is so much larger now! However, our cleanish garage now contains 2 desks, a queen bed and a mission style headboard. It's not clean any longer. It's time to do a little selling on Craig's List.

I don't follow a recipe. I buy the pack of beans and cook down some ham bones, use the juice and add a bunch of spices, whatever I feel like grabbing at the time. The beans come with a flavor packet, but I usually toss it out.

Damnit, I can't find the original exact quote from Andy Richter Controls the Universe, but it was something along the lines of:

"We want real utensils in the break room. No more sporks, spknives, and knifeoons! It's like a Dr. Seuss kitchen in there!"

I'm not sure, but I believe the exact quote is something like:

Disneyphile 10-02-2007 05:56 PM

I'm still scared ****less.

The producer told me to "stretch it" a bit, but I'm just so damned honest about what I've done and haven't done.

This is a big challenge for me. I don't want to be one of those Hollywood primadonnas that act like they know everything, throwing their own names around.

So far, the first draft really touches on my field experience and current projects. But, it really lacks some luster. I'm trying to figure out how to make myself sound more exciting.

I really hope this show gets signed though. I'll earn about $15K per episode, and there are already 26 episodes written. Doing the math, I'd be a really, really, really, really, really, really, really, happy camper. ;)

I can top that

We're standing in the liqour store yesterday and the boy says

" Why did the Mexican throw his wife off the cliff?'
" I don't know why?", with a funny look on my face, as I look around us
"Tequila, get it to kill ya"

I said we'll talk in the car. So I ask where he heard that one and he says he just made it up:eek: We then have a long talk about prejudice and jokes, ugh!

I have to admit, for off the top of his head it was creative but it was not the proper place or time I guess for this old mom!

I hope you get signed, too!!!! I want to see your name on my screen! Then I can brag about how I actually do know you. :) My friend, the famous person.

What would be your title? :) T, ruler of everything? :)

scared ****less just means you're taking it seriously. good first step

and 'stretch it' is actually pretty easy and still being totally honest. you just need to change a bit of terminology

"I've dreamed about doing x projects"
in stretch speak "I have several projects currently in the early stages of development (give your thoughts)"
Not a lie. all projects start as an idea. elaborate on those and youre golden

This is a big challenge for me. I don't want to be one of those Hollywood primadonnas that act like they know everything, throwing their own names around.

So far, the first draft really touches on my field experience and current projects. But, it really lacks some luster. I'm trying to figure out how to make myself sound more exciting.

I bought new jeans tonight. I know, big Whoop, but it is too me. I was afraid of Lane Giant's new sizing system, but I seem to be one of those that it really works for!!

I have been dealing with shorts falling off, skirts hanging too low, last night I got my jeans off without undoing them first. It was time to "downsize."

It's scary, frightening, and exhilarating all at the same time. However, while I'm busy, promo work doesn't pay anything, so we're still dirt poor. I've even considered applying for porn jobs (shooting and/or editing) just for the money.... ok, and the thrill. ;) But, hard work now can pay off later, so I'm keeping the faith, as well as my nose to the grindstone. :)

Should the show be picked up, things will happen very quickly, so depending on the schedule, I might need a team. Thankfully, I do know a couple editors ( ;) ), another cameraperson, and even a voice-over artist, so I can help others out too. And, should this go up for an Emmy (hey, it can happen, as it has to other people), it'd be fun as hell to have friends on the red carpet with me. :D

Anyway, be ready to laugh. Here's the completed bio, as revised by the producer. Nothing is a lie, but it is pretty "polished".

Behold my shiny! (Put behind spoilers, because it's kinda large.)

Spoiler:
Quote:

With a passion that began during her early childhood in Las Vegas, Nevada, Teresa developed the drive and creative force to bring the best professional vision to any project.

She has numerous years of professional camera and editing experience, specializing in both studio and location environments. From corporate training videos, to live news, scripted series, commercials, and promotional projects, Teresa’s skills offer a polished and refined touch.

With one of the steadiest camera hands in the business, she brings a smooth approach to ENG style shoots, and an extremely high coverage ratio, thanks to her energetic work ethic.

Teresa has a very creative mind with the keenest eye for detail, perfecting her edits down to every single frame. She takes pride in striving for the best possible product, never accepting anything less. Her disclipline can be accredited to years of personal theatrical instruction by the late Maceo Anderson (“The Cotton Club”) and late Jon Gregory (“King’s Rhapsody”), who always stressed to her the importance of passion and dedication to bring only the very best to audiences, with no excuses.

Teresa started directing and shooting 22 years ago. By the age of 18, she was hired to shoot a promotional music video for a local band, of which she accomplished a live finish by using the on-camera effects in perfect time with the music. One of the band members was a local news cameraman and was amazed at Teresa’s natural talents, and suggested that she look for fulltime work within the television field.

Taking that advice, she moved to Quad Cities, Illinois to seek immediate employment within a small market. She was instantly hired by the local NBC affiliate, and after a year was offered a much higher salary and position by WQAD, the local ABC affiliate. Her continuous exceptional creativity and passion at WQAD earned her the offer of Promotions Producer within a year, at which time she chose to relocate her talents to Hollywood, being sought after by various television and private entities over the last eight years.

Her most recent projects have included live sports coverage for a local network, two commercials and product training videos, complete with DVD authoring and package designs.

While comfortable on just about any camera, Teresa owns two professional Canon XL series standard definition cameras, various lighting kits, a professional microphone system, and specializes in editing and motion effects with Final Cut Studio 2 on her 8-Core Mac Pro.

With the high demand for only the best quality in entertainment, viewers can experience the passion and excitement that is displayed through Teresa’s work.

It's seriously not too hokey? I read it and cringe a bit, but the producer loves it, and so does Ken.

Then again, we are our own worst critics...

But, note how it kinda leaves out my 6-year hiatus at the ol' bank job. However, I did still play around with cameras and editing during that time.

So, Monday night I had a dream that my co-worker, who also wants desperately to find a new job, got an interview. I told her this yesterday afternoon, and less than two hours later she called to say that she'd just landed an interview. I'm feeling mighty prophetic at the moment.

Snowflake 10-03-2007 09:56 AM

What does the future hold for me, Pru?

Disneyphile 10-03-2007 09:58 AM

Hey, Pru... I'll go buy a lottery ticket and split it with ya. Just gimme some numbers. ;)

alphabassettgrrl 10-03-2007 10:14 AM

DP, I see a couple of places to tighten it up, but on the whole it looks great!

So Pru, when are you going to dream about (and then get) your dream job? :)

Prudence 10-03-2007 10:40 AM

Snowflake: I just this morning had a discussion with my mother about one of her class projects that references Valentino's character in "The Sheik". What this is prophetic of, I'm not sure, but since you're working on your book I figure it's a sign of future demand.

DP: apparently I am incapable of foreseeing anything from which I might benefit. If you had asked for lottery numbers for yourself only.....:p

alphabassettgrrl: See previous answer for my inability to dream up good stuff for myself. Apparently I am limited to dreaming up good stuff for others and hoping others will return the favor. Which means it's your job to dream up my dream job! :D

alphabassettgrrl 10-03-2007 02:46 PM

Ok, Pru, I'll let you know! :)

No. I am saying if I don't have a hockey game, it's not somewhere where I will be out super late (being a school night) and I get my homework done I am in. Especially if we are hiding bodies and lighting things on fire. She wanted to know availability and I don't have anything else going on [other than those 3 things].

Does this mean easter bunnies will be out in January? if so, the only good result would be that by easter time, the peeps would be sufficiently stale enough to eat!

Ghoulish Delight 10-04-2007 08:37 AM

Aaaaargh!

So we're going to Chicago and the Cubs are in the playoffs. I already missed the day that the tickets for the first playoff series went on sale a couple weeks ago. Of course, the odds of any of the games being in Chicago on the dates we're there were slim for this series, so not a big loss.

But today, tickets for the second series go on sale. It's a bit of a crap shoot as the 2 things have to happen. 1) The Cubs have to win the first series against the D-backs. 2) The schedule has to line up (and it depends who their opponent is) such that the first Chicago home game of the series is on one of the days we're in Chicago . But in case 1, we'd get a refund and in case 2 we could sell the tickets no problem (probably for a profit).

So tickets go on sale at 10AM. The way it works is, 30 minutes before 10, you can enter a "virtual waiting room". At 10:00, they start randomly picking people who are logged into the waiting room to buy tickets. I have a meeting at 10, so I had worked out a deal with a coworker to finish the transaction for me while I'm in the meeting.

At 8:15 I went to the site to double check the procedure...and I see, "Tickets On Sale Now"!!!!!!

10AM....central time! I'm so angry at myself right now.

I've logged into the waiting room. I'm guessing that means tickets aren't yet completely sold out for all the games or else they probably wouldn't even let me get that far. But who knows if I'll ever get out of the waiting room at this point.

Hell.

Oh well, time to root for the Cubs to not make it into the second round so I can feel better.

ETA: And there you have it, the message "Only scatterd singles available for Games 1 and 2." just popped up. Games 1 and 2 are the only games that stand a chance of being in Chicago while we're there, so that's that. Unless I want to pay insane scalper prices, no Wrigley Field game for us. So....mad....at....myself.

Yeah, but there's a difference between fixing and building. I'm a builder, not so much a fixer.

Reminds me... I have some curtains I want to hang in my living room. I know it needs to be screwed into the wall, but my question is, does it require wall anchors? I mean, do I need a drill for this?

Yes, they will need wall anchors. They have them at home depot. There are several different designs, some of them screw into the drywall using a screwdriver, so no drill is necessary.

Capt Jack 10-04-2007 01:43 PM

a lot depends on the weight they'll be holding. sheers + rod and such, yeah a wood screw works fine. vertical blinds, floor length drapes and anything with some real substance, I would strongly reccomend anchors and a wall stud as its not just the weight, but often wind resistance from moving air

Snowflake 10-04-2007 01:51 PM

Okay, what do you do if the wall is an outside wall? Since I rent, I've always been iffy about drilling holes. That said, I do want to get some kind of window treatment work done in my bedroom, the walls are outer walls (concrete & brick).

Any suggestions or thoughts? I don't really want to do blinds, or if I do, I still want some kind of rod and curtains to make it look nice.

Kevy Baby 10-04-2007 01:56 PM

If you buy a $50 mitre saw or a $50 drill press, you will get a $50 mitre saw or a $50 drill press. It is off brand and it is TOO cheap. Either item will be totally inaccurate and inconsistent.

Just my $0.02

(admittedly, gotta get the bridge replaced, I didn't do so well trying to set it myself)

I think once was enough already. :p

Well, our move-in date is pushed back to the 11th now. They're a little behind, but they are really taking the time to do it right. They're even installing granite counter tops! :snap:

It also turns out that we do have a small in-wall A/C unit that they have had cleaned and serviced, and it works really well.

Our new home is almost a reality! And, it's going to be all new! :D

We're excited.

I've been on hold with the pediatrician's office for 20 minutes now and counting. I realize they're busy and all but anything over 5-10 mins is a little silly. Just to talk to the nurse for goodness sakes.

Wha?

Not Afraid 10-05-2007 09:24 AM

OK. Here's the Chihuahua story (cross post).

I rescued a Chihuahua today. He's at our house. He's older than the hills and he may be coming with us to PS because, I don't know what else to do with him. He's very quite and sedate. Either that or he's barely alive. Mrs. Pod named him Abe. Ms. BunBuns also arrive this evening for an extended stay while Mom and Dad are traveling Eastward. She's already adorable and has the cats quite in line. Outside, Bodi - the cat across the street came to visit and a opossum was hanging out in our tree by the porch. I think the universe is telling me I need to be Snow White for Halloween.

Basically, the Chi was abandoned several weeks ago. He's been living outside and eating cat food for 2 weeks or more. Knowing that Chi's aren't really dogs of the wild, I rescued him yesterday. I took him to the vet. He's a bit malnourished and very dirty but otherwise in good health - for a 16 year old chihuahua. I'm not sure what's going to happen next. He weighs 3.8 pounds. He slept in a crate last night with food and water and a comfy bed. He thinks he's found Nirvana. He's completely house trained and very calm and loving. But, he needs a bath in a big way.

Sooooo, another animal saga for me.

NA, you are an animal whisperer, absolutely!

Poor Abe, makes me think ill of the poeple who abandoned him.

Not Afraid 10-05-2007 10:12 AM

I have a feeling Abe was owned by an elderly person in the area who died. Or, that's my back story. He's attracted to women, so I suspect it was an older woman who owned him. He may have been abandoned or put out when she either died or was put in a home. This is all speculation of course.

The vet took him in at the very last minute. This isn't even my normal vet but one who was open at 6:00 at night. He's about to get a bath. Hopefully he will survive.

wendybeth 10-06-2007 12:40 AM

Have fun, LS!

Sooo...lately, some rather disquieting things have been happening with my MIL. About a month ago, she started losing things- important things. House, keys, a Visa card, eyeglasses, a watch she really likes, a $200 money order....all in the space of a week. I thought maybe her thyroid was off, so I insisted she go to her doc, and it turns out she has developed type II diabetes. She seems to have really taken this seriously and begun some real diet modifications, and so I thought perhaps this 'losing streak' was over. Well, tonight she kind of got weird over something really dumb: we have a utensil vase on our counter that's been there for years, one in which we place large spoons, spatulas, etc. We were in the kitchen tonight and she looked at it and said "Where has that been?" I was puzzled, and I said "The utensil thing? It's where it always is- why?" She seemed kind of flustered and said that when she put dishes away today she couldn't find it, so she had to put one of the utensils in a drawer- something that is ordinarily no big deal, but for some reason she was really defensive about it. I tried to shrug it off, saying that it had been there the whole time but she probably couldn't tell from all the clutter on the counter, but she was adamant that it had not been there earlier in the day. I could tell it was really bothering her, so I tried to put her at ease by just saying no big deal, but she started to seem kind of suspicious. I was a bit offended and I told her I really doubted anyone was messing with her, but she just sort of strode away saying "It wasn't there..I know it wasn't..."

****. I'm not stupid- I know that losing things, paranoia and forgetting things add up when someone is 72, but I'm really hoping it's just something else. I might add that a year ago she was hallucinating about spiders in her room, but we attributed that to a medication side-effect. She seems so with it most of the time, but when I think about it she spends a lot of time looking for **** she's lost or trying to get up the energy to get off the couch. As with any situation, there are a lot more incidents besides these that I find alarming, but I feel like things are speeding up and I need to be a little bit more proactive, something that is difficult to do in the Anderson (tuck you head in the sand and all will be well) Clan.

My least favorite Phantom ever. Well, until Gerard Butler.

Good singer, but distractingly operatic for Phantom, which requires a more hypnotic sound.

Still, always nice to deal with nice people.

They must be related to the Chapman Clan!

I understand what you're saying, my MIL had the same kind of issues a couple of years ago. We ended up with her in the hospital with a brain infection, diabetes, high blood pressure and a myriad of maladies. The worst part with her was she wasn't actually losing everything, some stuff she gave away... like her Home Depot card which they ran up as far as they could!!

I really hope this isn't what I have to look forward to when we get older;)

Good luck and keep trying to work with the Dr, no matter how much she balks. I think we waited to long and it has been an uphill bettle ever since!

I can relate to the issues with the Old People. My dad's behavior has gotten increasingly erratic. He is an alchoholic, has finally beein diagnose with diabetes and has 4 or 5 stints in his arteries. He also has problems with the arteries in his legs, but they decided against getting anything done about it.

He has been crankier than normal, and his outbursts getting worse. I told my mom that I am thinking he has the onset of dimentia (I ruled out Alztheimers). She finally confessed that she thought so too, but doesn't want to think about it.

She has her own set of health issues to deal with. I just wish she would take better care of herself because when she is really sick, or falls, or her blood sugar drops because she doesn't have time to eat, it directly affects me. For some odd reason, that I don't understand, I have some sort of (psychicish) connection to her. I always have. When she hurts I get sick. Most recently, when they were still in B.C. she fell. I was fine. We talked on the phone that night, she never mentioned she fell, but as soon as we hung up I was feverish, dizzier than normal, my hips really ached, just strangly sick. It wasn't until we talked 2 days later, after my illness went away as fast as it hit, that she confessed to have had a dizzy spell and fell straight back, bruising her butt.

Well, it is official. Chicken is a hen! She laid 2 eggs today.
I had a feeling something was up. I found her in the garage this morning. She had pushed the door open. I shooed her out. She then started whining at the back door. I went back out and she was in her cage in the pen. I went back out an hour later and there were 2 eggs. One is flesh colored and the other is a pinkish brown.

Prudence 10-07-2007 01:21 PM

How big are the eggs? Fresh eggs are so tasty.

Thanks, Snow- actually, we just talked about it and she's concerned as well. We may have to get a different doc though; when she told her doc about some weird hallucinations she was having last year he just laughed it off and told her he wouldn't tell anybody. Asshole. Hopefully, this is just residual stuff happening due to her recent diabetes ll diagnosis, but we agreed to get things checked out if anything else happens.

As far as the artwork- Tori's done lots more, but I need to take pics of some of it and scan them as they are too large to fit into the printer/scanner thingy.

MG- too cool! I think I'd be kind of weirded out eating them as well, although I don't know why. I like eggs. Maybe I just like eggs from anonymous chickens.

I understand. It would be different if you had a hen house full of hens, and supplying you with eggs is their job. The few eggs she will be supplying won't make much difference, unless they are particularly tasty.

On the other hand, one way to use them (If you don't want to waste them) is to use them in something like a cake, pancakes, or other baked good where you can't tell they are there.

But, as mentioned before, if they are not fertile, they're not really her chicks. Eating them isn't much different than using her droppings in the garden to grow veggies.

Besides, you feed her and give her a home. Everyone should pull their weight and help out. That could be her contibution.

Yes, it was wonderful that he was so nice. His timing was a little different than I otherwise expected but it's ok. I enjoyed it anyway. :)

She finally confessed that she thought so too, but doesn't want to think about it.

It's hard to motivate people who just want to avoid the issue. You know facing it is necessary, and I hope your mom can deal with it reasonably soon. I'm not sure what they can do about Alzheimer's, but if it's truly something along those lines, you need to know about it so you know not to give him valuable things that he'll lose (like his wallet). It's also easier to handle dealing with his odd behavior if you know the reason behind it.

I hope your parents take care of themselves.

Don't feel bad about using her eggs- they won't hatch, and she really has no use for them other than hatching baby chicks. I worked with a guy who has chickens, and the eggs are better than what they could buy in a store.

Besides, you'll know her eggs come from a healthy chicken, unlike what you buy.

The thing with the eggs falls along the lines of me refusing to drink fresh milk. We would get milk directly from the dairy, or when my mom was milking a neighbors cow, and I would not touch it.

I told her I would save the eggs for her. She told me that I wasn't much of a farmer if I refused to eat the eggs and what was I doing having a chicken. I told her Chicken is a pet and she was NOT my idea.

Ethically, eggs and milk do not (intrinsically) harm the animal. Even a pet can produce; if it were something that harmed the animal it would be a different issue.

But if it causes problems for you, then you should pass on them.

Strangler Lewis 10-08-2007 04:33 AM

It doesn't sound like an ethical issue. It sounds like it's just a little too earthy for comfort.

RStar 10-08-2007 06:59 AM

I've often wondered if I could raise an animal and then butcher and eat it. Not sure I could. I raise fruits and veggies and eat them. Milk and eggs I think I could do, but the meat may be going too far for me. To each his own, though. Do what you are comfortable with.

Snowflake 10-08-2007 07:50 AM

How is it possible that it is Monday already and I'm at work?

Morrigoon 10-08-2007 10:30 AM

Well, you see, the earth rotates on an axis. It takes 24 hours for the earth to complete each rotation. As it does this, most spots on the earth's surface (depending on the time of year) pass through areas exposed to and hidden from the sun. This is how we denote the passage of each 24-hour period. When 3 dark periods and 2 sunny periods follow leaving work on Friday night, the following sunny period is what we call Monday morning, which happens to coincide with the time you are expected to return to your place of employment.

Aren't you glad you asked?

Somehow your answer makes me feel better, and my trip to Starbucks helped, too!

Though, don't be fooled, it's not sunny here, very very foggy as a matter of fact.

I can only eat eggs if they are in something or I don't think about what they really are. I don't like milk.

The whole concept of eggs, and milk grosses me out. Then again that is how I went vegetarian a few years back. I thought about what I was eating.

I am indeed - I will be at the DLR Friday - Tuesday, beelzeboobs and all. We're meeting up with some people for the Halloween Hootenanny on Friday, some random frivolity and dinner on Saturday, and MA frenzy and post-MA lounging-about-not-moving on Sunday. Anyone who wants the chance to bask in my presence and hasn't already made arrangements should consider sending me a PM post-haste.

Meanwhile - in today's episode of "Students doing Strange Things Outside Pru's Window" there is a cluster of young-uns engaged in some kind of organized activity that frankly looks like a slightly urbanized chicken dance.

alphabassettgrrl 10-08-2007 02:39 PM

Enjoy your trip! I wish I could come watch the frenzy and hang out with you but that's (once again) not in the cards.

Disneyphile 10-08-2007 02:59 PM

We'll try to stop by on Sunday, but no promises, since we're starting our move this weekend.

Mousey Girl 10-08-2007 03:22 PM

Nick and I just got home to find a very injured Chicken. She is missing clumps of feathers and skin off of her back. I really don't think that Pooh did it. He is too protective of her. right now she is enclosed in her pen with fresh food & water. Tonight I will start dousing her back with antiseptic. David said that he would take her for the weekend if we needed him to watch her while we are at DLR.

I really can't think of Pooh doing it. When he came over while I was petting her and moving her into the pen he came over and she was not afraid of him. We have a LOT of feral cats in the neighborhood, along with predatory birds. It could have been another dog, but I didn't see how it could have gotten through the fence and back without a hole...

I am just sick.

I am hoping she will survive this, if not Nickolas is aware that we might have to have her put down.

alphabassettgrrl 10-08-2007 03:31 PM

OOoohhh, poor Chicken. I hope she makes it.

cirquelover 10-08-2007 03:31 PM

I'm so sorry MG! It could have been feral cats or some other wild critter, it's hard to tell. The poor little thing. I hope she can recover, be careful of infections.
I know you two were looking forward to your weekend away at DLR. I hope you are still able to enjoy it and relax a little. I'm kind of shocked that David said he would take her, maybe he's not a total...
I'm sending healing vibes for all of you, take care.

It was a ****ing HAWK!!! I was sitting outside, smoking, before heading back to work and I saw a big bird land in the tree, it is a ****ing HAWK!! Nickolas was right, not our dog.

David said that he would take her, that way Nick can still see her, but she would be safe.

Disneyphile 10-08-2007 03:40 PM

Aw!!! I'm sorry, MG!

Prudence 10-08-2007 03:55 PM

Poor Chicken! I hope she recovers and provides you with many more eggs for you to ponder.

alphabassettgrrl 10-08-2007 04:34 PM

A hawk in a residential area? Wow. Then again, we had an owl here taking out cats for a while.

May Chicken be safe and healthy, and pull through this.

Morrigoon 10-08-2007 04:37 PM

Poor chicken! Figures it would be a hawk. They can really be a menace to small pets.

Mousey Girl 10-08-2007 06:54 PM

She is not happy to be confined to her pen. I sprayed her with some bactine, to help with pain and an antiseptic. Afterwards, she promptly ate all her grapes.
I will feel much better about everything if she makes it through the night.
Nick and I will take her to David's thursday when I get off of work.

I called out neighbor on my way back to work. She has 2 doxies (doggie, but I can't spell it out) and one is small enough to be bird chow. She said when she got home every dog in the area was sounding off and over the din she heard a screech.

*sigh*

On a side note, I am buying new batteries for my beaded light up necklace and I made my pin lanyard...it be Pirate themed it be. argh!!!
All I have left is putting the stripes on Boy's jacket.

Nephythys 10-08-2007 06:56 PM

Poor Chicken- she must have fought bravely to not get carried away when she was attacked.

I hope she will be ok-

Morrigoon 10-08-2007 09:55 PM

Yeah, I'm not sure I want to meet this chicken that can fight off a hawk, heheh. Good Chicken :)

Poor chicken! I hope she will be ok! Wow!

I can't help but think of Foghorn Leghorn and Chickenhawk, the Warner Bros. cartoon. That Chicken Hawk tried everything, but that chicken was just too smart. Oh, he took his lumps once in a while, but he came out alright. I hope this same outcome will happen here.

Good luck MG!

Not Afraid 10-09-2007 12:14 AM

Poor Chicken! I hope she recovers.

We're back from Palm Springs. Tired, relaxed and with a house (or zoo) full of critters. Bunnybuns (Munchkin) is doing great and is very happy. The cats are excited to see us and our latest addition is also doing MUCH better.

His name is now Itty Bitty Abe Vigoda. We took him to PS with us and he was pampered to death, er, life by a bunch of LoTters. He's quite a good little puppy, but terribly malnourished.

Besides his name, he has a Title - The Worlds Smallest Hedonist. So, his full name is Itty Bitty Abe Vigoda - the World's Smallest Hedonist - which is a name that is about twice as big as he is. He got his title because we were all eating bacon on Sunday morning (duh!) and he wobbled out and sat there looking longingly at us. We fed him small bits of bacon and he perked right up!

He's still tiny and doesn't really like dog food (and keeps wondering where the bacon is). But, he seems to be on the road to a bit more health. (I hope). He doesn't bark, he's completely potty trained, and he's incredibly docile and sweet. The cats don't seem to mind him too much either. i think he's going to live out his remaining days or years in the Swank Hotel for Homeless Animals.

There were many pictures taken of him this weekend. I'm sure some will appear soon.

Morrigoon 10-09-2007 12:44 AM

Awwww....!

Mousey Girl 10-09-2007 06:20 AM

Chicken survived the night. Pooh slept in the chair in front of her pen. He is still moping. I really think he played a big part in her survival.

We aren't going to take her to David's. Both Nick and my sister expressed concerns that the monster children won't leave her alone. I also don't want to add to her stress by moving her. She is perfectly safe in her pen, and it is somewhere she is comfortable being. I will probably end up picking up the garage so that she will eventually be able to have more room. I am also going to call some wildlife people today to find out if it was a red-tailed hawk or some sort of falcon and what can be done about it.

It feels like for every step forward I get slammed 2 back.

I am truly looking forward to having a hedonistic weekend.

Disneyphile 10-09-2007 09:29 AM

Yay for Chicken pulling through! I love your stories about her and Pooh. They're like little kids with feathers and fur. :)

So... I do wish I was still in the desert and could just jump in the pool right now and dry off in the desert sun. As it is, I'm glad I had the foresight to take this day off and am hoping that my phone won't ring and change that.

Disneyphile 10-09-2007 10:50 AM

At least clean-up is easy.

Morrigoon 10-09-2007 10:54 AM

Just called the Boy to let him know there's a cat somewhere in our house.

She wasn't around last night, but this morning I found her in her favorite spot behind the neighbor's bushes. She knows now when I go out and walk Barnum, and I call for her, that if she gets up she'll be fed. But, being a cat, she can't just get up when I call her. She waited until after I went back in with Barnum, and when I was headed out the door (on time, naturally), there she was, waiting to be let in and fed. So I did, waited while she ate, expecting she'd leave with me. No sir. She was like "F*** you, it's cold out there!" and ran up the stairs. I imagine she's still hiding in the red room somewhere.

Capt Jack 10-09-2007 10:58 AM

I barely even went in the pools...in fact only the hot tub and still, put me down as Palm Springs dreamin' as well. the quiet and company alone was well worth any small amount of effort I put in...which was to say the least, the least. :)

and yes, my house was indeed as disappointing as I knew it would be after such uber swank accomodations. it does however have me (somewhat) motivated to change that.

Mousey Girl 10-09-2007 03:10 PM

Chicken let us treat her and pet her for a bit. It looks like she ate, or the **** birds came in and snacked on her seed.

I talked to an animal curator at C.A.L.M. he confirmed that it was a red-tailed hawk. I explained to Nick that it would not be going away any time soon. I also got waaaay more information on its feeding habits and attack patterns than I needed to hear.

Nick has agreed that once she is healed we will see about shipping to Tehachapi, to a friend of my sister who raises the same breed of chicken. She will have a coop to sleep in and a yard to roam in, just like here. He feels that even though he won't get to see her very often she would be better off there than at his dad's house.

In the meantime, injured as she is, she laid another egg.

Disneyphile 10-09-2007 03:47 PM

Argh. Looks like our move is delayed again.

I'm appreciative that they're taking the time to do things right, but I'm tired of constantly calling the utilities to change the appointments. And, I'm scheduled for jury duty next week, so if I get picked, I lose all that time, not to mention my approaching client deadlines.

I'm now waiting for the owner to call me back after he gets in touch with the contractors for an ETA.

Morrigoon 10-09-2007 03:50 PM

Maybe it's just me, but I'd call moving day a hardship.

Disneyphile 10-09-2007 03:55 PM

Not only that, but I have a few things due next week, and I also have a doctor's appointment as well.

Trying to convince judges of "hardships" is nearly futile though.

If I call up on Friday night, and they want me to report, I'll just sit during the selection process and not pay attention. I'm sure after I say, "Um, could you repeat that again?" a few times, they'll get annoyed with me. If anything, the attorneys will dismiss me, because they won't want to deal with that.

Morrigoon 10-09-2007 03:57 PM

But if you get to wait all day in the holding room, at least you can have your laptop with you.

katiesue 10-09-2007 03:58 PM

Can't you delay it? In San Diego you can delay up to I think three different times. They want you to have a clear two weeks to serve, just in case. The last case I got called for the judge wasn't letting anyone out for anything. Luckily I didn't get picked as it was a gruesome murder case and ended up in a mistrial which would have sucked.

Capt Jack 10-09-2007 04:03 PM

DP, tell them that when you go for jury duty. the jury selections Ive been to really would rather you not be there if you're going to constantly have your mind on something else and arent such buttheads to make you stay unless they feel like youre trying to con them.

I did something similar not so long ago. needed to work on a highly volitile project deadline at work. told them straight up I needed to during their initial questioning. "I'll of course stay if you need me to, but thought I should put that out there as I really do need to be somewhere else...it just means I have to work late after I leave here."

they were very understanding and I was the first one released.
bring some of your paperwork for the move with you as a wee bit of backup, just in case.

BarTopDancer 10-09-2007 04:04 PM

You can delay it. It should be on the jury duty sheet.

I used to get called in the middle of the semester. I kept getting it delayed and told them to call me during the off months. Like clockwork I would be called to report during the semester.

Once I didn't even get the JD notice. I got a notice that said I failed to appear and my time was rescheduled. I panicked and called in and they said not to worry, nothing bad would happen the first time I did that. ;)

Disneyphile 10-09-2007 04:12 PM

Sadly, I'm not "allowed" another postponement. This was the last one, thanks to our wedding last year, and then some illness and then my heavy-duty work over this summer.

I just emailed them though, requesting a 4-week postponement, otherwise, I can't even guarantee I'll pay attention from not having any sleep with the move, work, and doctor's appointment.

Hopefully, they'll grant it. And, if not, then I'll tell them about everything else I have going on, and if that still doesn't work, then I'll get freaky like another friend did and say, "I spend most of my free-time with my coven." ;)

From the post about Susan getting out of a particular trial:

Quote:

The good news is that she has been excused as of Tuesday. While she did not (and of course would not) lie on the questionnaires, during the interview, she certainly made no effort to conceal certain aspects. Of course she wore a dress that allowed her tattoo to be clearly seen (it runs up her right leg from her foot to currently just below her knee). And she made sure to mention that she practices Wicca and often meets with her Coven (I think it was a question about religion).
Can you get a visible tattoo between now and the reporting date?

Stupid Car Tricks

Killing some time looking at the latest on Yahoo News and came across this item:

2008 Lamborghini Reventón

The whole article is here, but I was most amused by this (emphasis mine):
Quote:

The interior is as special as the exterior. Instead of the stock instrumentation, you'll find functional 3D displays including a g-force meter. By pressing a button, instruments can be changed to a classic analog readout.
I think I need a 650 bhp car that includes a G-Force Meter!!!

Maybe a fake one. I just need to find one that's a large cannabis leaf, and that might do the trick. ;)

alphabassettgrrl 10-09-2007 06:30 PM

MG- I'm glad to hear that Chicken seems to be doing better. I'm sure Pooh did help chase off the hawk! Good doggie! A basset is big enough to discourage even a large bird.

DP- I hope your move comes soon for you, just to have it done and all settled. Good luck on the jury duty thing. Last time I got called I was dismissed quickly- it was a DUI case but no defense attorney wants me in that courtroom. I didn't even have to plan my escape!

You are the master!!! :snap: Ok, how do you do it? ;)

alphabassettgrrl 10-09-2007 06:49 PM

One of the things they ask you is how you feel about DUI. I feel quite strongly about it. One of my high school classmates was injured badly by a drunk driver. One of my coworkers has a brother who was killed by one. I kicked my father-in-law out of the house for doing it.

Implication: I vote for jail time for drunk drivers. So... unless you've got very good evidence that your client was actually not drunk... they've got a problem. I don't care that "nothing happened" during the alleged drunk driving tour. It's something I think one should simply not do. Ever.

That last call to jury duty was for a narcotics DUI case. This was of course after Jentina had lived here, and worked in a pharmacy. Did she talk about drugs? Yes. So I got bounced out pretty quickly. I was glad to get out of that one, because it would have screwed up a weekend of work.

On the whole, I'm happy to serve on a jury, just please let the timing be good. I've never been asked though; the screening filters me out. I could get dragged into other kinds of trials, like murder or carjacking, things they'd ask me to be neutral about.

Got the official rejection from the SD judge today. No one wants to hire a Third Tier Toilet. Good thing I already have a job, because it looks like I'll be doing budget reconciliation for the rest of my life.

Oh, Pru. :( I really hope this means that something better is in the cards.

Normally, what seems like bad times can actually be a paving towards much better things. I'm sure that's the case here, and it won't be too long until you land the perfect job.

BarTopDancer 10-09-2007 09:56 PM

Didn't you really want the job in WV anyways? So the SD judge did you a favor by not forcing you to accept this job when you haven't been requested by the WV judge :)

wendybeth 10-09-2007 11:22 PM

DP's right, Pru. When you wind up where you're supposed to be, then you will look back and be glad that things went the way they did. Have some faith, especially in yourself! Besides, winter in SD seriously sucks.

Ooooh! I like that one. ;)

They granted me a final extension to the week of Nov. 5th, and said that if I do have to report, it won't be for more than a day.

PoohDog snubbed David this afternoon. I wish I had realized it before he left (he was picking up Boy and looking at Chicken). I would have loved to see if his back hair was up.

Normally when you get close to Chicken, Pooh is right there, trying to get his licks in. After the boys left Pooh came up to me to be petted and it dawned on me that he didn't go to David.

Disneyphile 10-10-2007 10:38 PM

Animals know, MG.

When my ex left me, Nala wouldn't even come to him whenever he tried to stop by, and she used to love him. And, he even tried to take her from me. But, whenever he'd come over, she'd come and sit in my lap. ;)

Prudence 10-11-2007 12:01 AM

Thank you to everyone who's said nice things or thought nice things. I'm getting a huge amount of negative feedback from the legal world. It's hard when people you had considered role models and mentors tell you to stop trying and that you're not worth anything more than the dregs. It's also hard to go from the hero of the career center to the loser who wasted their time.

So, I do still have one more clerkship interview scheduled, and yes I'd much rather go to Wheeling than Sioux Falls. (And the timing would allow me time to graduate and get Boris's thyroid dealt with before moving.) So, you'd better all have your fingers crossed that he doesn't fill that position before I get a chance to interview.

Disneyphile 10-11-2007 12:57 AM

I should be in bed, but I'm too excited to sleep.

We sign the lease in the morning, and then I can get the keys at noon!

I already have a few bags of essentials ready - toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning stuff, our bathroom counter decor (gotta take some kind of decor on the first run), and our new kitchen wall shelf. I'm gonna have some fun tomorrow! :D

Mousey Girl 10-11-2007 05:50 AM

I feel like a shlub right now. I have not been sleeping well. We leave for DLR at some point tomorrow morning and I haven't really even started to pack. Tonight I will be working on Nick's jacket, but doing it over at my mom's. I don't really want to go over there, I have too much to do.

Nick seems to think that we need to get up at 4 am and be on the road before 6. I am thinking I will be happy if we are on the road somewhere around 10. With traffic considerartions that would put us at DLH by 2.

Why is it always the one that can sleep in the car who wants to get on the road at 4:00am?

Mousey Girl 10-11-2007 07:46 AM

I'm not sure, but when you figure it out, please let me know.

Ok, I feel like I got something accomplished this morning. I filled a tupper thingy with margarita to drink as soon as we get into our room tomorrow. I semi-cleaned out my car, I found and am charging my camera, I changed out my purse and I now have a nice stack of clothes awaiting the suitcase.

On a hawkish note, The Old People were running errands yesterday, on my side of town and Mom spotted a very large red-tailed hawk in the air. The curator/falconer that I talked to had told me they typically have a 3 mile range. The probability of it being the same bird is very high. She said it was huge. With her eyesight it would have had to have been big for her to see it. I also heard it yesterday afternoon.

1. Given your past experiences keep a VERY close eye on that packed car.

Disneyphile 10-11-2007 01:34 PM

What I'm doing right now:

Sitting at the old place, because I showed up at the new one, and could hear a band saw buzzing, and the lights on. I walked around the corner, and found the construction foreman on our porch, cutting some of the flooring, with crap littered all over. I poked my head inside, and the washer/dryer are still sitting in the box in the dining room, the blinds are still sitting next to the windows, the kitchen light panels are still missing, and the cleaning lady was confined to the kitchen, just trying to keep the sawdust wiped off the counters. The place is a disaster.

The foreman said, "Come back in two hours, and we'll be finished." I took a look around and replied, "I'll be back after six tonight. I can't keep wasting my time like this. And, that doesn't mean slow down, because you're going to need all six hours to finish."

Morrigoon 10-11-2007 01:37 PM

Poor cleaning lady! If I were her I'd walk or call the owners and insist on a time to come back - how can she do a good job with the job not done?

But T, delays or no delays, when it's done, it'll be ALL NEW STUFF :)

The poor gal was hovering near the back of the kitchen, and profusely apologizing to me. I told her not to worry if she misses a spot or two, because I've got my entire cleaning arsenal in the back of my car anyway.

Well, mostly. They decided not to do the granite counter tops, nor replace the stove and dishwasher. The present ones are in good shape, but still...

The flooring looks gorgeous though. It's cherry finish. :)

But, I'm still rather annoyed at the delays. It's a damn good thing we have our current place until the 31st. This has totally blown my organized schedule to hell and back.

I think what's happened is this is owned by just a couple investors, and I think they've got one too many properties for them to handle on their own. They really need to hire additional office help or something, because it's an absolute cluster**** of disorganization.

Man, I'm depressed about my groups and my classmates this semester in general. I've bitched and moaned about it in my LJ and on here, but damn it, I'm just at my wit's end.

I have group projects coming out of my ears, as usual. Some semesters, you have people not willing to put forth as much effort, some semesters you get people who don't put forth any effort. Whatever. In a way, I'm a bit used to it by now. What gets me down is that I haven't got a single good group this semester. The one good group I have isn't even for a class, it's for a competition the school is in against 18 other universities around the country. As prestigious the prize and portfolio materials are in this, people just aren't putting up as much as they could on it. But oh well.

Another class, Promotions, we have an opportunity to plan some IMC for Carl's Jr. The project is worth a good chunk of grade points, plus there is a prize of $300 in free Carl's food to be split amongst the group. Which could keep me fed for the rest of the semester for free. It's also some more portfolio fodder. I have what seemed to be a pretty good group. We had great ideas, and things seemed promising. Except that a.) no one seems to check their emails, b.) no one seems to want to find a meeting time and c.) some other crap I don't want to list.

What stings is that I was originally in another group that didn't have enough people. The prof decided to break us up, putting us in (what I see now as) essentially weak groups. I thought I had a decent one, but it seems they're only full of ideas and enthusiasm when I'm around. When I'm gone, I get few responses.

Then now, as I'm in the computer lab to work on another research assignment, one of our competing groups for Carl's was in the same computer "pod" as I am. I listened to them write up their proposal (which we should be doing), I listened to them come up with storyboards (which we should be doing), but worst of all, I envied them. I want to be in a group where people get together to get good grades. I want to be in a group that puts forth at least a modicum of effort toward the greater good of... I don't know... greater goods. And damn it, they even got homeboy who's late to every class to show up on time. (I have him in two other classes). I mean, they get him, and I can't get my peeps to respond to an email. WTF is up with that?

Though I'm done with my other assignment, hearing them talk about plans (I was trying not to eavesdrop too hard - I don't want to accidentally duplicate any of their ideas) made me really sad. Why don't I get groups like that?!

What the hell was I thinking?

I just spent 10 days in WDW. I returned home for a mere 36 hours last night...

Tomorrow I'm strapping all 3 kids in the car for a fun filled 6.5 hour drive to CA by myself. I'm then dumping the kids at my Mom's to get a "relaxing" weekend away with the DH for MouseAdventure....

I return to my Mom's in time to strap the kids back in the car for an even more fun filled 6.5 hour drive back to AZ by myself.

In the course of 17 days I will have traveled over 5000 miles and visited 6 Disney parks with 3 kids under the age of 10, run a 10K, and participated in MouseAdventure.

There may not be enough alcohol at the DLR to help me through the weekend.

Slightly freaking out in AZ  ,

swanie

When it rains, it pours... :)

Just got home from finding out that they're still an hour away from completion. Not a problem. And, I made a new discovery - the fireplace is WOOD, not gas!! That means my first in-home Yule log this year!!!!! WHEEEEEEEE!!!

And, as soon as I returned back home, I got a call from someone who read that fancy profile I put together last week, and wants to PAY me to shoot a product video in November. :D

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

Morrigoon 10-11-2007 05:26 PM

I think I've got it worked out to a tee now... using Southwest Airines Vacations, if you depart on January 8th, stay 6 nights, and return on the right flight on the 14th, you can do Florida (including tickets) for either $1600 or just under $2100 for two people (depending on if you want to stay at All-Star or Port Orleans). Basically they're running some deal with Disney where if you stay over 3 nights and buy Magic Your Way parkhoppers, you save $100 on the hotel, and I've got it worked out where returning home on the right flight saves another $100pp on the airfare.

Doesn't matter though... still don't have the dough for it :( (and if I did I'd be putting it toward the cruise, dammit!)

Hey Mrs.Nesbitt... any chance you can work it out cheaper? (Florida, I mean. Alex is dying to go again)

Morrigoon 10-11-2007 06:08 PM

Holy Jeebus... I just priced the same trip for JUST the airfare, also for 2 people. What do you think it cost?

$1000

So... um.... lemme get this straight... I'm could get a hotel for 6 nights, and park tickets for 6 days, and um.... that's only $600 more that air alone?

Very cool on the java-logs, never heard of them. Of course, our fireplace is not really working, needs to be inspected and repaired. But we can smell the brimstone when the neighbors downstairs use theirs. Cough Cough!

The apartment just below us first floor (we're second). There is a crack somewhere, obviously in the fireplace. As an aside, they are also the worst PITA tennants in the building. My CPU sits on the floor on a rug, they complain about the hum keeping them awake (they're in bed by 9 every night).

I need to prepare myself, we're having rain now, it's getting chilly and they will be burning the fireplace a lot.

Morrigoon 10-12-2007 09:24 AM

Bit of randomness. Story had nothing to do with what it might appear to be about, but I thought it was funny.

In other news, Big Lots has an electric fireplace for like $300 in their ad right now. Also, if anyone has been looking to acquire a chocolate fountain... $20.

Snowflake,

Alert the landlord about the fireplace problem NOW. Smoke and other combustion gasses leaking in to your apartment from another tenant’s fireplace is an extremely dangerous situation! If they won’t act, call the fire department!

Okay, I will!

Morrigoon 10-12-2007 10:03 AM

Oh, that's true! Noxious gases and all that. I would also get one of those alarms - they're like fire alarms but alert you to an abundance of noxious fumes.

That's actually a safety issue. You could get carbon monoxide poisoning. I would bring it to the attention of the landlord immediately and get a CO detector.

I think the smoke detector that is wired in is also CO detector, but I will confirm.

Happily, I always sleep with windows open, even when it's cold. But, better safe than dead and I do have my kitty to be concerned about!

No. :( We went over last night, and there was still a lot of patching and touch-up, and some floor trim not tacked down. Plus, we found a few other issues. So, we stashed our small load of stuff in the back closet, and then I made a list of all the issues, room-by-room. I went over there this morning, found the foreman, and did a walk-through with him. Turns out that he was happy I came over, because they wanted to finish up this morning, but don't have a key (only the investors and tenants have keys - maintenance is not allowed in without the tenant present... I like that policy). So, he knew about most stuff on the incredibly organized list, but didn't know about the others, so now it will get done. :) I called the investment office, asking to be pro-rated for another day, but they decided to give us through the 15th instead, as a courtesy, since we've been very nice and patient about everything. They appreciate our friendliness, because they said that most people aren't like that.

It's a very exciting weekend at the Spumoni Gardens!

Tonight's show has been sold out since Wednesday. In the audience tonight are a couple of friends from high school, one of whom I haven't seen in thirty years, the other I just got together with last month for the first time since graduation. This all started with the reunion this year that I didn't go to. I did use the email list to say hi to everyone, and got some very nice replies - some from very unexpected sources. So Debi is in town this weekend with her sister, and is getting together with Cecily and coming to the show. It should be a lot of fun.

Saturday night's show had to be moved, because the restaurant we partner with sold the room. It was sold months ago, before we were sure we would still be running.

The show's originator is, in his other life, the telecommunications manager for the Rose Quarter. Among other things, this got us the Trailblazers as a sponser, allowing us to give NBA tickets away as a door prize. He's always wanted to do the show there, so tomorrow night we're moving to the one of the show rooms in the Memorial Coliseum. It's an exciting experiment, and if it works we may do more special events there.

This is going to be fun!!

Anyone wanna go to a USC football game tomorrow? I have an extra ticket because Alex is sacking out.

CoasterMatt 10-13-2007 02:34 AM

I'd love to go, but no wheels

blueerica 10-13-2007 08:57 AM

I'd go, but I'm only slightly more a fan of USC than Ohio State.

(I'm from Michigan)

While I do love me some college ball and might be willing to trade some allegiance to go to a game - I actually have a few concrete plans this afternoon.

Someone should go if they've got the free time - college football doesn't get enough credit for being as fun, exciting and earnest as it truly is. Though I may not be a woman of Troy, being a part of that kind of crowd is almost magical...

Morrigoon 10-13-2007 12:57 PM

So we were literally in the car on the way out, and he sacked out again because it was raining. Nevermind that it's not raining now, but it was raining in Long Beach as we drove through, ergo, *cough cough* he didn't want to go.

So now I'm watching the game on TV while two tickets sit useless in my purse.

alphabassettgrrl 10-13-2007 09:24 PM

Goonie, I'm sorry nobody could go with you. I know the games are more fun in person. TV is a really poor substitute.

Disneyphile 10-14-2007 01:01 AM

Goon, I would have gone with you if we weren't moving. Sorry. :(

We're about to fall over. We got some stuff done today, but we're way behind, since my parents are in town for the weekend. Can't really gripe since they've taken us shopping for stuff for the new place, but we're already about a week behind schedule, so this week, we'll have to hustle to clear the way for the movers on Saturday. Oy!

Oh, and do any of you remember that large circle tree candle sconce that was hanging on the gazebo at our wedding ceremony? It's now found its home above the fireplace. And, now.... we have a full set of tools, screen, and log holder that match. :D Once that mantel is finished, it's gonna be gorgeous!

My mother joked that she was going to bring us a log and say, "Here's your housewarming present." Ba dum bum. (She's a funny lady, I swear.)

And, we made the discovery that the stove is nearly brand new, once I had cleaned it (it was beyond disgusting - I swear, how do people live like that?!?!), and popped on new drip pans. Once they swap the broken "nice" dishwasher, and I finish lining the ugly cabinet interiors, it's going to look awesome. (Even though, it's looking much nicer than our current kitchen already.)

Besides my parents, we've already had a few guests, including LibraryVixen, and my friend who coordinated the wedding. However, Goonie was the first to see it, and even brought a nice sprig of rosemary as a house blessing. We've placed it in the fireplace, and it will be used as the kindling for the first fire, thus carrying that blessing to the heavens. :)

blueerica 10-14-2007 01:08 AM

Gah! Goonie!

I want to make a public apology...

I realized as I was on my way home tonight that I completely neglected to call you back after dinner. :( It would have been awesome to have met up with you.

As it stood, dinner took us longer than we thought and going into the park so late in the game didn't seem like a good use of my pass, so we just chilled out.

I just wanted to make sure I said I was sorry - and to let this be an example as to why these sorts of things aren't generally left up to me. I suck. Big time.

Apologies,

Erica

Morrigoon 10-14-2007 08:48 AM

Hey, thanks!

Yeah, no worries, because by the time I went to Cafe Orleans to make ressies for Sadako, Purpledove and myself, the earliest we could get was 7:40, so my guess is, however long you were at dinner, we still didn't eat till after that. And since I was hanging with those lovely ladies, I didn't bother to follow up with you guys like I should have. So see? My bad too :)

It took us 4 freakin' hours to get home!!! Actually the route I took wasn't much further than the normal shot, straight up the 5. I am curious to see what would have happened had we done the route the CHP was suggesting and not get off the 5 until the 14. *shudder*

I didn't know about the Long Beach marathon until this morning, either.

blueerica 10-14-2007 08:39 PM

It sounds like EVERYONE was having issues with the marathon. I went to school for a meeting on a competition I'm taking part in, and one of the girls was explaining that she couldn't even get to her house last night because they'd blocked off every road to get to it. Others mentioned that doing errands was an impossibility today.

It's times like this that I'm glad I'm in Huntington.

Closed streets- take a bicycle. They'll generally let those through.

alphabassettgrrl 10-15-2007 12:48 AM

So this morning (on three hours of sleep) I rode 7 miles of mountain biking. It was the "Fat Tire Festival" fundraiser for a local bike group, and one of the things was a "poker ride". You go along the course, stop at five of the possible eight stations, pick a card, and they stamp your collection card with what it is. Best hand wins a bike. Hubby packed all the bike stuff in the car, loaded the bikes, and let me sleep just a few more minutes. He set up the car so I could sleep on the drive there, too.

I did the 4.5 mile course, with a little extra detour up to follow Shawn through the creek of doom. With the zillions of people, my lack of sleep, and the slippery conditions through what they alternately call the Rock Garden, I decided today would not be a good day to try it. So I waited for him at the start of the bad part. He had gone up the creek to get to a different poker station, and get a longer more technical ride. He wasn't sleep deprived and he does better on the CoD.

He got lost and missed the turn to the poker station, and would up going most of the way up a 3 mile climb to a different (unintended) poker station. He was kind of thinking in retrospect that he should have just finished the hill, hit that station, and called it good. Instead, he went down the massive hill, hit the station he meant to hit, and came back to where we were planning to meet. He called my cell, but with the poor reception we couldnt' hear each other. There was enough to text, though, which helped. I thought he was taking a long time, and then he texted me that he had gotten lost. Turns out someone was likely standing in front of the sign at the turn-off, so he missed it.

Found him, we rode to our last poker station, and got all our cards. Didn't win anything; really bad poker hands. But we got back in time for lunch, and beer was included. Very nice. I had a Mothership Wit (wheat beer) and a Fat Tire Ale. Good stuff. Then I test-rode a couple of suspension bikes. I don't like full-suspension bikes and I don't like the rep lecturing me how I need to have the seat at the height of my head in order to ride properly. When I want to be able to touch the ground while sitting on the seat, if they look at me like I just grew a second head, I don't want to talk to them anymore. But I did find two bikes I like. One is front-suspension only, a Trek 69er. The front wheel is 29 inches and the back is 26 inches. Handled well. The other one I liked is the Safire from Specialized.

Expensive, so I don't know that I'll get either of them. But I verified that I really really don't want a full suspension bike and I feel like I wasted the time it took to sit on it. I knew I didn't want one. But hubby is never convinced until I waste the time to "just try it".

Lots of things I've never done but feel pretty confident I wouldn't like. I knew I wasn't going to like the full suspension. I know what I like. And what I don't. The full suspension makes me feel very insecure and it's not gonna happen. Plus I have to have the seat too freaking high and it makes me nervous and if I'm nervous about my bike I will not ride it.

Rant over. It's late. I'm tired. I worked tonight so I'm tired and wired. Shawn took pretty good care of me today, aside from pushing too hard for me to try a bike I know I won't like.

On the bright side, when we got home from the bike thing hubby took care of the dogs, fed them, changed the dog's diaper, and generally let me take a good nap. I may whine sometimes but on the whole he's a good guy.

In the name of business continuity we received the following email:

Quote:

The Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity Plan for [company] needs the following information from all employees who use our parking lot in [city] office in the event of a major disaster where we need to identify all vehicles in the lot:

Employee Name:
Car Make(s) and Model No(s) – if you park more than one car here:
Year:
Color:
License Plate No:

Note: This information will not be published to all employees, but be placed in the Business Continuity Management Team Members’ handbook.
This seems a bit big brotherish to me.

The last time I fell for that gag they turned it against the employees of Bella Terra and started giving us BS citations for rules we didn't know existed. They no longer require employees to give out their information for that purpose.

And BTD - do they have no other way of knowing who was in the building, you know, timesheets/clock-ins, security video, schedules, etc? It seems very strange that they'd need to know about such information in the case of disaster.

BarTopDancer 10-15-2007 01:43 PM

Yup. We all have keycards that we use to get in the building. Log on times are recorded. We have people who carpool.

I suspect something else is going on where people who shouldn't be parking in our lot, are. And how will they know the vendors who park in our lot?

Has anyone else (besides BE) had this request made of them?

alphabassettgrrl 10-15-2007 02:50 PM

I've been asked to list my car license plate when checking into a hotel, or parking at the college but never at a job.

JWBear 10-15-2007 03:13 PM

My agency requires that info from employees at most of our offices, and has for years.

Capt Jack 10-15-2007 03:18 PM

when parking on the lot for my work, they do ask that you get a parking sticker, which involves their recording of your license plate info.

ditto for my last few jobs. and yeah, they used it as a way to tow unauthorized vehicles. it actually freed up a ton of spaces after a few months.

I thought all beer was good???

Unless, of course it's warm, flat, or skunky. Oh, and that one time I found a cigarette butt in the bottom of my bottle......

Yay BTD!!! Go Ducks.

My hubby's used to hearing me say stuff like that. ;) A girl should always save room for chocolate and ice cream! :D

By the way, I've decided that moving sucks, no matter how organized and planned. I really should be unloading the car right now. But, I'm sitting here, eating lunch very slowly, so I have the excuse not to. ;)

It appears to be a page with rotating images. I have yet to see any 9 YO cross dressers, but have seen lots of very adult ladies (and a bad male pirate).

I suspect something else is going on where people who shouldn't be parking in our lot, are. And how will they know the vendors who park in our lot?

Has anyone else (besides BE) had this request made of them?

Our condo complex has asked us before, but I always fail to respond.

I've never been disinclined to provide that information to apartments or condos that I am renting. I always figured it was part of the application process. But something about it at work (we have no parking passes, nor do we have a shortage of spaces) seems fishy.

I am SO unmotivated today. I have a few shelves to finish covering, and my studio to organize. And, I've done almost squat today.

I'm just worried about everything that's left to do, and when I worry, my motivation goes out the window, and I just shut down.

Me too! That is why I end up waiting until the last minute to pack, and struggle with unpacking (until the clutter gets to me).

I found with this move, it was easier if I told myself 1 box then a break. 2 boxes then a break. I also unpacked room by room. Living room with the AV stuff first. Then bathroom. Kitchen was last because no matter how much it sucked eating out, I could.

Kevy Baby 10-16-2007 04:45 PM

If it weren't for the last minute rush, I wouldn't get anything done.

I love deadlines: especially that wooshing sound as they fly by.

Gemini Cricket 10-16-2007 05:02 PM

I just got a flu shot. It stung. Lying, stinking nurse...

:D

Morrigoon 10-16-2007 05:41 PM

Today sucked.

I screwed up royally on a report I turned in yesterday, ended up missing half the numbers. Very embarrassing. Had to go back and figure out exactly what was missing, and chase down numbers from people who NEVER SENT THEM TO ME IN THE FIRST PLACE. Plus someone was out today, so I was getting twice as many of the "can you follow with this person for me" emails. Plus Tuesday is my half day (due to agent training classes I attend in the morning) so I was doing all this stuff in the remaining half of the day. Which means, of course, that I did not get a single thing I PLANNED to do today done, nor did I get in any recruiting calls.

CoasterMatt 10-16-2007 07:12 PM

I had another good sales day... maybe I can get that new camera a bit sooner :)

It's raining here. I was checking forecasts trying to see just how long it is supposed to last. Weather Channel says it is sunny and 70, Yahoo weather says cloudy and 60 with no rain in the forecast (but it does say current conditions are rainy). So, who knows.

BarTopDancer 10-17-2007 09:16 AM

Boo!

And in unrelated news, Garth Brooks performed 11 shows in Kansas City. Sold out in 10 minutes flat.

Shows are in November. There are only nine. Sales took 1 hour and 58 minutes (but would have been quicker had they put all nine on the market at once instead of just one at a time in a false motion of putting one on the market and acting surprised that it was so popular then adding another and another "due to popular demand").

With the 10 minutes thing, I believe you are thinking of the Hanna Montana concerts (which are facing a lot of ire over alleged preferential treatment to scalpers).

Gn2Dlnd 10-17-2007 10:14 AM

Someone scalped Hannah Montana?

"Brad! I need this and this and this and I need it asap! Help!"
And when I start getting everything ready and everyone riled up to deal with the emergency...
"Oh, Brad. About that emergency... yeah.... cancel that. We figured it out. Sorry for the hassle..."

Grrrrrr diddy Grrr Grr Grrr!

Prudence 10-17-2007 02:28 PM

I'm finally home! Everything hurts. And despite getting in late late late last night, I had to get up early for an interview this morning. And now I'm back home, recuperating. I think I'm ditching class tonight. (Partly because I haven't done the reading, but mostly because I'm in my comfiest, rattiest sweats and I don't feel like changing.)

I had a terrible morning - two buses in a row brokedown - leading to me being nearly an hour late to work.

Then things got great, though - I had a wonderful sales day, and ended up with a good bonus plus a $25 Target card.

Kevy Baby 10-17-2007 06:54 PM

When we were in New York, on one of the elevators we rode, three girls got on the elevator. They were a blond, a brunette and a redhead. It was surreal - I thought I was living in a joke.

I have a new appreciation for low-budget television production. Watching PBS, and there was this program on science (WIRED Science) that reminded me of the TV magazine-style program we used to do in my TV Production classes (Contra Costa Today, if anybody cares).

And I realized... it's pretty good! Better than a lot of the so-called "professional" dreck you see on the major networks. I'm becoming increasingly convinced that big budgets and technology diminish the motivation to create good content (as evidenced by the decline of video game playability). Watching the, not amateur, but shall we say lower-status professional, work is giving me an increased appreciation for the skill of the people involved.

blueerica 10-17-2007 09:23 PM

What a crazy couple of days...

After doing some returns, running some errands and picking up prescriptions, it seems as though I decided to make this a burn out day. Hopefully this means I can get some good work accomplished tomorrow...

While I seem to be having better luck with my group project, I still am picking up much of the work. I'm working on some story boards and I realize now that I'm the only one in the group with art skills. Ugh. I already wrote up the promotional plan, so that work is done, anyway.

Oh well...

Maybe I'll get really lucky tonight and get some good sleep in. I'm glad that I just basically spaced out today. I think I needed it in a bad way.

We were sitting down to dinner last night when out of the blue Headliner says "What were those mickey shaped sugar coated things we had with Mr. Hyperman?"

Humm, think, think, think, Ahh. "You mean the Mickey beignets at Cafe Orleans?"

"Yeah! They were sooooo good!"

Cute! :D

Now, I need to run back to the old place and shower. I forgot to bring clean clothes back last night (since they're all moved here). And, all the shower stuff is back at the old place. That's what we get for not wanting to "dirty the new showers" until we're actually living here (which thankfully happens in 2 more days).

Could use more prayers for my mom - her infection still isn't healing after a month of antibiotics, and now her platelets have dropped to ~8. It's about the lowest they've ever been and she's been hospitalized at 15. But she won't go to the hospital, she says.
